Great car, I wish I had been able to keep mine. I thought I was settling for it when I considered it but during the test drive I realized the car could perform at a higher level than I felt comfortable driving. Just a great car.

I have owned many Porsches. Still have a few in the stable. I owned a 98 Boxster 986 for 20 years. Purchased it back in the year 2000. For a long time it was my daily driver. Over 8 years I put 90k glorious miles on the original 2.5 liter engine with not a single issue. I then wanted more power, so I sourced a 996 911 3.4 liter engine and had that installed. Over the next 12 years I put another 80k miles on the 3.4 liter engine. 170,000 total miles on the car and it was a joy to drive every time I got in and put the top down. Incredible handling, top down fun, and a true drivers car. Smiles for miles. Never a single issue with the engine. No IMS fear and no bore scoring. Had the oil analyzed every oil change. Metals report was clean as a whistle and I drove it worry free for 20 years. It's a shame too many fell for the internet fear mongers and passed this gem up because of what they read on the internet and therefore never got a chance to enjoy Porsche Boxster ownership, or Porsche ownership in general.

Awesome story, I've also thought of sourcing a 996 (or maybe 997.2?) S engine for my Boxster S. That would be perfect. I've had my '01 S about 3 years, can't imagine parting with it. Correct. Toyota helped Porsche survive through efficiency. There is quite a bit of info on how they revamped the production and parts lines. Ultimately, this is why Porsche is not only here but now thriving. I currently own a 986.2S and have have Toyota MR2s as well. Both great small midship sports cars.

I still miss my 2005 Boxster S 5spd grey (soft top too) on black bought in 2007 with less than 7k miles. It was my first Porsche after my 2002 M3 SMG with red on silver. She was very nimble, fast kicking corvettes ass whether a drag race or twisting roads in beautiful California. She was a head turner with lots of fun weekend trips from SF to LA and back.

MSRP for a '24 starts at $82k so prices have increased just around 2% annual for 25 years, about the rate of inflation or a little less. Not bad if you can avoid a dealer markup.

In 2002 I test drove a base model boxster. I was excited at being able to afford a new Porsche but returned the car after 20 minutes because of its size, could not be an everyday car. I told the salesmen who told me to take it for the afternoon to see if I could live with it. I refused.

The first Boxster S, introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year, starting at $50,000 would be $90,000 in today's money. However, you can purchase a brand new 2023 718 Boxster S for $77,500.00. Also, I doubt you will find a car with 350bhp that's under 3300lbs.

Most underrated car ignored by purists and by people that just see it as a hairdressers car and don’t realize for the time as far as mid engine sports cars go The Boxster S was the fastest in it class and best handling beating the s2000,non M bmw z cars, first gen Merc slk.Shame shoddy reliability and a higher price with a bad reputation for being a poor man’s 911 killed it. Another note about power it makes 50hp less than the equivalent 911 because it was purposely tuned down and still uses the 2.5 base Boxster intake and exhaust to feed the bigger engine with some bolt ons you can meals 280hp like the 987.1 Boxster s and if you look into it the 986 has a lot of aftermarket support more than people give it credit for…
