Thank you, as always for making and posting this video and I hope that you are feeling better. This film is full of false missions to me! HF lies to the Russians on the way to the moon. He lies again in the conference. Does he even lie to his daughter! Why does Frank leave the main ship? To add some tension to a long slow movie. And what is the point of Dave trying to retrieve someone who is dead and he apparently cared little for! There are a lot of misdirected missions in this movie. 😉

Wow 👍 good point about the false missions ! I should do a whole video just about Heywood Floyd . And I agree Dave didn't seem to care much for Frank . The relationship between the astronauts is definitely odd and warrants a video of its' own

Very lucid analysis! And great editing - still by still - to back it up. Poor Gary Lockwood aka Frank Poole. I always thought HAL was responsible for his death - it stemmed from his (Hal's) jealousy and vindictiveness. Another Kubrick irony that HAL is the most human-acting character in the whole film!.

Hey thanks 👍 yeah I've always felt there was something odd about the deadpan way Kubrick has the astronauts acting . But I agree HAL is at least partially responsible here . I still want to do a video just about Dave and Frank .

Frank, Dave and HAL discussed options when HAL detected that the AE would fail. After running diagnostics, and finding nothing wrong with it, all three agree to put the unit back in "and let it fail". That's why Frank was out there. HAL couldn't lie and needed to protect the mission. So, HAL did away with Frank while also creating an opportunity to do away with Dave. The ape using a bone to crush a skull is the advancement of knowledge brought forward from the monolith.

In the Dawn of Man sequence when a bone is actually used to kill that is technically the First Murder - I actually have a video that discusses that aspect too called '2001 A Space Odyssey - Bible Code in the Dawn of Man Sequence' . And yes it does seem like HAL was being devious though I think it's because he was starting to develop paranoia just like the astronauts . But I like your comment , thank you . 👍

Ah, but Frank, ultimately, didn't actually die... In the book '3001', they find his body in space a thousand years later and revive him. They had no idea HAL was going to go crazy, though. HAL was supposed to play that video for them when they got to Jupiter.
@kubricktheory237
@kubricktheory237 2 ай бұрын
Interesting , I have not read the book 3001 but I'm not sure how Frank would survive 1000 years in space 🤔 and although I know the video was 'supposedly' going to play when they got to Jupiter orbit but I'm skeptical that they are even in Jupiter orbit ! But that's the subject of another video 🙃 but I like your comment Matthew ,thank you .

@kubricktheory237 It's a good book. Definitely give it a read if you'd like to see Frank have a happier ending. Its Aurthur C Clarke, the technology is (of course) pretty incredible. I like the skeptical ideas you pose, btw. 😁

@@kubricktheory237 You should read the books. The nonsense of them not being connected to the movies are hogwash.

3001 the novel has NO bearing on 2001 the film. Kubrick had nothing to do with them, and novels written after the fact cannot change the film. Enjoy the novels if you want, but they do not and cannot speak for the film or for Kubrick.

@@kborak Obviously 2001 the novel is "connected" to 2001 the film, but they are separate works that don't speak for the other. And 2010 and further novels absolutely cannot speak for 2001 the film as they don't have Kubrick's involvement. If you can't understand that, you're the one full of hogwash and nonsense.

You mention there is no explanation for Franks pod to leave the ship after the intermission. Actually, before the intermission HAL advises them to replace the unit and let it fail, and they decide that's what they'll do as they plot and have their lips read.
@kubricktheory237
@kubricktheory237 2 ай бұрын
@FrazerSmithsChannel perhaps I worded it wrong, I just meant that after the Intermission we literally don't get any dialogue as to what is now happening though your inference seems correct. I just thought it was odd 🙃

I blame the screenwriter. No, sorry. Hal...was Hal all the time. The two astronauts doesnt give us a clue of enemsty. They are only victims of greater power...through tech. The playful, gamer vision that Stanley's mind has is exceptional.

And I think there just isn't much to say to each other as the daily routine rolls by month after month. The extraordinary becoming routine is a minor theme in this film, as shown by Floyd's journey 18 months earlier. He's taking naps every chance he gets.

In the book the mission isn't even to the same planet! If you think a book about going to Saturn is the same as a movie about going to Jupiter, then you're the fool.
