I didn't and still don't wear skirts and I thought they were really cute! easy to style, flattering for everyone, usually reasonably priced, can be dressed up or down, etc. with tennis skirts (that I think the narrator partially only likes better because they are what's on trend now but will also look dated in a few years), they're more likely to be unflattering and make your legs look shorter because the pleats start lower than the average pleated skirt and can cut off at an awkward length for the modern eye. they seem a bit harder to incorporate into one's personal style, too, as they pair best with only certain items. I say wear what you want, and also, a lot of major retailers sell basic skater silhouettes to this day so it's still being worn anyhow and for good reason, methinks.

Whenever I really look at 2010’s fashion, the thing that really strikes me is how cheap everything looked. Cheap fabric, cheap patterns, terrible imitation leather, horrible craftsmanship, etc.... I’m sure it’s at least partially due to the popularity of fast fashion, and because of that I’m sure we won’t see the end of it this decade...

This is probably why one of the real trends of mid 90's hasn't really made an appearance. The sown in wedges to turn skinny and straight jeans to bootcuts and widelegs. There were few years around 94 when everyone at school had atleast a pair of jeans they had altered. But back then jeans were expensive and build to last. You don't see that much in the fashion pics, since it was the budget solution. The ripped of waistband (to make low waist) that came little later at least was preseved in some music videos.

Something about all these trends has always felt so..."cheap" or artificial for me, even compared to the decade before. I think what really makes this era so mediocre fashion-wise in my book is due to the explosion of fast fashion. Not that clothes today are made any better, but I feel like this time period really marked the current decline in quality. I can't really see much of these clothes being in the condition to be thrifted if any of these trends ever get revived twenty years from now.

I have a pair of vintage Canadian heeled boots with a similar type of heel and that's all I can wear because of a joint issue that greatly affects my ankle and hip stability. Although once the barefoot/minimalist trend started, I jumped on that because I need the extra balance, and still buy only flat wide toe shoes. If I were to get something high heeled, I'd love to try tabi boots like Maison Margiela ones, but they're either super expensive, or super cheap rip offs. I just wonder if the separate big toe would help with stability at all.

My hot take is that the 2010s weren’t actually the “worst time for fashion”. It’s just a lot of people with that take were in their middle school cringe era or other awkward phase at the time, and they’d feel different if they were wearing skinny jeans or whatever at age 17 in 2013 versus at age 12 in 2013. Anecdotally, I was 17 in 2013 (turned 18 later that year) and had the same take about the early-mid 2000s having the “objectively worst” fashion (because that was my cringe era). Other people who think the early 2010s were somehow uniquely bad fashion-wise are just very into fashion and we’re simply on the other side of the trend cycle.

Honestly, why? The only thing wrong with most of these is that they went “out of style”… Clothing and different fashion trends aren’t inherently good or bad, what’s important is having fun with self expression, or making that self expression a reflection of who we are or what we feel. Life is a lot more fun when you just live it, without worrying about what’s “cringe” or “awkward”.

@@wetsock7790 The point is to have some self-awareness. The only reason these trends seem bad now is because we all got bored of them. There's nothing inherent to tennis skirts that makes them better than skater skirts, tennis skirts are just trendy at the moment while skater skirts are not. In 10 years when skater skirts are trendy and tennis skirts are boring, people will make videos saying skater skirts are so much better than ugly tennis skirts. In 10 years skater skirts will be back in and you will look back and think you were silly to believe that they're "objectively" ugly. People used to say the exact same thing you're saying now about the y2k era, including that low-rise is objectively ugly/unflattering, and that with the rise of brands for teen clothing the quality of clothes had dropped. People have been wearing "cheap," "low quality," "unflattering" polyester since at least the 70s and today those clothes are largely intact and coveted as vintage items. Self-awareness, please. Being a snob is never trendy.

@@wetsock7790 Galaxy print is not coming back. If you don't want people to call you a snob, don't be one. I know kids have a hard time with that because making over-the-top judgements and drawing hard lines in the sand is how kids start to shape their identities, but you have to learn eventually. Obviously everyone likes some trends and not others, that doesn't change anything. Every kid hates the most recent fashion era that is now dated. In the 60s there were plenty of shitty low quality peter pan collar mini dresses, the 60s were famous for an explosion in youth fashion that - you guessed it - resulted in a lot of cheaper, lower quality clothes. You'll have more perspective on this when you're older & you're thrifting clothes that were produced in the 2010's. :/

@@wetsock7790 You don't have to make a good argument for any fashion period because it's all aesthetics at the end of the day and aesthetics are inherently subjective. You're the one who made this about you. The original comment you replied to is about the video, you replied defending the video and then made it about yourself. Being into historical fashion is great, it's still subjective. Also a tube dress means a dress with a tube top bodice. No idea what you're talking about by referring to peter pan collar dresses as tube dresses, do you mean they don't have darts? Shift dresses were also popular in the 60s.

I guess this is an unpopular opinion but I think high-low dresses/skirts are really pretty. Loved them back then and while I don't buy them as often now, I still adore the style. I think the cut is cute and elegant while remaining modest. I'm honestly having a hard time seeing the same negatives that moderngurlz sees in them and struggle to see what looks nice about the odd asymmetrical cut she prefers.

I agree! I love high-low cuts because they’re usually very flowy and feminine without looking too “prudish.” They were amazing for hot weather when I wanted to be cool and have my legs exposed without my butt hanging out As a short and curvy person, skirts riding up or being too short in the back is one of my biggest issues-high-lows completely solve it so I don’t have to worry!

I was never ever able to shop any of these trends so, I decided to learn how to sew. Studded shorts, galaxy print tshirts, high low skirts, skater skirts. I made all these things myself and boy how happy I was wearing all those things however, I would spend hours online looking for ideas, patterns, fabrics but wishing deep inside I could just afford to buy them. Hard disagree on a lot of these, and this is a particularly juvenile take on fashion. We cringe hardest at fashion trends from 10-15 years ago. Many of today’s trends (frogs, cottagecore, egirl, demonias) will eventually be looked upon with disdain. Fashion is cyclic. The Lita paved the way for many of the chunky shoe trends we see today. Skinny jeans are out, but it’s because we are bored of them, not because they’re bad. In 10-20 years, we’ll only remember the best bits of 2010s fashion and bring them back with modern twists.

Tbh I think it's super biased like. A LOT of these trends were especially popular with, or at least forgiving to, curvier and bigger women. It's STILL difficult to find a nice plus size dress that doesn't have a "high-low" skirt situation. Skater skirts are still everywhere because they're so flattering. Jeggings were comfortable, and easy to fit due to elastic. Like damn, she just wants skinny people fashion lol
@strixalu

I agree with you on that, but skinny jeans actually are inherently bad lmao. They are easily the most uncomfortable garment I have ever had the displeasure of wearing, they look unflattering on everyone, and there's no outfit you can make with them that wouldn't look better with literally any other type of jeans, or with regular leggings. They really make me sympathize with the jegging wearers of the 2010s-at least they were comfortable

So my point is, wear what you want to wear rather than wearing what everyone is wearing. Fashion is cyclical, enjoy what you have at the moment and don't be embarrassed of what you wore years ago, be proud of the memories associated with it. Fashion trend is a scam brought about by the unethical fashion industry.

Also adding: Having a sense of style does not require the following of trends. The best dressed people I know don't follow trends, but rather, if they shop for clothing, they buy things that look good on them, fit with stuff they already have in the closet, fits their current style (not the style they yearn for that is totally impractical for them), and that they feel comfortable and confident in. A girl in a well-styled harajuku outfit probably looks better than your fav celeb wearing a mish-mash of the latest trend. Make your closet fit your own aesthetic, not trends, and you will will look and feel on point most of the time.

I don’t think ANY of these trends were “bad” or “cringe” actually! 😅 I literally *can’t* think of them that way. When I was sporting some of these looks, a lot of people (including myself!) thought the aesthetics of the 2000s were absolutely terrible. “Can you believe anyone ever wore low-rise jeans lol? Who would purposefully want to wear that, they were so ugly!” I used not be able to believe I wore tight cropped tees, and talked about how unflattering they were. I talked about the 2000s trends in the EXACT same way as people are now talking about 2010s trends. And now, those 2000s clothes are back in style, and all the times my mom told me, “Fashion comes and goes in cycles,” keeps repeating in my head. No matter what we think now, in 2030, we are gonna find a way to unjustify every one of these 2020s trends, I promise you. Fashion never gets “better” or “worse” unless it’s in regards to the comfort and freedom of the wearer. Gen Z embracing all the trends I (once loved, then) hated is showing me that there’s no point in mocking any trends, they’ll always come back, one way or the other! ☺️ I personally like the way the 2010s embraced the curvier aesthetic, I became blessed in certain areas quite early on and was glad that I went from being mocked in the 2000s to complimented in the 2010s. Now the ideal body shape is changing once again and no longer looks like mine. Thankfully I don’t have to deal with high school drama anymore and in all these years, I’ve grown to love myself the way I am. The upcoming years might not be too kind to girls built like me, but I hope they realize that what goes around comes around and that the ideal will come to fit them once again in the future, so they should keep their chins up! All of you are beautiful nevertheless ☺️

Skater skirts have a better silhouette for giving a small waist than tennis skirts do so I disagree with you, they serve a purpose. Also bandage dresses are flattering to curvy bodies so long as it's one solid color and I think that also serves a purpose for hourglass and pear shaped girls. I can't tell you how hard it is to find a flattering evening dress when you have a larger chest. Bandage dresses are a life saver.

@@MandyMeowington5 she probably just thinks they were ugly reminder its a matter of opinion !!! but they were really overused and basic. skater skirts look great on all body types which is WHY theyre so basic. maybe in a few years well all hate flared leggings just as much as skater skirts. its not really because theyre body positive, but because they were overused. imo, i like the skater skirts because they're basically the flared leggings of the 2010's, but theyre outdated now. i would personally NEVER wear a skater skirt, but maybe theres some people who could make it look decent

The 2010s were not any more derivative of earlier styles than other decades were. There was more of a distinct style to that decade than you think. For example, those "triangle" swimsuits pictured here look nothing like 80s swimsuits to me, and I was born in the 70s so I know something about 80s swimsuits. Yes, they used neon colors back then too but that's as far as the similarity goes.

Wide leg jeans, stonewashed straight leg jeans, (much less obnoxious and tall) gladiator sandals, and we even recently came out with our own version of denim leggings (they’re called The Jeanie if you really wanna know the store I’m talking about). More and more women are coming in asking if we sell low rise jeans. I keep telling them to wait another year or so and they’ll be back!!!

As a curvier/chubby girl who can often feel insecure about her tummy, skater skirts can be a comfortable and cute option for me. Especially considering that my torso is longer than it should be in proportion to my legs, skater skirts fit me like mini skirts and are often the only skirts I can wear without having my ass out. This is one trend I wish people wouldn’t shit on as much because plus size people have a hard time finding comfortable things that fit, and yeah I wish I could find more pleated skirts that fit me right, but gd is it hard. The vanity sizing that continues today as well as the style of a school girl/pleated skirt can make finding one that fits as someone with wide hips and a slight tummy really difficult. Skater skirts by comparison are made with stretchier material and don’t have that annoying stitching at the top that’s made to make the top half of the skirt hug your hips. They’re just made more comfortable and are very easy to pair with the rest of your outfit because the silhouette is just a basic a-line circle skirt. Sometimes basic isn’t bad and you can make a cute outfit with one just fine. Sorry if this came off as very rant-y but I wanted to point out that certain trends get a lot of shit without people really considering that they may fit a certain body type better than this cute new trendy thing that’s wayyyyy better. Yeah my style looks a bit dated, but you try finding the current “new thing” when your proportions are bigger than what the fashion industry thinks is beautiful.

To be fair, EVERY decade is a bad decade for fashion. It just depends on what trends you focus on and how they're relevant to the present. All fashion from 10-15 years ago is going to look bad and outdated, no matter what point in time we are.

@@tamarleahh.2150 Even Edwardian elements came back into fashion: long skirts in the 70's, lacy frills in the 70's and 80's, mutton chop sleeves in the 80's. There was actually a lot of Edwardian inspired elements in 80's fashion, particularly with the silhouette and in formal wear.

Tldr: skater skirts ARE inspired from Edwardian times yup, not to mention the one and only Christian Dior bringing back Edwardian themes in his first Couture House collection. In fact, skater skirts are indirectly inspired by Edwardian times- The nipped waist trend was very popular throughout the Edwardian era. However, after the world wars, women's fashion turned boxy and utilitarian, with little figure showing at all. Need I remind you of figureless silhouettes of the 20s? Dior opened his own house after ww2, and was one of the first designers to bring back the curvy figure, nipped waist, and full skirt figure that we associate with the 50s. He was inspired by Edwardian silhouettes, which is when his mother grew up. He would often go to balls and masquerades as a child, where everyone would get dressed up, which awakened his love of fashion. And we see how he never forgot this style when he brought back that silhouette in the 40s. The skirts are more full, of course, than Edwardian day wear, but this is also because women didn't wear corsets in the 50s anymore, and the bigger the skirt looked, the smaller the waist. So, if Edwardian waists inspired poodle skirts, and poodle skirts inspired skater skirts, then skater skirts ARE inspired by Edwardian times. And I'm very glad Dior did bring it back- imagine if we were all still dressed in sequined potato sacks like in the 20s?!

@@sleepyy_kittyy Thank you for the infos. Interesting. Hihg waist would have come back at some spoint anyway. Thats for sure. The zeros were all about low waist in everything, but the tens brought waistline back. If jeans and skirts are going to go to low waist again.... I wont be in that boat for sure. 😅 Being a teen in the zeros gave too big dose if it for everyone. 😄 High waist is great for my grown up figure. Low waists work with long and sleek women like Gwyneth Paltrow.

Early 2000's fashion is now trendy amongst Gen Z. In 5 years early 2010's are going to make a comeback and certainly be hot again. This is why it's important to develop your own style and not buy into fads.

Everything becomes a trend eventually though. Even if you do have a unique style, the pieces you’re wearing probably are, or were trending at some point. I understand not wearing things just because they’re trendy but I don’t think anyone’s wardrobe is completely free of trends🤷🏾‍♀️

buy into trends if you like them, don't if you don't. also learn to sew so you can repair clothes, plus don't buy so much clothing (and when you do, try to buy ethically or second hand). the planet should come before trends

You can tell the girl who made this video is very much influenced by what's trendy. Anything that still is somewhat trendy now, she claims "isn't the worst" - (distressed jeans, circle skirts but claims pleated skirts are better). Anything that was distinctly from that period, even though she says she owned it and wore it she claims is hideous or ugly. Things can be off trend without being hideous IMO and you can mix and match trendy pieces from different periods and still look fashionable. She claims skinny jeans aren't flattering on anyone, including plus size and wide legged pants would look much better but there's a reason a lot of plus size or curvey people have stuck with their skinny jeans. They can definitely be flattering and don't always make you look "disproportionate" like the girl in the video claims. Proportions are just that- proportional and depend on your own figure as well as what you pair with it. It was an interesting video but you can easily spot how manipulated she is by what's considered fashionable by mainstream media.

This video will age poorly. Most of those trends weren't ugly, as there's nothing tacky or over-the-top about them. And you all wore and loved them only a few years back. Then, suddenly, because the fashion industry needs to make money, you all changed your entire wardrobe and started hating what you wore not that long ago. This hate of the 2010s fashion is so forced and fake. At least we didn't wear low-rise jeans with thongs sticking out as many did in 2020/21. Oh, and also the ugly trend of combining slippers with white socks, miniature (and pointless) sunglasses and purses, fanny packs, and jeans three sizes bigger - give it five years and we'll laugh at those 2020s trends.

@@humanbeing8400 Nothing was forced on us. None of my friends dressed the same. What's the point of online shopping when it exacerbates fast fashion, overconsumption, pollution, and spending too much time online choosing clothes. But even with, supposedly, more cheap variety being available today, you'll mostly see girls dressed in baggy pants and crop tops or simple t-shirts.

@@humanbeing8400 I'm not American, so I'm only familiar with Forever21. Anyways, I was purchasing from Inditex brands, which are still fast fashion but have slightly better labor and environmental practices. However, you can't really compare buying in physical stores and online. Shein and Temu have a rather ultra-fast fashion model and introduce new styles incredibly quickly, sometimes daily. Meanwhile, brands like Bershka and Pull&Bear were introducing new campaigns monthly (perhaps bi-weekly), so the production cycles were lower. Don't even get me started with availability. You can purchase online with a few clicks from your bed. Before, you'd have to get dressed and go to a physical location, which would be enough for many people to change their minds about going or do it only once in a few months. Fashion retailers are simply more aggressive today and promote a throwaway culture and overconsumption.
