i'm finally back with another video essay! a little less movie focused and more about fashion in general. as someone who actually lived through these trends it's pretty weird seeing 2000s outfits and fashion return, but that's probably how people felt about the 90s comeback as well. what 2000s trend are you most excited about?

This might be unpopular, but i'm a little excited for a 2000s comeback with some trends. Being born in the late '90s, i was in that very awkward window where i wasn't really old enough to wear a lot of the clothing that was popular then (especially with my conservative mom buying my clothes), but i still idolized it from a distance. It would be kinda fun to finally live my childhood dream.

I believe with online shopping and the inclusivity trend this won't happen, low rise is not flattering to anyone without a flat stomach, and there will always be smaller brands to cater for alternative fashion. Plus even if teens dictate the trend they are not the ones with the money to buy them, as long as there are people willing to spend money on whatever it is, there will be someone to supply that.

Mini rant: I love that the look of my tweens is coming back but think we all need to be mindful of one of the biggest side effects of trends like crop tees and low rise bottoms - excessive dieting and bad body image. It’s not a coincidence that celebrities who were Y2K icons like Nicole Richie, the Olsens, LiLo, Paris Hilton and Victoria Beckham were all painfully underweight at one time or another in that period. Many of my generation (myself included) developed insecurities about our tummies, hips and bums because of trends like those. It’s partly why I think we all embrace high waisted jeans and skater silhouettes because they are flattering on a wider range of body types and ages and are more versatile in terms of dressing up or down. TL;DR I love this aesthetic but as a 2000s teen, learn from our mistakes and remember that the fashion is the trend, not the attitude that promoted harmful body standards and EDs! You don’t have to have a tiny frame and/or be a teen to wear whatever the hell you want to! ❤️

The so-called trends you see in the lower priced stores are usually a bit out of date anyway. If you watch the runway shows and try to emulate some of the looks you like it can take up to two years to find these looks in the stores even if you live in a big city. If you’re lucky you might find them at the thrift store. My solution has been to not throw anything that’s high quality and looks good on me away. If I feel it’s not in style at the moment it stays in storage. You need space and have to store them properly. If your weight fluctuates, keep things that are a one size smaller or larger. This year the skinnies go into storage (though in the videos I watch of people walking around Paris people are still wearing and looking good in them); the black and white striped t-shirt I got at the Gap in 2012 comes out.

And even if something isn't available anymore (which is unlikelable), you can still find it secondhand because of the huge fashion consumption in the last two decades (for better or worse) Also, I was a child in the 2000's, so I don't know whether to like these trends or not - It isn't nostalgic for me, but it also isn't truly new as I saw older cousins etc wear them and when I was in early teen in the 2010's when 2000's fashion was a NONONO, I feel like that is very stuck in my brain.

I agree. Personally, I really like the fact that fashion at the moment allows you to be yourself a bit more, but at the same time I do wish modern fashion had a bit more of an identity - it would be cool if we came up with something new that is actually wearable and that people in the future could look back on.

Yes! I think also because of the rise of thrifting, 70s, 80s, 90s, Y2K and some 10s trends are trendy all at once. I feel like the biggest trend rn is borrowing from the past in a way that suits you individually.

The new iteration of the “whale tale” looks almost more like a waist or hip “definer” it loses the “trashy” vibe IMO by making it look more like a waist accessory than simply an exposed thong. I don’t hate it.

One of the “trends” I love about current fashion is that most items from the past can be worn and look current, thanks to the increase in vintage/pre-owned shopping and wardrobe sustainability. A blazer from the any decade since the 1960s just seems to work, for example. The other trend I love is the increase in comfort, especially in footwear, although not the increasing informality than seems to come with it. We are already a world of loungewear and sneakers and even pajamas, but I think it’s possible to be comfortable and still really stylish a d not look like we’re coming back sweaty from the gym. For example, why do stretchy-waist pants always have to have gym-style dangling drawstrings? Get rid of those, keep the stretch, and it looks a lot sharper.

I also thought the actual whale tail was accidental, but exposing one's underwear was deliberate. Manny's bedazzled blue thong was a bit extreme, but in No Doubt's "Hey Baby" Gwen Stefani was clearly showing the sides of her red thong. I can't remember when it began, but showing the elastic waistband that said "Calvin Klein" or whatever was also a trend back in the day.
@Ginatus

Yes, that's true! I had forgotten all about that. So I guess that was kind of the male equivalent haha. And at least in my country the 2000s also saw the rise of hip-hop and baggy pants where they also applied the "how low can you go" principle :D. But yeah, in general underwear was exposed a lot more, not only thongs. Maybe in part because of the trend, but then again it was kind of inevitable with those low-rise pants. So I guess people just embraced it...

I was born in the 90s and grew up during the 2000s. I feel like we tend to remember the more outlandish trends but we forget how most styles were just seen as normal clothes Back then, it was hard for me to imagine a world where everyone wasn't wearing bootcut and low rise jeans...well, until skinny high rise jeans came in style. We also often forget that normal people usually ended up with a water downed version of the trend. If juicy couture sweatsuits were popular in the early 2000s, by 2006 I was wearing a velour tracksuit from Kmart to school. As the Y2K look comes back in fashion, I think it will be the more wild and fun aspects that come back in style and it will also be updated to modern tastes. There will be things that aren't even accurate to the time that will be marketed Y2K or vintage to be cool and trendy, the same way we had "90s" makeup in the 2010s that no one in the 90s would have worn. But we will see.

Popular trends I remember... was a High-schooler in the US, Y2K- (I was 15 in 2000). Here are some examples of outfits/ early brand aesthetics I remember from then, but it is not all or limited to... but may be helpful to those interested: I'd say look at old catalogs/magazines/Family photos from that time if you can find them/ have access to them. There was alot of diversity and representation where I grew up even then, which is absolutely wonderful to see in every aesthetic. However many people dressed according to the music they were into. Street style- was very in, many independent owned shops, lots of Tracksuits, creative denim, popular sneaker brands Like Nike and Adidas. Babyphat and Kangol were big where I lived. Skate style- "Pac Sun" skate shirts for skateboard brands, widest leg pants, "stovetop" style usually med blue to darkest washes- some had studs down the legs, typically worn low-slung, with a crop top, muscle top or layered band/logo t-over long sleeve shirt and a ball chain style choker with a pyramid belt. etc. Hoodies. So. Many. Hoodies. Anything 90's/00's Alt "Hot topic" (Band tees Typically Goth and industrial bands but some pop punk as well, Evil bunny, Tripp NYC- Matching Tartan corset top to matching skirts usually bought together as a set, Emily the strange shirts, obscure buttons, TUK shoes/boots, pins hair dye, piercings, Fishnet tops and stockings, long socks, belts, chains, Etc.) Anything "Alloy" catalog- Your typical softer or basic fashion with really durable basics. Patchwork skirts and flared pants, ditsy floral dresses or striped ones, Eyelet fabric, matching crop and skirt sets, hair clips, lipgloss and glitter makeup. T-shirts with cutesy drawn characters on them, long boxy Denim skirts, or pencil ones... most of this style stuff you could also get at department stores of various price ranges. Anything "Delia's" catalog- identical to Alloy "Abercrombie and Fitch" (Logo Mania, all their basics were "In". Reserved for the popular/wealthier kids in the area I grew up) "Old Navy" aesthetic (Logo Mania, For those that wanted to be fashionable but didn't want to pay the Abercrombie price, but faster fashion pieces than A&F. Band Tees especially- Underground Rap, Reggae, Ska, Punk, Grunge, Rock, Shoegaze, Goth, industrial, Metal, Pop-Punk, Pop and Classic Rock, Country. So basically- Music and film diversity was very, very in! Tapes/CDs/Walkman/wrap around behind the ear headphones Anime culture/DVDs Hoodies Carhartt style jackets Long boxy Denim skirts Peasant tops-short and long sleeved blouses Ditsy floral print tops in cheesecloth like fabric Low rise skirts/pants Boot cut and flared pants Muscle tanks Corderoy and velvet materials Messenger bags and jackets covered in patches and pins low Flatform sandals Big gemstone pendants and matching earrings Hoop earrings Ball Chain chokers Pastel sweaters Skate shoes Plain baseball raglan tops Cap-sleeved printed tops I could go on...but lots of trends. Chinese culture and symbols were also really iconic during this era - the yin yang sign, silky jacquard/brocade fabrics with intricate pastoral motifs (similar to the fabric used to make Cheongsams), Cheongsam-style dresses and tops (often with the Mandarin collar and fabric-covered buttons), dragon motifs, “karma bracelets” (though named after a Hindu concept, I think the beads were supposed to mimic stones that held significance in Chinese culture and traditional healing such as Jade and Amethyst) and of course random Chinese characters. I feel like some of that has been making a bit of a comeback, though with a bit more sensitivity to recognising the origins and sacred significance. I really love the yin yang symbol, and a few years ago I did some research into the philosophical meaning behind it as part of a fashion design project inspired by duality - it’s really fascinating and something I related to a lot in how I view the world. However I’m having a hard time finding out whether there is an element of cultural appropriation for non-Chinese people to wear, use or display it.
@catmerchant8699
@catmerchant8699 2 жыл бұрын
No. I can assure you Chinese people don’t care, because young Chinese don’t actually care either. Firstly Ying yang stems from philosophy and not religion. Secondly Chinese will just laugh if you wear Chinese characters on your shirt which don’t make sense, the same way they also wear random English word shirts. And cheongsam dress is not so cared about because it’s cultural class importance is not high, it wasn’t worn by high level people in china.Chinese street fashion includes cheongsam style clothes which are worn in china. Even sexualised versions aren’t really cared about. In my history of research I would only say significantly important cultural clothes should be left out of trends, such as traditional wedding outfits, and kimono, hanfu etc because it’s still worn frequently in those countries , not as daily wear but on certain occasion. But actually it doesn’t really matter in the end, because realistically the east and west is far divided by fashion and beauty trends, whatever we do in the west won’t effect them. Asia will still wear it the way they’re expected to and maintain their cultural significance, no matter we butcher it or not. Asian Americans get triggered even if you wear cultural clothes the correct way because majority of the time they don’t even speak the language of the native country and are raised in western culture, thinking the same as white Americans. I suggest to avoid these young people on the internet because they have a lot of time and feel to get mad at something. Unless you plan to wear such things in their country it doesn’t matter. It’s not destroying or simplifying their culture just because Kim k did it the wrong way. The most they’ll think is ‘I don’t want foreigners to think that’s the correct way to wear it, but I trust that people who have 1% brain power can know the correct way to do it by asking someone who knows/personal research if they wanted to wear it, and even if they got it a bit wrong I’m still happy that they’re interested in my culture’ and then will move on.

This video has helped me appreciate my own fashion journey. The benefit of getting older is that I keep the trends that I liked and that looked flattering on me from each of those eras. I remember a time when I was acutely aware of hem lines and neck lines and sleeves and handbags. Now I take what I like and leave the rest. My closet is a rainbow of decades. I love seeing the changing trends and appreciate new trends as they come along because it exposes me to some thing that I might not have considered before. I will accept the worst of the 2000s fashions comebacks as long as low rise jeans stay dead.
