Those 5.7's are notorious for eating roller lifter bearings. As for ZF's one needs to put a spin on external oil filter and keep it changed as they generate tons of used clutch material.

There is a known problem with Hemis from around then where if the owner runs anything heavier than the recommended 5w-20 oil it will starve the lifters for oil if idled excessively and they will wear down the cam lobes. Pretty textbook case you've got there. They've fixed that issue in the last few years, but you should still run 5w-20 oil like is recommended. The problem is that people think they know more than engineers and run what they THINK it needs. People tend to mistakenly think that thicker oil protects better, which it doesn't. Hemis run forever if you take care of them. I've seen tons of them well over 300k...

These chargers were backed by the 5 speed Mercedes 5G-Tronic originally built to handle the MB V12. These units could handle well over 600 lb-ft of torque so it was not over-stressed. It did require fluid and filter changes every 40-50K and had a tendency to leak from it's plug harness but that is usually an easy fix. I've owned a few of these that got close to or over 200K with no issues, still smooth. Likely a lot of charger owners drove like madmen and did 0 maintenance.

@steveg93024 жыл бұрын
@@emsicz check suspension, especially tie rod ends, links, ball joints and ESPECIALLY check the bushings. Bushings are cheap to buy and easy to replace yourself. Probably will have to replace radiator fans and oil pressure sensors (possibly other sensors too) Other than that just do regular oil changes at 5k intervals (although I do 3k) if you got the V8. Transmission fluid flush could be an option. Would probably be best if it has the Mercedes transmission in it. Other than that check for vacuum leaks and cracked hoses and leaks (oil and transmission), could be worth it to replace some gaskets. Spark plugs will need to be replaced soon too at that mileage. This HEMI is HOT and burns oil. It’s a tremendous engine but everything around it needs to be functioning well in order for it to not mess up so that you don’t end up getting worn lifters and misfires (all mostly due to lack of clean oil). Regular oil changes is the best measure to take to prevent it, but also checking for regular vacuum leaks and making sure that the hoses aren’t cracked or leaking. In other words, it’s made to last but only if you service this car correctly. I’ve seen HEMIs with 350k miles on it, and HEMIs that dropped valve covers at 50k. Differential fluid may also be something worth replacing. All in all I love these cars, but yes, the interiors are terrible.

@@steveg9302 I'm replacing oil every 3k miles. Sparkplugs replaced already. I literally dropped it for transmission and diff fluid change today, as I was made aware it's something I should've done already. The car is running hot, I can testify to that. When I put my hand out of the window, I can feel the heat coming from underneath the car. I'll see if the garage comes up with any other issues they may find. I found a good US-cars only service with good reputation, hopefully I'll be good. I've owned plenty all bought new, 1985 Omni 2.2, 1989 Daytona 2.5 turbo, 1995 Talon turbo tsi, 2002 Caravan 3.3, 2006 Grand Cheerokee Limited 5.7, 2015 Durango 3.6, all were great and well maintained I drove each vehicle to 130k-150k miles. Never any complaints and as a 19 year old kid I beat the Daytona & Talon constantly. I get bored after a few years, is why I change vehicles every 5 years or so. I think people who buy dodge simply do not take care of them. So, please ease up on Dodge. Not the best fit & quality but not the worst & they're affordable and worth the money. Love you anyway Scotty

mopar lifer here, was looking to switch out to something else as my 2016 Caravan is just a little on the wrong side of super boring and no longer fits my lifestyle needs (looking for a truck, which is why i'm on this video now). I agree actually, a lot. I remember my own Daytona had super high km's on it (sorry, Canadian) and while it had problems, it ranks as my favorite overall car i've ever owned. Had I had the money to maintain it the way it deserved, I might have been able to keep it for years longer than I did. This Caravan i've now owned for 4 years, im the original owner of it (rolled it off the show room floor) and I'm thankful to have had the money to keep it running through all it's problems (Turn signal module, coolant thermostat, rear brakes). Which to date, a super recent Cylinder 6 misfire has been the only engine related problem. I got that sucker fixed immediately and it's back to running totally fine. I've heard nothing but screaming praise for that 3.6L Pentastar that's under the hood, and noticed it's the default engine inside of the Ram 1500's. I think if I had any say in the matter I'd pull for a V8 Hemi model though. Either way, I agree, it's about taking care of it and it'll serve you well for a very long time. The W5A580 transmission was still in service up until a couple years ago - it's a great transmission. Not sure what he's on about. Chrysler only makes a few transmissions of their own design currently (40TES, 62TE, and 68RFE). The rest are ZF designs. He was also incorrect about Chargers only having ZF designed transmissions in them from 2020 on. They've been putting ZF 8HP70 8 speed autos in Hemi Chargers and Challengers for the past 5 years.
@hellkitty10144 жыл бұрын
@@jlrgaming8754 all true. And the ZFs have been in V6 LXs since 2013. The 850RFE is ZF-designed, but built by Chrysler. All in all, Chrysler really doesn't have transmission problems like many years ago. The W5A580 was stout enough to handle the 6.0L AMG V8(S65/SL65/CL65) for years without fail. That engine put out 738lb-ft of torque from the factory! Again, maintenance is key.

5.7 is probably the most reliable v8 on the market man. The hemi tick is always really annoying but never had engine problems with my 2014 rt awd charger had 164k miles before I just traded for a 2019. Use high quality oil after 75k miles like penz oil high mileage synthetic and service the other components when manufacture recommends service. The 5.7 is so bad 😂 there’s always problems with it
@DaveT08182 жыл бұрын
The 5.7 eagle version (gen 3 2009+) does have a history of lifter failure .. essentially the bearings on the lifter roller fail which causes the cam lobe damage.. proper maintenance will help reduce the potential but it's due to the overall design of the engine which reduces the oil distributed to the cam from engine rotation.. most high end replacement cam kits have lifters with much more robust bearings.. it's really not that hard to replace the cam if you are mechanically inclined.. beyond that the engine is pretty solid

@spakentruth4 жыл бұрын
Problem with Chrysler's is their QA. You could get a car that is all good and will go the distance. Or has numerous little problems off the assembly line and will be a money pit even when you first get it. And then chrysler won't cover you for a warranty. This is true in their "economy cars" their upper trim projects always get more attention. They're just decent but they cheap out on all the expensive parts a car needs to be solid and reliable.

They switched to the ZF 8 speed in 2015, and the NAG 5 speed transmission was from Mercedes when they owned Dodge and it is a great transmission I've got one in my 2003 RAM 2500 4x4 with almost 290,000 and I haven't even had 1 hiccup and that's putting Payloads of wet live oak weighing in at 6,000lbs. 1 full cord and even hauling my gooseneck dump trailer with 6 bundles of rough cut 2x8x14 lumber and on the lumber miles scales I weighed in at 36,110lbs. so I guess I'm one of the lucky one with an all around well built truck. And the way I see it if it can hold up under my normal use it will hold up under anyone's abuse! Plus I do have a few videos of it on my channel showcasing the wood and how I haul it with the stakes in the pockets.

Scotty clearly explained why Dodge's have issues. People abuse them. No one is "going to have fun" in a Toyota. It's like saying Jeep Wrangler is a trash vehicle because it breaks all the time. If you drive any vehicle like the typical Wrangler owner, it will break all the time too. Including the ones who take it to the mall and back. They still lift them and put huge tires on.
@lovethesmellofracefuelinth73744 жыл бұрын
@@KevinSmith-qi5yn Lol exactly, and anything breaks when you beat on it long enough. Especially without proper maintenance. There are more than one Hemi these days, and 5.7 is the least durable out of them. The high performance motors are in the SRTs and Scat packs, and starts with a 6.1. Which they stopped making in 2010, and is the Challenger that I have. Then is the 6.4 or 392, and the hellcats are powered by the supercharged 6.2 FYI

RebelCowboy5.7 L I never let it idle any longer than I have to. I’ve gathered that a lot of these failures are due to the bearings going bad in the roller part of the lifter. Some lifters even collapse, especially the mds lifters. The lifters are upgradable to solve this.

So, you say people beat the cars to death, then you say 'everything breaks on these cars'. I'm betting the owners hasn't kept up on the maintenance. You can't fault the car if the owner doesn't care about the car... and you can tell they don't. Who drives around with broken glass? A tire is probably low, therefor the light. I bet the light is doing it's job. What makes you think the previous owner ever changed the oil or did anything else? Anyone can beat to death any brand car.
