2001: A Space Odyssey" is a monumental science-fiction movie directed by Stanley Kubrick, originally released in April 1968. This masterpiece film uses miniatures-based special effects and innovative filming techniques to tell a tranquil and mysterious story and create a highly realistic experience. The Space Station 5, which was a relay point between the Earth and the moon, played a major part in the story of the film, and made a huge impression on moviegoers due to its partially constructed state; the effect of rotation to generate artificial gravity was so well-done that it gave the film the illusion of being a documentary rather than a work of fiction. Space Station V was the largest orbital structure ever built as of 2001. It is a large, international, rotating wheel space station, used as a transfer point from Earth orbit to the moon and other planets. It featured an orbital hotel, run by Hilton Hotels; a Howard Johnson's restaurant; lounge areas; and picturephone booths.
The spinning of the station generates artificial gravity, equal to about that of the moon's gravity. This gave travelers from Earth a chance to acclimatize to the low gravity.
Space Station V has two docking bays on either side of the rotational axis of the station. By 1999, the station is still under construction. The first wheel has been completed, and a second wheel is being constructed.
Dr. Heywood Floyd visited Space Station V in 1999 on his way to Clavius Base.

Yes, you are correct about port and starboard, but in this case the term "port" in the instructions refers to the landing port fort the "Pan Am" Orion space shuttle.

No plans on using aftermarket masks, so easy to cut thin strips of Tamiya tape and make my own.
