I bought my 2004 brand new in the fall of 2003. Just sold it at the end of summer 2020 with 160k miles on it. Only ever replaced a wheel bearing, power lock actuator, and valve cover gasket, all done by myself. The one issue people should know about in many Toyotas of that era, is poor idling after the battery was disconnected or dead. The fix for this is to clean the inside of the throttle body. Just past the butterfly valve, clean that mesh with throttle body cleaner to get the gunk off. This measures the air going through the throttle body and it measures low when it gets dirty after 5 or more years. The computer tracks it getting dirty, but this tracking is stored in volatile memory. If power is lost, the memory on this tracking is lost and it starts off fresh again thinking the throttle body is brand new. After cleaning the throttle body, disconnect the battery for a while and then re-connect it to reset this memory. This makes it idle like it was brand new again. Took me a long time to figure this out so hopefully it helps someone.

@@kelleycadungug6428 This review is not fully true. I own a 2004 RAV4 model it does have the same problems of the 2001-2003 RAV4 faulty ECM which causes the vehicle the hesitate/stall and suddenly surge. The faulty ECM causes the transmission damage. The collective cost of replacing both the ECM and the transmission with the labour cost is over $10,000. This review is false and incorrect. The problems in the earlier models (2001-2003) is not gone in 2004 and later models exists. I suggest anyone planning on buying a 2004 RAV4 or later models of RAV4 check the NHTSA website at this link: www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2004/TOYOTA/RAV4 check for complaints on Engine or PowerTrain or Vehicle Speed control there are hundreds of complaints on the ECM/transmission problems. Besides this there is braking problems due to the faulty ECM surging the brakes have issues, Fuel efficiency is quite bad due to the faulty ECM burning more fuel. Also, with the introduction of the VVTi engine from 2004 RAV4 onwards this car burns more oil. Toyota released TSBs check on the NHTSA on the oil consumption issue. This review is false yes agree RAV4 is a comfortable SUV but that is were it ends it is an highly unsafe car when it suffers from hesitation and surging and the manufacturer does not admit and fix the issue. Do your reserarch before buying a used RAV4 from 2004 onwards check the NHTSA site for the model you are buying what owner complaints are.

Driving through 2 feet of water is no problem, not even unplowed roads in winter here in Big Bear lake area which is in the mountains above 7000 feet here in California. Great review, although there are differances in the RAV4 A2 line around the globe. I am stationed in Germany and drive a German spec'd 04/05 RAV4 4wd with a 5 speed manual. The Europeans had the 2.0i-16vvt-i engine through the entire life cycle of this car which was produced here from 2000-2006. The 2004-2006 had all the ugrades your model had as well as a slightly modified 2.0L engine bringing it up to 150hp. they also had the 3 door model here and a 2.0tdi common rail diesel version. The only 2wd had a 1.8vvti-16v 125hp engine, all others were 4wd. Great car.

I have a 2003 RAV4 2.0 vvti 4WD with 5 speed manual transmission. Bought as a used car it has only done 61k miles and so far it is running well. Starts first time, heater/air con works well, so does the stereo radio/5CD changer. I particularly like how the rear passenger seats are easily removable. Power steering is good, the steering wheel is ergonomic and the seats are comfortable. The interior is not stylish but is uncomplicated and of decent quality. My criticisms; fuel consumption is quite high (not terrible but mpg noticeably poor). The engine feels a bit under powered. The brakes could feel more positive (a rotor is slightly warped and I will look to upgrade the brakes). The headlights could be a bit brighter. The mechanism which holds the driver door open when parked on a tilt should be a bit stronger, I push the door open and it often closes again as I'm getting out which is annoying. If I press the 'lock' button on the key fob the car locks as expected, if I press the 'lock' button again by mistake it sets the car alarm off. This is very annoying! Glass of the rear windscreen has a patch of thickness variation, a 'wobble' imperfection which is not a desirable feature. The rear demist conductor lines have been scratched so it doesn't demist effectively (easy to repair though). The alloys and undercarriage have started showing some corrosion. So far my impression is this car is reliable and versatile but there are some things I would like to change.

My 2001 RAV4 has a 1.8L engine & has just hit 180,000 Km. Nothing has failed or broken. The rear seats can be removed , providing lots of carrying capacity. It has only about 125 hp (not really, that # is inflated, as is yours), but I don't think it's underpowered; it cruises @ 130 kph effortlessly. I average about 8 km/l using regular gas. New, I paid about $15,500. Included was mandatory insurance, CD, premium carpets & illuminated fender pole. BTW, I live in To-kyo (not To ki o). No handguns here! No home invasions.

I have a 2003 rav4 with 148,000 on it. The ecm failed but instead of replacing it for mucho bucks, I mailed it to a guy in Puerto Rico who specializes in refloating the solder on the board. It came back like brand new with a 3 year warranty and cost less than 100 bucks. Seems like the solder used on the board doesn't hold as well as the outlawed old acid core solder so it gets brittle and disconnects components on the board. I have replaced the valve cover gasket and a water pump. I had the factory catalytic converter gutted after failure and added a aftermarket catalytic converter ($100) downline and moved the sensors downline also. It has been 4 years and it still passes the rigid Texas emissions tests.

Great video. I recently bought an 03, 2.0 litre at 80k miles and that Toyota build quality is solid, its good for another 100k at least (with proper maintenance). The low loading point was pretty well the thing that sold it to me - my two dogs could get in and out better than any small estate or hatchback (only a smidgen higher than my old Pug 306 estate). The dogs have both sadly passed now, but I'm loathed to move on - it's a good little car, and by little, my 2dr '05 is smaller than the Mini Clubman and the Fiat 500L(arge). I have the European with the VVTi (bought 2nd hand now with 116k miles) and I can get 30-31mpg normall (28 if I'm very heavy footed, but 33, poss more, on a long A-road drive ie 50-60 mph) and apart from brake pads wearing a bit quicker than previous cars it's been pretty good. Clutch replaced before 90k miles IIRC and still on original exhaust (though rear joint has been cut out and sleeved to keep it going). One small problem with electronic throttle body (mine's got cruise) where the unit came apart and left me stranded - refurb fitted and all good. Always amazed how clean the engine oil stays.

I would like an economical car that can get me (slowly is fine) up bumpy mountains roads, but mostly be economical for long drives. Love that the 2nd-gen. has tape and CD. Can anyone tell me if you have a 2005rav4 all wheel drive if there is an option where you can only use two wheels? Or is it all wheel drive all the time?

My 04 awd sienna just hit 599,000 km it northern Canada. Many friends of mine had a Honda van that had transmission problems many times and some on 3rd van or has moves on beyond that. Only problem I have had was the run flat tires on all cars I have had.

I disagree. The 2.4L engine is a weakness. It is known for burning oil, thus shortening the life of your catalytic converter. The 2.0L is a weaker engine, but it is far more reliable.

u also forgot to mention the 2004 toyota rav4s burns oil, because, the pistons were cheaply made.

You bring up the ECM issue on the 01-03 ones, but you didn't mention the head bolt stripping issues that people have had with this 2.4 engine....

I heard those 2.4L engines burn oil like mad. the ECM issue for 2001-2003 can be solved by simply re-soldering about 8 resistors. sounds complicated to many people, but any electronics specialist can do it in 30 minutes for a hundred bucks.

A P interesting! your comment here alone just made me NOT second guess going to buy a 2002 Rav 4 L series here in a few hours. it is the L series and has 170K miles on it for $2,900 driven by an old lady.

I personally found the interior quality pretty low but what else can I say other than it’s a compact suv.

i heard the 2.0 engines were better than the later 2.4s

I'd argue that the 2000-2003 were better and more reliable cars than the 2004-2005

I have still have a 2004 Toyota RAV4-L 2.4 Litre engine with about 80K miles. Mine is even the same color blue. A year ago the power lock stopped working for the driver’s side door and hatch door. I have to put the key in the lock and turn it to lock all the doors. To fix it would be a little expensive. 🙁

Same exact problem with only drivers door not locking. Also, window on same door does not roll up all the way, it does eventually but after about 5 min trying. 2002 RAV4

Yes that a common problem for the drivers side. You need to replace door lock actuator
