Something about all these trends has always felt so..."cheap" or artificial for me, even compared to the decade before. I think what really makes this era so mediocre fashion-wise in my book is due to the explosion of fast fashion. Not that clothes today are made any better, but I feel like this time period really marked the current decline in quality. I can't really see much of these clothes being in the condition to be thrifted if any of these trends ever get revived twenty years from now.

This is probably why one of the real trends of mid 90's hasn't really made an appearance. The sown in wedges to turn skinny and straight jeans to bootcuts and widelegs. There were few years around 94 when everyone at school had atleast a pair of jeans they had altered. But back then jeans were expensive and build to last. You don't see that much in the fashion pics, since it was the budget solution. The ripped of waistband (to make low waist) that came little later at least was preseved in some music videos.

Skater skirts have a better silhouette for giving a small waist than tennis skirts do so I disagree with you, they serve a purpose. Also bandage dresses are flattering to curvy bodies so long as it's one solid color and I think that also serves a purpose for hourglass and pear shaped girls. I can't tell you how hard it is to find a flattering evening dress when you have a larger chest. Bandage dresses are a life saver.

My hot take is that the 2010s weren’t actually the “worst time for fashion”. It’s just a lot of people with that take were in their middle school cringe era or other awkward phase at the time, and they’d feel different if they were wearing skinny jeans or whatever at age 17 in 2013 versus at age 12 in 2013. Anecdotally, I was 17 in 2013 (turned 18 later that year) and had the same take about the early-mid 2000s having the “objectively worst” fashion (because that was my cringe era). Other people who think the early 2010s were somehow uniquely bad fashion-wise are just very into fashion and we’re simply on the other side of the trend cycle.

I grew up at the time that people hated 80's fashion, then in 2000, people hated 90's fashion. Now, I am seeing so much of 80's, 90's, and sometimes even 00's fashion coming back. So my point is, wear what you want to wear rather than wearing what everyone is wearing. Fashion is cyclical, enjoy what you have at the moment and don't be embarrassed of what you wore years ago, be proud of the memories associated with it. Fashion trend is a scam brought about by the unethical fashion industry.
@JabFam3 жыл бұрын
Spot on.
@Pomagranite1673 жыл бұрын
Also adding: Having a sense of style does not require the following of trends. The best dressed people I know don't follow trends, but rather, if they shop for clothing, they buy things that look good on them, fit with stuff they already have in the closet, fits their current style (not the style they yearn for that is totally impractical for them), and that they feel comfortable and confident in. A girl in a well-styled harajuku outfit probably looks better than your fav celeb wearing a mish-mash of the latest trend. Make your closet fit your own aesthetic, not trends, and you will will look and feel on point most of the time.

I didn't and still don't wear skirts and I thought they were really cute! easy to style, flattering for everyone, usually reasonably priced, can be dressed up or down, etc. with tennis skirts (that I think the narrator partially only likes better because they are what's on trend now but will also look dated in a few years), they're more likely to be unflattering and make your legs look shorter because the pleats start lower than the average pleated skirt and can cut off at an awkward length for the modern eye. they seem a bit harder to incorporate into one's personal style, too, as they pair best with only certain items. I say wear what you want, and also, a lot of major retailers sell basic skater silhouettes to this day so it's still being worn anyhow and for good reason, methinks.

You can tell the girl who made this video is very much influenced by what's trendy. Anything that still is somewhat trendy now, she claims "isn't the worst" - (distressed jeans, circle skirts but claims pleated skirts are better). Anything that was distinctly from that period, even though she says she owned it and wore it she claims is hideous or ugly. Things can be off trend without being hideous IMO and you can mix and match trendy pieces from different periods and still look fashionable. She claims skinny jeans aren't flattering on anyone, including plus size and wide legged pants would look much better but there's a reason a lot of plus size or curvey people have stuck with their skinny jeans. They can definitely be flattering and don't always make you look "disproportionate" like the girl in the video claims. Proportions are just that- proportional and depend on your own figure as well as what you pair with it. It was an interesting video but you can easily spot how manipulated she is by what's considered fashionable by mainstream media.

If I were to get something high heeled, I'd love to try tabi boots like Maison Margiela ones, but they're either super expensive, or super cheap rip offs. I guess this is an unpopular opinion but I think high-low dresses/skirts are really pretty. Loved them back then and while I don't buy them as often now, I still adore the style. I think the cut is cute and elegant while remaining modest. I'm honestly having a hard time seeing the same negatives that moderngurlz sees in them and struggle to see what looks nice about the odd asymmetrical cut she prefers.
@CreoTan2 жыл бұрын
I agree! I love high-low cuts because they’re usually very flowy and feminine without looking too “prudish.” They were amazing for hot weather when I wanted to be cool and have my legs exposed without my butt hanging out As a short and curvy person, skirts riding up or being too short in the back is one of my biggest issues-high-lows completely solve it so I don’t have to worry!

Yes. I used to love skinny jeans so much, but by my senior year in 2013, I got more into straight leg and boyfriend jeans. It was mostly for a retro aesthetic, but in recent years, I just feel like my ankles and calves are too small in comparison to my wide hips to wear skinny jeans all the time.

@@MONET8iAM I'm probably a lot older than anyone else here, having been a teenager during the 90's. I have loathed this extensive skinny jeans trend. I have thick calves, always have, always will. It was impossible to find jeans (or often other trousers as well) that would fit. I don't mind showing the shape of my legs, but no matter how much strech there was, when my calves would fit the waist was too big to stay up. So I resorted to 90's broke teenager solution of ripping the sideseem and adding a wedge. Btw, nothing wrong with low waist, it won't work for everyone, but neather does high waist. And you don't need to go to the extreme with eather.
@infamoussphere72283 жыл бұрын
@@Ruinwyn oh man I agree, I couldn't even do the skinny jeans trend even if I'd wanted to, because the jeans would just...not go over my calves. I have the sturdy legs of a clydesdale. And when skinny jeans were in, it was extremely difficult to find anything else. Thankfully I managed to find bootcut or straight leg jeans at less fashionable jeans shops. I'm ok with having low waisted pants because the way I'm shaped...almost all of my pants end up low rise anyway. They just automatically fall down to that point. High waisted pants don't work that well because I have a very long torso and most pants just don't have that big of a rise.

I get what you're saying and obviously fast fashion is awful on a hundred different levels. But let's be honest, mustachioed bespectacled owl print peplum tops wouldn't be destined for a giant comeback even if the construction and material were top quality. The impact of fast fashion on this decade also includes the rejection of it though. Normcore was a massive trend of the 2010s and sustainability became a mainstream concern. Reformation was huge throughout the decade. Practical and durable brands like Birkenstock and Patagonia were suddenly considered cool. That stuff will last until it comes back in style.

To be fair, EVERY decade is a bad decade for fashion. It just depends on what trends you focus on and how they're relevant to the present. All fashion from 10-15 years ago is going to look bad and outdated, no matter what point in time we are.
@tamarleahh.21503 жыл бұрын
Actually Edwardian was nice but too formal for today
@heathercameron14853 жыл бұрын
@@tamarleahh.2150 Even Edwardian elements came back into fashion: long skirts in the 70's, lacy frills in the 70's and 80's, mutton chop sleeves in the 80's. There was actually a lot of Edwardian inspired elements in 80's fashion, particularly with the silhouette and in formal wear.
@sleepyy_kittyy3 жыл бұрын
Tldr: skater skirts ARE inspired from Edwardian times yup, not to mention the one and only Christian Dior bringing back Edwardian themes in his first Couture House collection. In fact, skater skirts are indirectly inspired by Edwardian times- The nipped waist trend was very popular throughout the Edwardian era. However, after the world wars, women's fashion turned boxy and utilitarian, with little figure showing at all. Need I remind you of figureless silhouettes of the 20s? Dior opened his own house after ww2, and was one of the first designers to bring back the curvy figure, nipped waist, and full skirt figure that we associate with the 50s. He was inspired by Edwardian silhouettes, which is when his mother grew up. He would often go to balls and masquerades as a child, where everyone would get dressed up, which awakened his love of fashion. And we see how he never forgot this style when he brought back that silhouette in the 40s. The skirts are more full, of course, than Edwardian day wear, but this is also because women didn't wear corsets in the 50s anymore, and the bigger the skirt looked, the smaller the waist. So, if Edwardian waists inspired poodle skirts, and poodle skirts inspired skater skirts, then skater skirts ARE inspired by Edwardian times. And I'm very glad Dior did bring it back- imagine if we were all still dressed in sequined potato sacks like in the 20s?!

Hard disagree on a lot of these, and this is a particularly juvenile take on fashion. We cringe hardest at fashion trends from 10-15 years ago. Many of today’s trends (frogs, cottagecore, egirl, demonias) will eventually be looked upon with disdain. Fashion is cyclic. The Lita paved the way for many of the chunky shoe trends we see today. Skinny jeans are out, but it’s because we are bored of them, not because they’re bad. In 10-20 years, we’ll only remember the best bits of 2010s fashion and bring them back with modern twists.

Tbh I think it's super biased like. A LOT of these trends were especially popular with, or at least forgiving to, curvier and bigger women. It's STILL difficult to find a nice plus size dress that doesn't have a "high-low" skirt situation. Skater skirts are still everywhere because they're so flattering. Jeggings were comfortable, and easy to fit due to elastic. Like damn, she just wants skinny people fashion lol

I agree with you on that, but skinny jeans actually are inherently bad lmao. They are easily the most uncomfortable garment I have ever had the displeasure of wearing, they look unflattering on everyone, and there's no outfit you can make with them that wouldn't look better with literally any other type of jeans, or with regular leggings.
