I was in high school when these came out. I wanted one so much. A couple years later my sister bought one for her newspaper delivery car. Amazing that more than 20 years later it's finally becoming common for cars to get 50+ mpg.

I know this is dumb as hell but I really appreciate this walk through of everything in the insight. I didn't know about the tape deck or substorage space! Nobody else talks about this and there's few, if any, photos online of it. I'm working on buying one and this really helped. Thank you!!

My 2002 Prius also has a belt-driven air conditioning compressor, but Toyota thought of that. There is a special thermally-insulated evaporator in the air conditioning system that maintains cold air even with the engine off. If the evaporator needs to be cooled, the engine will idle for about 30 seconds and then shut off for another couple of minutes.

Very interesting! I wonder how the system maintains high side pressure before the evaporator when the vehicle is off.

Ayeee I got a 2002 Prius too it’s alright mpg I drove a 5th gen and it’s way better mpg but it could be something else with mines but I drive it like a normal car I’m not gonna lie but that’s what’s good abt it and I can step on the gas like crazy and it’ll go down but it last I guess and the 70hp is all I need especially with the light weight I always thought gas cars are faster in a way but I raced my friends 1999 Toyota Corolla and like I was surprisingly gapping him but I don’t mean to abuse Prius like that but all in all I’d take a Prius as a regular daily there just good especially if you’re saving money

@@nle_b345t5 from a stop, the first generation Prius has 258 lb-ft of torque. Total system horsepower is about 100, not 70.

I’m also a Texas insight owner and sometimes when it’s real hot outside my battery won’t last an hour before it goes to a reduced regenerative braking mode due to high battery temps.

Interesting... before I purchased this one a few months back my buddy who owned it replaced the main cooling Fan and I havnt seen any issues since. Btw this one has a Green tech auto battery.

Food for thought you can put an upgraded battery but it is not cheap. For a little bit less, I bought a donor si and swapped full divetrain and dash. The result is a sporty little sleeper that still manages to pull 45 mpg at 70mph all day as a result of the slippery aero and light weight.

Has insulating the AC lines helped? Being from Tx (DFW area) I can 100% relate to the unrelenting heat and the difficulty some cars AC systems have. Even when functioning per factory spec.

I don't have a thermometer to stick in the vent to confirm, but ide say it's helping the system be more efficient.

@@happydaily7324 Nice. I moved to the PNW a couple years ago and just picked up an 01 Insight a few weeks back. We don't have summers or humidity like Tx but we'll have some days that are at or over 100. Will be fun to see how mine handles it. If it struggles I may follow your lead.
