Alan Grant, for me, was perhaps the most underrated comic book writer of all time. His work on 2000AD, Batman, Lobo and others was of the highest quality and often could stand up alongside that of Alan Moore etc but he did it week in week out. He is the only comic star who caused me to get all fanboyish and clam up.

I met Alan a few times. Signed my book of Judge Dredd newspaper comics as "T.B. Grover" because that's the kind of wind up merchant that he was. Had this underlying sense of bitter rage that he let out into the world with an acidic comedy that could burn through steel girders. I think as well he was a bit mad too. Not like certifiable, just that he had the same Terry Gilliam levels of "I'm incredibly pissed off and THIS is my target". Strontium Dog certainly contained his best work and easily my favourite stuff from the Prog (Same as John Wagner). My thoughts and feelings go out to his wife and family.

It's a God-tier highly influential comic that is still going strong. The closest thing to 2000AD currently in the US is Image Comics (Vertigo used to be the closest when they still existed, but that was because pretty much all the Vertigo writers and artists were originally from 2000AD.)

A "Like" really doest seem adequate for this. What an absolute joy to hear Alan and John interviewed together. Great stuff!

I read 'Apocalypse War' before I saw 'Doctor Strangelove', read 'The Day the Law Died' before I saw the 'Caligula' TV series (or read any of Robert Graves), but I did see the 'Generation Game' before I read 'Sob Story' (or whatever the first Otto Sump story was) - all three (and many more) stack up very well (if not better than) their inspirations. Here's to the guys that gave life to (and in some cases killed) Uncle Ump, Wulf Sternhammer and Sam Slade (amongst others). I didn't even know what a 'dug' was until Alan included Dougal in the 'Strontium Dog' strip. To echo Garth - we shall not see his like again...

like mclvanney, alan had a knack for working class jock parlance. Never too keen to impress or too clever, just hugely streetwise and naturally hilarious. My favourite two thou writer by a good stretch. his stronty work alongside the dots n dashes of esquerra is heaven (slightly damp, loft stored bad boys bust currently open on lap)

I did like hearing the the Return of Mulchar and the 2000AD Thrill-Cast all be it under sad circumstances. It was a very interesting interview, Sounded Good to me. I guess Alan had to really get out he hated Puzzle books. They used to be next to the Comic books. I remember that.

I grew up reading his stories (often under an alias with John Wagner). 2000 AD and Eagle stories like Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog and Doomlord and Manix.
