As a fan of baseball but not of either team, it was a shame this series only went five games because all of the games were great. Had it gone 6 or 7 it would be remembered among the better World Series.

"I live in Manhattan. Every time I set foot out of my apartment, I keep hearing Yankee fans telling me 'You better not lose'. Basically, just take these three rings and throw them out the window. This is the one that matters." - Derek Jeter. "This was a campaign promise I made when I ran for mayor the first time (1994): I promised there'd be a Subway Series." - NYC Mayor Rudolph Guiliani "I hate the Yankees as much as I like the Mets. I'd love to see them lose." - One unknown Mets' fan. Ever since Subways roamed New York, there's been plenty of Subway Series between 1921 and 1956 when the Yankees played either the Dodgers (most times) or Giants (few times). The peak of the Subway Series occurred between 1947 and 1956, when 7 of those series involved the Yankees vs. either the Dodgers or Giants. The Yankees won almost all the series, until 1955 when "Next Year" came for Brooklyn. In the last Subway Series in 1956 (won by the Yankees in 7), a Dodgers' fan was at the Bronx to see Don Larsen throw the perfect game. That fan was current Yankees' manager Joe Torre. Now, when the Subway Sub-plots played out, the Yankees and Mets would now square off in MLB's 96th World Series. One team looking for a three-peat and fourth title in five years. The other looking for their third title in their 39 year history. After fans took the 4 train to the Bronx, Game 1 was a pitchers' duel early on between Pettitte and Mets' starter Al Leiter. Both traded zeroes early on. In the 6th, Timo Perez didn't run hard on Todd Zeile fly ball off the top of the wall, and it proved costly when Perez was thrown out at the plate. The Yankees took advantage and scored twice in the bottom half to take the lead. Bobby V's crew did rally the next frame to score three times to go ahead. It was still 3-2, Mets, in the 9th, where with one out, Paul O'Neill worked a 10 pitch at-bat off Benitez and drew a walk. Two singles and a fly ball later tied the game. Then, three innings later, Jose Vizcaino got his 4th hit of the game to score the game winner. Piazza and Clemens dueled in the 1st inning of Game 2. On a 1-and-2 pitch, Piazza broke his bat on a foul ball. The barrel of the bat came to Clemens and the Rocket threw it at the direction of where Piazza headed. There was confusion and anger in this situation, but no punches were thrown and order was restored. The Yankees jumped on Mike Hampton in the first on a pair of two out walks and two singles. Clemens refocused and fanned 9 Mets' batters over 8 innings, allowing only two hits and no runs. The Yankees kept tacking on runs and scored the sixth run in the 8th to up 6-0. The Mets answered in the 9th when Piazza went deep. Then, with two on and two out, Jay Payton took Mariano Rivera downtown for a home run to cut the Yankees' lead to 6-5. One strikeout later, though, the Yankees escaped with a 2-0 lead. The scene now shifted to the 7 Train and Shea Stadium. Benny Agbayani delivered a go-ahead double in the 8th inning as the Mets' scored twice to win Game 3, 4-2, and snap the Yankees' 14-game WS winning streak. But the next night, Derek Jeter hit the first pitch of the game over the wall for a home run. Denny Neagle and the bullpen kept the Mets in check for a 3-2 win and a three to one lead in the series. Game 5: Al Leiter and Andy Pettitte dueled greatly again in a do-or-die scenario for the Mets. Pettitte went 7 innings while Leiter stayed on the mound for the 9th inning of the 2-2 game. With two outs, a walk, a single, and a two-run hit by Luis Sojo put the Yankees ahead 4-2. When Mariano Rivera got Piazza on a fly ball to end the game, the Yankees were crowned champions of New York and of baseball for the third straight time, 4 in 5 years, and 26th time overall. Derek Jeter was named WS MVP for his clutch hitting and 2 home runs in the series. Jeter became the only player to ever be named ASG MVP and WS MVP the same season. Well, SW561, the 2000 MLB season now comes to a close. We now await the 2001 highlights and all that comes with it.....for better or for worse.

The 2000 Yankees become the second team in MLB history to win the World Series with less than 90 games. The following teams have won the World Series with less than 90 wins: - 1987 Twins (85) - 2000 Yankees (87) - 2006 Cardinals (83) - 2014 Giants (88) - 2021 Braves (88). Honorable mentions: - The 1973 Mets ALMOST won the 1973 World Series while having only 82 wins but they lost in game 7 to Oakland - The 1997 Indians ALMOST won the 1997 World Series with 86 wins but they lost game 7 to the Marlins. - As mentioned above, the 2014 Giants (88 wins) won the 2014 World Series. They won it in 7 games against the Royals, and the 2014 Royals themselves had less than 90 wins (89 wins). So that was a World Series of teams with less than 90 wins, which is the only time in MLB history that two teams with less than 90 wins have faced each other in the World Series, as of the end of the 2023 season. - Ironically, Jim Leyland 1997 Marlins faced the 1997 Indians that won 86 games in the World Series, and Jim Leyland 2006 Tigers faced against the 2006 Cardinals in the World Series that won 83 games. Every information above is as of the end of the 2023 season, AND this is not counting any strike-shortened-season nor a season that got shortened due to a World War.

I still feel like this is a Series that should've happened the year before, in 1999. Perhaps the Mets would've had a better chance at beating the Yankees in '99. As it was, the Yankees completed the 3-peat in the 2000 version of the 'Subway Series' against the Mets. And thus the Yankees' late-'90s-early-2000s dynasty was christened.
@vladiator8120
@vladiator8120 Жыл бұрын
Their best chance was in 2000 actually imo, the Yankees stumbled into the playoffs and were not as good as they were the previous couple of years. The peak of the dynasty was 1998/1999, they ran over the Padres like it was nothing and defeated the Braves with ease. I really don't think the Mets would stand a chance in 1999. The Yankees seemed a bit more beatable in 2000, that was the year to beat them but obviously their postseason pedigree kicked in just in time for a 3rd straight championship.

Another clutch postseason hit by Justice. In my opinion, the most clutch postseason hitter in baseball history. As a matter of fact, every Yankee mid-season acquisition in 2000 were just so key for the Yankees, either in the regular season or in the postseason or both: Justice, Canseco, Hill, Polonia, Vizcaino, Sojo

I agree with everyone except Canseco. I just do t remember him getting clutch hits 4 the Yankees in the postseason but I might be wrong. Hill as well wasn't clutch but Sojo, Vizcaino, and Polonia were huge during the 2000 yanks playoff and World series run.

My Mets would have won this World Series had the series returned for game 6 and possibly game 7 in Yankee Stadium. I really wanted the Mets to face Clemens once again in game 6. In game 1, Al Leiter pitches a gem for Armando Benitez to blow it once again for the Mets. Fun fact, Armando Benitez now has 4 blown saves for the Mets in total in 1999 and 2000 postseasons, and all four blown saves have come with Leiter starting. And of course, another extra inning game for the Mets, because why not??? Once again, the Mets in 1999 and 2000 have played so many extra inning games in the postseason or the decisive run was scored in the 9th inning because the Mets love drama. In game 2, I still do not understand how Clemens was not tossed from the game for throwing the bat at Piazza, I mean, that was SO DANGEROUS!!! And with the history between them earlier in the 2000 season of Clemens hitting Piazza. And a nice comeback attempt by the Mets in game 2 off Rivera. In game 3, Mets finally win a game, and El Duque pitches another 2000 postseason great game with 12 strikeouts and over 7 innings. He has been amazing in the 2000 postseason. And of course, in game 5, the game almost went to extra innings for the Mets as usual and they lost at home in a heartbreaking way. Someone please put an end to this boring Yankee dynasty.
