I was eleven years old when I watch this race. It's one of my favorite Talladega races of all time

Surprised no one else has mentioned this, but ESPN needs to be given a ton of credit for their coverage on that day. Keep in mind *ESPN knew they would not be returning to cover NASCAR Winston Cup coverage until 2007 at the earliest during this time* and yet they still gave 110% on this broadcast. Here in 2023, we're stuck with FOX and NBC who seem to only be broadcasting NASCAR and going through the motions, because they have a mandatory contract that says they have to.

"How did he get through all these cars? I don't understand, how he did that!" "Mr restrictor plate will not be denied!" Fans of today look at this and say, well drivers today can pass 16 cars in 5 laps at Talladega. And that's true, if they have a drafting partner and they tandem draft. But in this era of the sport, passing and getting through the field was a lot harder than it is today. The cars then weren't as stable, the drivers were better then in my opinion, the drivers then relied on their spotters, but now the spotters basically tell the driver where to go. I also believe there were more top notch race teams so there were more cars and drivers capable of winning. Also... Even though Talladega isn't a handling track, but in the year 2000 the track hadn't been repaved since like 1979. So the asphalt was at least 21 years old if not more. The track was a lot bumpier and the danger aspect of NASCAR as a whole was a lot higher then that it is now. Now don't get me wrong, Im thankful for the safety Innovations and the safety of the cars is a lot better and the installation of the SAFER barriers has made it a lot safer, but I always felt like the danger aspect of racing was part of the thrill for the fans and made us respect what these drivers do on a weekly basis more bc seriously... When drivers wreck today, with all the safety Innovations there is still the possibility of injury, but in 2000 any crash could seriously injure u. But I feel like all the safety has taken a lot of thrill out of racing. Anyways, this is all just my opinion. Thanks for taking your time to read it. Sorry it was so long.

You'll never see anyone come through the field as Dale did again with this current gen-whatever car.

A lot of "lasts" in this race (Dale Earnhardt's final victory, the last race veteran driver Dave Marcis led a lap, final race sponsored by a brand of tobacco). Earnhardt's teammate, Mike Skinner, led with 2 laps to go before falling off on the final lap and finishing 6th (coupled with a 2nd place finish earlier in the year, those were the closest Skinner would get to a win in NASCAR's top series)

I used to watch NASCAR on the C-Band backhaul feeds every week. I sure miss those days when NASCAR was real and no commercials.

Classy interview with Bobby Labonte at 3:24:35. This was the day after Tony Roper was killed at Texas Motor Speedway during the truck race. He was keeping it all in perspective.

@@chrisrupe3244 he was my OG favorite. I'll never forget when he won his last cup race in 2003 at Homestead and they asked him why he didn't do a burnout. He said he wouldn't feel right doing one on Matt Kenseth's day. I kind of wish he had though, since it was his final win

Dale Earnhardt Sr. didn't need anyone to get back to the front. He got back to the front like that because he is the Intimidator and a wheelman in that 3 car: Dale Earnhardt Sr. It was all him. Even though he won at the age of 49, he's not the oldest winner at Talladega, that goes to Harry Gant who won at age 51 in May 1991. It's going to be so cool seeing that exact car pace the field on Sunday with Richard Childress behind the wheel, the fans are going to go insane. Even though Gordon has 12 plate wins, eight of Earnhardt's ten wins at Talladega were with the plate, while his first two were unrestricted. Gordon has 12, Dale Sr. nabbed 11 in a 41 race starts from Spring 1990 to Fall 2000, and his prodigal son Dale Jr. nabbed 10 plate wins. Even though Skinner never got a Cup win, the final race of 2001 at New Hampshire saw Robby Gordon get that 31 car in victory lane in the last race that Lowe's was the sponsor before moving to Johnson. If Earnhardt survived, I guarantee you that he would have won after turning 50. It would have been a popular win if he somehow managed to win at Auto Club Speedway in 2001 because it was held on his 50th birthday, and he would have joined a list of only three drivers to win on their birthday. For the record, it was his 76th Cup win, not 77th.

Earnhardt never would make it without help from Kenny Wallace, he said it by himself.
