Graphene coatings are now being sold in the detailing world as an innovation over Ceramic Coatings. They claim to have better protection and water spot resistance than Ceramic Coatings, but is it all hype? Join me as I test Ethos Graphene coating against Gtehcniq Crystal Serum Light and learn as much as I can about this new coating.
Correction 6:24 Ethos recommends waiting 1 hour before applying second layer

Jason, after watching all six different videos by the KZbin superstars on the 303 graphenes, and so many others about the newest product in ceramics, the graphene, I think Ethos represents all of them in your example. My take is that your video has far surpassed all the others in its depth, scope, and conclusions. From what I can gather over the last couple of months and more specifically the last two weeks, Graphene is more of a new "Buzz" word than an actual new product that covers your car in graphene for protection. It is more of a different recipe within the ceramic world. AMMO NYC explains it better than anyone I have read or watched. Your test validates exactly what he explained on his charts, graphs, and chemical analysis. After everything has been said and done, my conclusion is that the "new" ceramic we are now calling "Graphene" are a little easier to apply than some of the other ceramics, but when it comes to all the other attributes, gloss, protection, water beading, water spot issues, and durability, well, they seem very similar indeed. The greatest video I have seen in a long time and I would love to see you and AMMO NYC join in producing a video. Thank you so much.

Now coat half of a car in Graphene, and the other half in CSL. Live with it for 6-12 months, and report back monthly. This is the only real way to test a coating in my opinion. From my hands on experience with CSL that slickness you love will diminish quickly, as well as the crazy hydrophobicity unless topped with EXO. This is a great starting point, but I think it needs to be expanded and tested further for a true conclusion.

Jason, a message from a real coatings chemist with a PhD: Hydrofluoric Acid of any strength is potentially lethal if splashed on your skin. I would not do what you did unless I was wearing a specialist chemical protection suit. Bare arms and exam gloves are a trip to your local chemical burns unit. Always have calcium gluconate cream to hand if you must use HF.

For real… That’s what street bombers use to etch tags on windows cause it just eats away at the glass leaving a permanent cloudy surface behind. But it’s well known that it’s VERY dangerous to deal with…if you accidentally spill some on your hand or arm it’s gonna melt away the flesh instantly. It’s literally the acid you think of when you see monster movies where they dissolve bodies in barrels of acid lol
@rhengst22

Hydroflouric acid does NOT burn skin silly. It is odorless and looks like water and goes through the skin and starts eating the calcium in your bones. You are thinking of hydrochloric acid maybe.

To clarify, because I don't think Beasley property answered your question about graphene in relation to the strength. The notion that graphene is 200x stronger than steel is ONLY true when you talk about a ONE ATOM thick layer, which is how graphene lays out, compared to one atom thick of steel. Steel, like "bullet proof glass," is not actually bullet proof until they reach a certain thickness. Furthermore, the "strength" of graphene is based on a linear force test, since graphene itself is 1 layer thick, and means that pulling it apart from both ends (effectively) makes it the strongest. But the question then becomes, how then does that play a role in a coating when the formula obviously contains 98%+ NON-graphene material. Still waiting on that answer.
@ChicagoAutoPros
@ChicagoAutoPros 3 жыл бұрын
The answer is that he has not seen any benefit of adding Graphene into a coating because it’s not creating the lattice structure needed to create the “barrier” layer.
@MarkusKleis
@MarkusKleis 3 жыл бұрын
Maze to confusion But we don’t know from what. I have been asking this question since graphene was first toted. Nobody has given even a basic explanation for HOW the graphene itself causes that. It *could* be helping, but we don’t know if it is something else in the formula.

Graphene is being explored in the bike industry for thinner thus lighter frames. But, they have difficulty of forming the material in whatever process they have available. I can imagine graphene can only be added for coating a surface in the smallest amount that it has no advantage over a ceramic.

Thanks for doing this, I just recently have been looking into getting something like this done to my vehicles since we plan to keep both of them for a long time to come. I was also considering on ttempting to apply this myself but my detailing skills are no where on point and I lack the patience and time to do it properly. So from a consumer perspective your video gave me plenty of information to decide to get a professional to do the application in order to ensure the prep-work is handled properly. Also what would make me consider spending more on a product that currently does not show that extra cost is worth it. And even though I'm not a detailer by any means but if I was, what would this extra cost of materials which will funnel down to my customers really provide? I take it down to a simple process that was explained to me when I was shopping for my wife's engagement ring and I was getting caught up in all the meticulous details of diamonds. What do people look at first? Answer: The size. In the cast of these coatings, what are people looking at first? Answer: How long they last for my cost. All the other items fall into place when that initial aspect is taken care of first. Thanks again for the video.

You can't accurately measure the surface temperature of the hood with a infrared thermometer without knowing the emissivity of the coating. The one used in the video isn't adjustable either. Best to use a thermocouple fastened to the bottom of the hood below each coating. It's unlikely that there'd be a measurable difference however given that they're both on the same metallic substrate. The middle of the hood itself would transmit heat between the hotter side and the cooler side. I better test would be to use to separate hoods (1 per treatment).

Thanks Jason for taking the time to conduct this unbiased review. I'll tell you what, the best thing about the video is the new Rupes line ;). I love CSL and can't wait to give Ethos's Grapehne matrix a spin. One thing not mentioned often is that Ceramic coatings aren't going to get much better and that Graphene coatings (however they are made) are arguably nearly as good as the Ceramic that have been tested/proven with R & D over the years. Graphene is still in its infancy and overtime, I believe that it'll be better than Ceramic coatings, but it's not there yet.

As a car guy I want to thank you for the videos that you make. My detail game, which didn't exist until I started watching your channel and Pan the Organizer, will never be the same. As a chemist, I have a couple issues with your episode. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned these yet (forgive me, but I didn't read all 250 comments); however, to measure the temperature resistance of the coating you would need to measure the temperature from the bottom of the hood. Preliminarily, I would suggest that the higher temperature of the graphene side is actually encouraging. It's tells you that there is more energy being repelled on the graphene side than on the ceramic side. This should occur whether the uninterrupted layer is intact or not because the conductive properties are inherit to the particle (as far as I've read anyway) if connected to another particle or not. In other words, it should offer the heat displacement as long as the suspended particles are present, random or latticed. Secondly, when you were using chemicals at the end you used Hydrochloric Acid, not Hydrofluoric Acid... Or you would be dead... For reference look up the SDS on Hydrofluoric Acid. It's really nasty stuff. I helped stabilize a coworker who had concentrated HF splashed on her neck. I'll spare you the details, but even now I can remember the scene as if it just happened. So, HCl, not HF. Otherwise, keep up the good work!

Mostly for cleaning mineral crust around door jamb and emblems. The minerals in my country is nasty. There's no single deposit remover made for car detailing able to cut through it. And I already tried most of it, from Optimum HDR to Modesta M5 Flame. Anyone who use it should be a higly trained professional, and remember not even nitrile gloves able to withstand it.

@@arapaimagold8088 let me think about it a little and reply once I come up with an idea. Using HF for car detailing seems... Well... Just not worth it. That being said, there has to be a solution (pun intended 😁) to this problem. One that doesn't require you to handle an acid that eats the calcium from your bones when soaked in through your skin. Okay, so what minerals and metals are giving you problems. The more exact you are the better. Also, how do you keep it from eating the aluminum and/or whatever other metal it's being sprayed on? How are you neutralizing it?

I’m a student taking biomedicine and I love this. I would love to chat with tim about the chemistry of this. If Jim sees this, can he answer some of my questions on the chemistry of this? So with a polysilizane for traditional theromosetting, the aging process after it starts to adhere is due to ammonia reacting, creating R3si-NH2 (R being something that IDK because I’m not too sure on what can form the best adhesion). Is that what is used in ceramics as well? Because I would assume it would require ammonia in it which isn’t that present the smell of some ceramics. Is inorganic silizane ( H2Si-NH) a useful compound? I hypothesize this is not a strong enough compound because upon contact with water, the water will try to stick to the h2SI due to cohesion (the oxygen atom being attracted to the negatively charged SI, but also the H). I’d really like to speak to Jim and get to know different properties of chemical compounds with different structures, differing functional groups and the effects in a compound in the real world. For now I’m just learning the basics, but I sure would love to learn about it. I think it’s really cool

That was an interesting comparison. My takeaway is that both seem to be good options. I'd need a couple years of actual use and exposure to the harsh conditions we endure here in northern Illinois to decide which is better. Maybe time will tell. When ceramic coatings first came out, the claims were overblown in my opinion. Ceramics are great, and I've had good luck with the one I chose, but you can't just apply a ceramic and expect it to hold up. Booster products help maintain water beading or sheeting properties. After two years of road salt, semi frequent washing, various bird bombs, and brake dust, it's time for a paint correction and re-coating. While Jason may have been bummed that both coatings polished off quite easily in the bonus footage, I'd consider that a plus. I'd hate to have to be too aggressive with compounds just to remove a previous coating. Gentlest test spot that produces the desired result wins.

I work for Artdeshine who manufacture SPS Graphene and Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating. Many levels of this are true, but there are many generalisations as well and it isn't fair to speak of the entire industry when we are looking a a few manufacturers. 100% graphene is a buzz word and is being used by companies to generate hype around their new products and some of these products offer minimal benefits over traditional SIO2 coatings, but it's not fair to the rest of the industry who actually have good products with graphene that DO provide real benefits to customers. If people want to talk chemistry that's great and offers a level of insight, but EVERYONE remember the best test you'll ever see is side by side testing of coatings, and from that we've deduced that our coating outperforms major brand ceramic coatings. So take everything you see with a grain of salt, just because on chemist or a few groups don't know how to work with graphene doesn't mean the entire sector are in the same ball game.

Fantastic video. Thanks. I'm a DiY detailer just taking care of my dozen or so vehicles but since 2000 my company in Poland has been engaged in nano science primarily conductive materials for microelectronics (silver, copper, gold, Ti, etc.) and you caught my eye with the graphene (which was super over hyped in conductive materials ... conducts really well in 1 axis and absolutely dead in the other so molecular alignment was essential and expensive since the material doesn't auto assimilate bonds). You've got to understand that nanometer is just "scale" which is equal to 1000 microns ... the material Si, Ti, graphene, ceramics, etc can be any size from gobs measure in millimeters to microscopic/atomic sized particles measured in nanometers.

Thanks for a great video, I particularly liked Jim from Dr Beazley, he was honest, coherent and owned up to his own limitations; yes he could have been clearer on the strength of graphene vs steel but why exactly do you need something that is stronger than steel, wear resistance, corrosion resistance or something else? I got very nervous when you started with the Hydrochloric acid, bare arms and shorts for heavens sake! Spraying all sorts of chemicals with no mask on surely can't be the best thing for your health.
