This is arguably the only time these Braves lost an NLCS and it didn’t feel like a big upset.

Who would’ve guessed that the Kenny Rogers bases loaded walkoff walk from 1999 would be the Braves’ last NLCS win at Turner Field?

Like I said before in the Astros-Braves video, since 1998, Atlanta Braves fans grew bored of the Braves success, that they no longer even show up to the important games. And because the Turner Field area was horrendous, that many just prefer to watch it at home.

Through 2001, the Braves in the NLCS was seemingly an October rite. But like Cleveland, 2001 would mark the end of an era.

Well, only reason why they made the NLCS in 2001 was because the Astros are bigger chokers than Atlanta.

In just four seasons, the Arizona Diamondbacks go from Expansion to beating the mighty Atlanta Braves to reach the World Series. Unfortunately for them, in a normal year against the Yankees, everybody outside of New York would have been rooting for them. But given the tragic events of September 11th, it seems the Country wants the Yankees to win one for us.

Some October pitcher’s matchups don’t live up to the billing (Pedro/Clemens 99 ALCS). But game 1 between another pair of pitching legends (Mad Dog and Big Unit) did

Starting this NLCS between Atlanta and Arizona, I had Atlanta winning it. I liked their offense more. I also liked their closer more (Smoltz). And I thought Atlanta had an equal starting staff to Arizona’s. Maddux-Glavine-Burkett, Curt-Randy-Batista-Albie

If you like pitching greatness, this NLCS is for you. Schilling and Johnson for the D'backs. Maddux and Glavine for the Braves. In Game 1 at Bank One Ballpark, the Big Unit went opposite Maddux. Johnson had lost his last 7 postseason starts coming into this game. But don't remind the Braves of that when all was said and done. In going the distance, he retired 20 in a row at one point, allowed only three hits, and fanned 11, including Brian Jordan with two on and two out in the 9th, to seal the 2-0 D'backs win over Maddux and the Braves. Marcus Giles hit the first pitch of Game 2 over the wall for a home run. After the D'backs tied it in the 6th, Javy Lopez went opposite field in the 7th to put the Braves ahead to stay en route to an 8-1 win as Glavine allowed only 5 hits and one run in this 7 innings of work. At this point, the D'backs had to be concerned about their offense, as they have scored 13 runs total in 7 full playoff games Turner Field was the site for Game 3 with the series even at 1 game apiece. And Curt Schilling continued his mastery of the postseason, striking out 12 batters in his third straight complete game. Arizona won, 5-1, on Curt's 4-hitter. In Game 4, the bats woke up for the Snakes. Aided by three third inning errors, the D'backs scored four runs in the third and on it went. Gonzalez capped the scoring with a three-run shot in the 9th in an 11-4 route. En route to NLCS MVP, Craig Counsell went 3-for-6 with 4 RBIs. One more win was needed for Arizona to advance to the World Series. Tied at 1 in the 5th, Mark Grace had to leave the game to injury. No problem, as Erubiel Durazo--pinch-hitting for Grace--took Tom Glavine opposite field for a two-run blast. Randy Johnson fanned eight in his seven innings, including Brian Jordan with the bases loaded and two outs in the 7th to protect the 3-2 lead. Six outs from the bullpen later, the Diamondbacks won 3-2, and become the quickest expansion team to reach the World Series. Of the seven D'backs' playoff wins, Curt won three times and the Big Unit twice. And now, Schilling and Johnson are lined up to pitch the first two games of the World Series at Phoenix. Question is: will the Big Unit face the Yankees or the team he pitched for in 9 seasons?

Its crazy how Randy was always on the losing end in his postseason starts (asides from 1995 ALDS). The 2001 Arizona offense was weak. 1999 was their best offense. 2001 was just Luis Gonzalez. And Miguel Batista once again pitched really good. He has been underrated, even if he lost game 2.

The Arizona-St. Louis NLDS series was the real NL Championship Series - the Braves that year were basically garbage. If the Cardinals had won that Division Series they would have beaten the Braves to a pulp just like Arizona did.
