That race had 4 swimmers who held/would hold multiple individual WRs, and had 3 swimmers who would earn individual Olympic gold, 4 who would have individual world gold and 5 that would win individual Olympic or world medals. And 7 would win relay Olympic and world championship gold or minor medals and help break world records. An incredibly deep field.

Im a national swimmer and I can say once you reach a certain level all four strokes are near equal difficulty, In a main set if you know how to sprint properly all strokes are death with the only difference being butterfly is harder to do at a warm up pace (butterfly can't be swum at anything below probably 170 heart rate). I completely agree with you though, the only reason freestylers get more credit is because it's faster than the other strokes meaning it's a test of "the fastest swimmer".

He should of carried on swimming instead of retiring i reckon Thorpe would of got as many medals as Phelps!
@verward4 жыл бұрын
No way. If you don't count Sydney (at which Phelps was 15 and not really a medal contender) Phelps got an average of 7 medals per olympic games. Thorpe only got medals in 6 different events, with a max of 5 at one games. Even if Thorpe would've gone to 4 Olympics in an alternate reality where (because of Thorpe's performances) Australia medals in all 3 relays in '08 and '12, he would only get 19-21 medals (depending on whether you think Thorpe would medal in the 100m freestyle at both the '08 and '12 Olympics. If he would go to 5 olympics and get 6 medals in rio, he still fall short 1 medal from Phelps' all time count. That is only in medal count, not in gold medals, in which Thorpe had an even lower chance to equal Phelps Thorpe is one of the greatest and most talented swimmers ever, even in our version of reality where we only got 4 years of his reign. But he could never get as many medals as Phelps. Phelps simply did too many events. Honestly I think it will be a century before anyone else will get 8 gold medals, even with the new relay.

All people dedicate themselves are great. i see foolish discussions about who is bigger, faster, better. i think, this is because, those brats are too little. Work, train; then you become the Great!

saying Thorpe won because of the suit is like saying klim came second because he's bald, every other swimmer at the time was allowed the suit and didn't use it, that's not proving anything other that either they didn't prefer it or they were stupid and failed to take an opportunity, if you want nothing that could possably effect drag you would basically need a pool full of naked guys because by that logic the swimmers in their simsimplest form are assisting
@JVanDerZant13 жыл бұрын
@janthonysmc787 Freestyle is whatever swimming stroke you want to do. You can legally do fly/breast/back in a freestyle race. It is only in an Individual Medley that you must do the 'front crawl' stroke (a.k.a freestyle).

It's really interesting to hear people talk like this about Thorpe. In hindsight his reign was short. I'd say that after 2003 it was hard to argue that Phelps wasn't the greatest swimmer in the world. However this does show you that Australia really is a great swimming nation in the sense that they treat their athletes right. I don't think Phelps ever was in the same spotlight Thorpe was until much later in his career. Phelps first got to grow up knowing he was the greatest swimmer in the world before he got in the media spotlight. I think their swimming careers went very similarly in the sense that they both "broke through" when they were 15. First only in their signature event (400 fr, 200fly) then expanding the year after their second best event (200 fr, 400 IM) and then exploded into a wide array of events that made everyone question their mortality. They were both arguably the greatest swimmer in the world before they were 18 (this is tricky considering how much overlap they had). I think the main difference is that Thorpe had a lot more media attention on him from the start. because he is Australian where the sport is more popular. Phelps had a similar collapse as Thorpe later on in his career (after the 08/09 and after 12) but bounced back, why that is is up to debate.

Hard to say that Thorpe was better than Mark Spitz. He was probably the second best swimmer of the 20th Century. Definitely the best male swimmer Australia has ever produced and the third best male swimmer of all time. Best male freestyle swimmer of all time though. As far as best Australian swimmer ever, I'd say that Thorpe needs to share that title with Dawn Fraser, even if Dawn has made some objectionable comments over the years.

Maybe the best kick I've ever seen on anyone. And perhaps the most beautiful & efficient stroke I've seen anywhere. And he changed swimming with his exploitation of underwater dolphin at starts & turns. Thorpe basics should create the greatest swimmers and Phelps took those and pushed some of them to new heights. But Phelps never suffered from "waning motivation". Phelps kept going until he couldn't go any further. Thorpe just walked away at his prime and never became what he could have been.

Thorpe was one of the greatest Ill give you that but Phelps is THE greatest. Thorpe set his first individual world record at 16, Phelps at 15. What I think is even more of an accomplishment for Phelps over Thorpe was that Phelps competed in all major international meets from Sydney in 2000 all the way to London in 2012 while Thorpe went from 1998 to 2004. Thorpe attempted to come back in both 2008 and 2012 but failed both times. Don't get me wrong I have immense respect for what Thorpe has done, he is without a doubt one of the greatest of all time; but Phelps is THE greatest of all time and no one can compare to his ability and staying power.

i'm a national swimmer. Phelps was the 200m freestyle world record holder. If you take the personal bests of all those swimmers in the 200 freestyle phelps is the fastest with a 1:42.96. Phelps is able to do it whilst still being one of the greatest backstrokers and the greatest butterflier in the world. I know the 100m free is the most recognized event, it's simply because it's the stroke which you move the fastest not due to difficulty.

This wasn't' a world record for very long. It's been broken 7 times since this event. Even twice more by Thorpe. Phelps then broke that twice. Currently the record, as of this writing is 1:42 flat by Germany - Paul Biedermann in 2009.

Phelps swims 5 other events which he is the or one of the best in the world at. both amazing and achieved greatness and are the 2 greatest swimmers of all time Phelps is more versatile.
@dfisdjnjcsjsjn11 жыл бұрын
your right boutphelps,Thorpe got depression and began drinking nights before morning training which affected his training and then his racing both mentally and physically. I'm guessing it has something to do with him being told his gay his whole life by the media so he started hating it and quit before his peak. Phelps still achieved more and was the faster swimmer so was therefor better i'm not arguing that even if thorpe reached his peak he wouldn't of topped phelps even if his free got faster
