Return of V8 RWD sedans? *Crown Victoria has entered the chat* *Town Car has entered the chat* *Grand Marquis has entered the chat* The title would make more sense if you added that it was the return of rear wheel drive V8 sedans for Chrysler.

I actually kind of like the Super 8 now. I thought it was weird as hell in Midnight Club 3, but at least it was competitive. I do think the proportions are a bit off, but I'd have to learn Photoshop to fix that! I like long, low cars, so I'd have to give it a longer trunk, reprofile a few things, change the headlights, etc. . Personally, I find the green trim under the headlights especially odd. That would be a perfect place for a sequential turn signal... Anyway, the Mother of the Magnum deserves our respect. Huzzah!

I always thought it was cool in that as a concept, it showed a mashup of several ideas (both visual and technology based) rather than just being a more dedicated specific vehicle that was intended for launch the way most concept vehicles are. Looking at the cars to come soon after, it was clearly a success. Never understood why "rwd" has become a niche market thing tho. Literally the only advantage of having a car being front wheel drive oppose to rear wheel drive is the lack of a long driveshaft going from the front to back. It made sense for the pt cruiser (for example) because it allowed the final design to work with a low floor, etc, but in most cases it doesn't make sense for anything to be front driven. We're well past the days of crappy suspension and poor weight distribution (the actual reasons for older rwd cars being less than ideal in the winter), and now is the perfect time for someone to take back the segment.

It looks a bit like they went a little bit overboard with their "design language" in that it looks like the design committee all had fight about who could get their "special touch" included in the final design, then they decided to put everyone's in there. For example, the push-button transmission is *okay*, but to put the vents in it to make it look like the speaker you used to hang in your window at the drive-in movies is going too far. There were other examples, but this is the one that really stuck out to me. That and the trim on the side of the exterior were too much for me. I think the spartan interior is retro and futuristic at once. The flip-down screens in the back look like they were a bit chintzy, but I remember it is a concept/mockup so it's okay, because that steering wheel ALMOST makes the entire car better. I love the looks of that thing and with the wrap around windshield (and suicide doors) it makes me wish we would've gotten some cars with those design elements. All in all, i'm not sure I like the looks of it, but to deny the importance of that car for that brand, and what came after would be short-sighted. Great and informative video. Thank you.

There's another concept car Chrysler produced that could be considered as a a precursor to this story, if not a part of it. Around 2000, a Chrysler designer produced a design study that would be turned into a concept car dubbed "Nassau." (This car is also unrelated to a 2007 concept of the same name). The 2000 Nassau is rather remarkable because, just five years later, would go into production as the first-generation Chrysler 300 with very few changes. As far as I know, this concept car wasn't shown at any public auto shows. When comparing images of the 2000 Chrysler Nassau and the Dodge Super 8 concept, the designs do have a remarkably similar feel. Both designs have a high belt lines and tail lights that sweep up into the rear quarter panels, for example. It's on that last note I can't help but to wonder if the Super 8 wasn't possibly supposed to preview a Dodge version of the 300 that would've been more of a simple rebadge (similar to the relationship between the LH Dodge Intrepid and Chrysler Concorde the LX cars replaced). But yeah, if the creator of this channel somehow finds this comment, here's an idea: Google "2000 Chrysler Nassau concept" and maybe do a video on it sometime.

@MarspeedCars
@MarspeedCars 4 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a good move from a business standpoint in terms of trying to expand. I see it as they just acquired more resources for investing and developing technology (or using PSA’s resources). FCA is behind in all that stuff, no electric vehicles only a few hybrids like the Pacifica. And then they want to get back into Europe with Fiat so this helps for that. I don’t think Americans should be concerned with respect to Dodge other than that there will be some hybrid/EV dodges coming in the next gen I would think, especially after this. But god knows about Chrysler. My major concern is the culture/direction of the company. I didn’t like what happened with DaimlerChrysler so the companies have to work together for what’s best for both (sounds easy on paper but actually is really tough). I think it has the potential to be a strong move, more so for FCA but we’ll see how it plays out.

If you're gonna start with retro style inward canting A-pillars, respect Chrysler heritage and go with a more subtle Virgil Exner inspired design as opposed to the look of a boxy and angular late fifties Ford. Then instead of drawing attention to the front end with a monstrous gaping face, tone it down, smooth out the lines and place more emphasis flowing rearward with a tasteful homage to tail fins. And what's with the center mounted instrument cluster? Glad that fad ended quickly! This whole concept could have been executed in such a way as to be more of a tribute to the late fifties but instead they went with a post-apocalyptic assault vehicle. Opportunity squandered.

While I get that this is a concept and is inspired by 50s cars, mixing era styles just does not work. The wrap around windshield doesn't feel right on the car, and I have no idea what they thought when doing those teal trims.. Something feels off with the roof? I feel like there would not be much headroom in there, but I could be wrong. If the windshield was changed to be modern, and the roof wasn't so cramped-looking, it would actually look pretty good. In terms of the interior... Ho booy. I'm sorry but it's just flat out terrible in my eyes! the seats don't look comfortable and there's far too much of that weird 2000s grey matteish mettal. The dashboard does not look too functional because of how sloped it is, and that gauge cluster is kinda bad too. They should put it in front the driver's wheel and have that wide square speedo instead. I feel like if they changed the interior colours to not be all over the place, maybe a cream or a black. They should have gone for a 50s car interior rather than being inspired by the decor of the 50s such as jukeboxes and diners.
