We all know that time is money, but that's probably only a small part of what led to this situation occurring. It was the perfect storm of a mismatch between client demands and expectations, and what the operator was able to supply - both of which have many components to them. Fortunately, we have the solution for all parties involved!

Just started my detailing-business , though i do have the experience etc and have done coatings for years now...but never came across a bad job like this before, wow! If there are things you can't do as a detailer, just outsource it and stay honest to your customers! For many years I outsourced lens-corrections for example, even though I'd done it a few times on my own cars, I just didn't trust myself to do it for the customer! One needs patience and a clear understanding of the learningcurves in this job, it takes time, endurance and self-awareness!

These uploads you guys do don't get the views they deserve. Extremely interesting video. You mention at 19:00 that there is healthy clear coat from the readings you measured, could/would the poorly applied coating added thickness (microns) to the original paint?
@LakeCountryManufacturing
@LakeCountryManufacturing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback Matt - if you could share the video among your detailing friends that would help us out a lot! The gauge we use is calibrated to read in increments of 2 microns for day-to-day use (it can read finer decimals, but there's no practical use for that). Generally speaking the smears around this car would have had no effect on the paint thickness measurements. Multiple layers of properly applied coatings (such as the car was finished off with) won't add even a single micron.

I'm in the process of trying to get a refund and having the work done to put right elsewhere. I've been to a very reputable car detailer who have composed an email with there findings. Feels like I have a battle as the original ceramic coater isn't happy and has got very personal in his replays even though I've sent him a copy of the email report.. It's been stressful

Excellent video what is a healthy reading for clear coat as you mentioned ? How can you judge that and know it hasn’t been painted twice to give you the impression there is more top coat than there actually is please ? I have taken readings on both my cars a E91 averaging 170 and a shogun averaging 90 i have corrected the shogun a few times as it’s old but now I’ve coated it and accepted I probably don’t have much clear coat left I’d really appreciate your advise on this
@LakeCountryManufacturing
@LakeCountryManufacturing 2 жыл бұрын
Modern clear coat is meant to be around 50 microns. Most paint depth gauges won't tell you how many layers of material (primer/colour/lacquer) you have, or their individual thicknesses. The ones that do are tricky to use and require knowledge of the paint process to properly evaluate the readings. 170 could be factory with 45 microns of clear coat. 90 could be factory with 55 microns of clearcoat, and there is no visual way to tell the difference. Much depends on the manufacturer and the colour (for example pale colours will often have more thickness in the colour for coverage). Furthermore, if a car has been painted twice, usually the second paint job goes OVER the keyed up surface of the original paint job, so if there was 100 microns to begin with, you might find a reading of 175 microns after the second, and that STILL doesn't guarantee you have 50 microns of clear on top (although you probably should, if it's been painted according to the manufacturer guidance / data sheet). Learning how to identify aftermarket paint comes with time and experience, to the point where we (this is Jay here over at the LC UK HQ) don't need the gauge for anything other than proving what we can already see. Pro tip: invest in a laser pointer, suction cup, and some kind of inexpensive clamp to join the two. Using the exact same point on the panel (and I mean measure from the exact same edge of the laser point), take a starting reading and then check again after one cutting pass (after the paint has cooled). Change one thing (such as your pad, compound, speed, how hard you push, how long you polish for) and repeat the process. Use your findings to help understand what you're doing in future! You can see Kelly demonstrate this in the Bentley video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2jSXqWcnp17iLc

@LakeCountryManufacturing
@LakeCountryManufacturing Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. This whole car was re-polished and re-coated. If you ever machine polish a car with correctly applied ceramic coatings on it, you will be removing the coatings as you go. The only thing different in this case is that those thick patches (some people call them high spots) took longer to polish away. We have a video in the works which talks more about ceramic coatings and what they do/don't stand up to. Stay tuned :)

@@LakeCountryManufacturing sorry one more question or clarification. So recently applied ceramic to my vehicle and had a couple high spots so I used turtle wax finishing polish on them, seeing it a milder abrasive would I still need to go over those spots. In this video I can’t remember if you used a medium or mild polish to correct the entire vehicle.
@LakeCountryManufacturing
@LakeCountryManufacturing Жыл бұрын
How tough those high spots/patches are to remove will vary not just by the brand of coating, but also by how long it has been left to cure. This is a very loose guide - and there is no substitute for proper preparation, planning and methodical working - but when we apply coatings, if we spot a patch that wasn't properly buffed off during application: Within seconds, it can probably be wiped off Within minutes, you might get away with some strong panel wipe ...10 minutes or more, we're possibly into light machine polishing territory (soft foam, polish) ... when we're talking in hours, that might be heavier machine polishing (microfiber, medium cut) ... several hours / days, worst case scenarios could even require sanding Again - I'm pleased to confirm this is all coming up soon in a video that I am editing right now :) Check out this series (especially parts 7, 8 and 9) for more insight: kzbin.info/aero/PLtsZj-Jd7oYVSws-NwuvIVF8SE8Z2N6vU

Jay B here... our best guess is it was a combination of poor lighting, and not enough time. Here's a fun video we (Kelly and I) made about 'deceptive' lighting a few years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYLSe4SNZZKdg6c

It looks like the vehicle still has polish residue which made the coating fail . This is why proper lighting is very important for coating installation.

i think i know what happened. The previous detail guy bought coating in bulk. and he probably doesn't have many clients anyway, so he used the expired old coating that again wasn't stored properly as well. Also the weather was very dry plus body panels were probably hot. Doesn't have an ac unit. All this can result in this. The thing is, he did this one bad job, and probably lost 100s of customers by owners word of mouth. on that note, we need to know who this was. Secondly LCM did an amazing job and earned 1000000ssss of clients for life. and me for his trainings lol. His knowledge is top notch and is just not present anywhere.

Sadly your guess isn't quite right - it was an accredited detailer with fresh products, but they were working in a hurry and in less-than-ideal lighting, temperature and humidity conditions. Credit where it's due, they also paid out of their own pocket for everything to be fixed - so we won't be naming names. Thank you for the kind words all the same!

Kelly uses a variety of compounds in our videos; for the most part, when cutting (including to remove these coating patches) it would have been a medium-heavy cut compound. Nothing too extreme. You can learn more about removing / killing ceramic coatings here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eai3fpWhqNyHmJY

It sounds like you've had a great experience which is good to hear, but it's worth remembering that not all coatings are alike, even when they come from the same manufacturer. Nobody can defend how this one arrived, but if you've got a very temperamental coating (one that responds very differently under varying temperature and humidity conditions for example) then it can be easier than with others to get into difficulty.

This vehicle should have been done right the first time as it is a very easy vehicle to work with in terms of nice curved panels and lots of times with Porches, the paint tends to be more of the soft side. I really do not know how the high spots and all could have been missed and such a horrible application. I am under the impression that they leveled with only one microfiber cloth around the entire vehicle and just completely avoided a second wipe with a suede microfiber cloth. I believe the first job was very sorry and goes to show that even when you are an accredited detailer. It does not always mean you are going to get the best job. Any detailer that has a passion would not do this to a client that is spending $2000.

After detailing professionally since 1986, it just makes me crazy when I see another wonder - detailing product hit the market. You pay some so- called detailer $ 2,000 to a apply a protection product, and then have another to fix a bad application. Anything you apply to your vehicle paint that has to be removed by using abrasives is plain dumb. Stop putting wax over a ceramic coating, you're just creating more work to remove it. Using " SHAMPOO" to wash that's weak - soap so not to damage the thing you applied that's suppose to protect is beyond rational.
