2001 Honda Insight EGR and plate clean

In this video I show you how to access the EGR and EGR plate in order to clean them. This is the most common clogged up area that needs to be cleaned on first gen insights. I also show how to remove and clean the egr valve.

Good grief that bottom left nut is just awful, I had to abort my EGR plate cleaning project because I couldn't get it loose and was worried I'd strip the nut. Gonna pick up some PB Blaster and replace it with a new nut once done. Already replaced the EGR valve and it fixed almost all the shuddering issues, now just some shuddering when accelerating from stop.

You may wish to edit this video, for the edification of others, to include torque specs and pattern to tighten down the manifold. I obviously couldn’t torque mine because I couldn’t get to the nuts underneath so did the best I could by feel and was careful to crisscross and gradually tighten each to equal pressure so as to uniformly apply pressure to gasket sobthere would be no leaks.

I used carb or throttle body cleaner to disolve away the carbon and you'll have to do less scraping away.

For a cleaning of the system, would it not be more thorough to also remove the EGR valve, then the manifold/plate, then spray carb cleaner into the rectangle where the valve mounts until the cleaner comes out the oval-shaped hole where the manifold mounts to the engine? That's the complete path where the carbon builds up, seems like cleaning that way would ensure the path is completely free and clear.

2003 Honda Odyssey V6 EGR valve works too, and is much cheaper. I hope this helps someone

Oh, and one more thing... there will be a sensor underneath that is very fragile! Don’t touch it or it will snap. I would suggest reinforcing it with some kind of bond for the future. This is an expensive part $150 more or less.

ils360 under the black intake manifold. You can see it through the crack. If you break it by touching it, you’ll wish you didn’t, you’ll have to buy oem. I bought an autozone part that didn’t work.

Doesn't take long at all the get it out. The longest part was getting it clean. Getting it out was only 10ish min

@@JRobling So, you just cleaned the head with carb cleaner soaked rags? I'll still run Inj cleaner for a couple tank fulls just to be sure. Have the entire EGR plate and valve gasket set. No codes or jerkiness, just want to restore the MPG. Thanks.
