Nostalgic Lisbon, I've visited many years ago and was surprised that some of the trams were actually made and used in the UK and sold second hand to the Lisbon public transport many years ago yet they're still running. Funny how the once wealthy people who built the houses are gone whilst the buildings look dilapidated yet the cars parked outside are all well kept and shiny.
@milomhoek3 жыл бұрын
Well there aren't many dilapidated
@dannyboy-vtc57412 жыл бұрын
Well it's not due to money but due to climate and need to close the public transport lines just for scaffolding for one facade, it's not worth it very often, and even gives some sort of a charm to it, it is the same like some areas of paris or venice, nothing to do with funds at all.

Cable cars. Thought only San Francisco had them. Very cool.
That's a steep tramway, but how is it driven? I see a slot between the tracks, is there a cable in it or a sort of rack system? As the trams have pantographs they must have drive motors unlike the San Francisco street cars which have a mechanism that grips on an ever moving cable trough a slot in the road.
@psirvent83 жыл бұрын
Each car has a drive motor and there's a cable under the center rail.
@Tom-Lahaye3 жыл бұрын
@@psirvent8 So do both complement each other or does the drive motor work on the cable via wheels? A bit like the Fell system?
@Luigi-uj5ml Жыл бұрын
The two carriages, identical and numbered 1 and 2, are made up of two command aisles, and a passenger lounge with two bench seats with their backs facing the windows, all at the same horizontal level - with a higher end (anterior in the sense of descending) and another closer to the ground, such as the Elevador da Glória, in what differs from many other funiculars. The entrances and exits of each carriage are made through two doors equipped with a pantographic gate and located at the end with the smallest difference in level in relation to the outside, on both sides of the active command post on the rise. The path is 188 m, with an average slope of 22.9%, on a double rail track embedded in the common street floor, with a gauge of 90 cm and a central slit for connecting the cable.
@samuellourenco1050 Жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a cable, and each car has its own traction. Both trams work together and balance each other. The system only allows movement if both drivers move the cars.

В Лисабоне, стоимость проезда на ней дорогая, даже на очень короткие промежутки, скорее всего некоторые туристы используют как аттракцион, другим проще пешком подняться.

Where does the traction friction come from? The central rail?
@antoniomanuelmanso81527 жыл бұрын
There is a wire cable connecting two cars which move in opposing directions. There is a crossing point in the centre where they pass each other This cable ensures the traction. In the past they were water operated.The descending car was filled with water so that it would be heavier than the ascending one. Drivers are brake operators , above all.

I have travelled on this funicular many times. And what always amazes me is the appalling state of the paintwork on the adjacent buildings. Surely the operatirs could arrange to allow access for , say, 72 consecutive hours once every ten years. Purely for redecorating.
@fredblonder78504 жыл бұрын
You state it is a funicular, though there appear to be pantographs powering it. There seems to be a slot between the rails, so is there an underground cable like a San Francisco Cable Car, in which case, why the pantographs?
@paullee55734 жыл бұрын
@@fredblonder7850 The term "funicular" is quite wide ranging. However, most such systems use what is basically a rack railway system. This particular one the cogs on board the cars engage in teeth set into the side of the running rails. Next time I am over there I will shoot a video clearly showing this.
@fredblonder78504 жыл бұрын
@@paullee5573 Thanks.
