To my eyes, Dawes is so much more solid, strong, smooth, and elegantly in control as a 23 year old woman than she ever was at ages 15 and 19. Her skills are just so polished, and her grown-up body really works in her favor on every apparatus. Absolutely stunning!

@russianskatingfan Dawes was put on the team for the same reason that Shannon wouldve been,experience and resume. Shannon got injured, n Dawes stayed healthy n hit. I always say that Dawes n Atler (along w Memmel) were the 3 most TALENTED gymns in US history, and I think Atler was left off because her mental game just wasnt there. She cracked repeatedly here, n many times before, n Dawes was known for hitting big in team comps. I hate the Dawes vs Atler thing everyone makes up on here...

Atler was a fantastic, talented gymnast, but she just couldn't handle the pressure.

y'all are bitching about Vanessa and guess what? she's Still not Dawes, Chow, or Miller. So stop. how is she the most talented? she's not! and can you please tell me what you would do with a stress fracture in your leg and if you could get To the Same level as Chow, Dawes, And Miller after 18 or 19 year's In Gymnastics and Two Olympic team, and a Gold? I think it'd be amazing to get back to the elite level At 23, after 2 Olympic teams. what Shannon did was Great! then she was going through cancer after that a Few years after this. she's amazing and So Is Her teammates. Vanessa was not. she could not handle the pressure obviously. mentally not prepared. but again, she's not a Miller. Dawes. or Chow.

I think the reason Shannon wasnt named to the team is easy to see. The only event she showed any potential to score highly here was bars and the U.S already had enough depth on bars. Granted you could say the same thing about Dawes, but I think Dawes was just put on the team to block Alter.

Based on what. She had done nothing in competition this year to earn a spot on the team. The only place she could score high was bars where the U.S had enough depth anyway.

@dmann3g Dawes was past her prime and not capable of big scores on anything but bars at this point. The team already had an amazing bars lineup, they did not need Dawes for bars. They needed more depth on the other events and Atler not Dawes at this point provided that.

damn as much as i love Dawes i don't think she should have been picked for the 2000 Olympic Gymnastics team.

Victor Bisbal I totally agree with you! They should've taken Atler over Dawes. Atler could've contributed on vault, beam and floor. The US might've been able to win the bronze medal.

The entire team selection process is biased! Bela Karolyi likes gymnasts who fit his prejudices-- cute, deferential pixies who only show emotion when it's time to charm the crowds and judges. He nearly cut Jamie Dantzscher because he didn't like the fact that she chewed gum and wore headphones when not training or performing. And I still feel that he jobbed her out of a chance to compete in the all-around because of her "rolling her ankle" to punish her for not showing the correct, worshipful attitude toward him. As if every other team member wasn't injured in one way or another!

Dominique Dawes has ugly feet, this is particularly noticeable on the bars. Socks do not stretched as flat irons ... She felt sorry for the judges, putting a high enough rating. The team was supposed to be Vanessa. Rivals in Sydney had to say "thank you" American coaches, that does not have Vanessa and much weakened team.
