Awesome video. Rebuild my 2003 rubicon 500 after researching your video. My petcock was riveted so i had to drill it out then screw it together.

which goes on first, the wave washer or the stop washer. is off cam

Sorry about that, the wavy washer is a spring to press the petcock into the housing and hold it there. It goes over the knob for the petcock and is behind the plate. It's a simple setup you will see when you remove.

Does this work if the petcock is continuously running fuel into the carb even when the petcock is off?

Only 1 problem with just changing those parts...the main filter in the petcock inside the the tank is usually rotted out and needs replacing also by the time the seals are worn. This oem filter runs about $20. Due to the design of the very short angled fuel line you cannot just simply put in a common in line filter either. Having no fuel filter lets lots of little crud in the carb which clogs the pilot jet, ect. So you end up buying a $15 petcock rebuild kit, a $20 petcock tank filter...now your at $35. OR you can just pay the $45 for a 100% brand new petcock and be done with it. It's all in choices...

Odd, 100,000+ dirt miles and the filter screen inside is fine. But you seem to know how the filter screen is in my tank...LOL

@@Meekerextreme 100k miles on a XR650R? That must be a record. Anyways all emotions aside the point is on the XR650 or most any and all dirtbikes, atvs with this type of petcock assembly by the time the rubber diaphram and x ring are worn 9 times out of 10 in the in tank petcock screen filter is often rotted or splitting as well and needs replacing now or very soon. Most other bikes you can ditch the screen and just run a in line fuel filter from petock to carb. HOWEVER the XR650R is a unique setup with a very short molded L bend fuel line that doesnt allow for a in line filter so running the in tank filter is a must if you want to avoid junk in your carb. I run a dirt bike/atv repair business so yes I do see this all the time.

@@gregp103 You point is?? Once again the xr650r does not have an in line filter and is extremely difficult to modify to do so without coming up with a jalopy looking creation.

@@thulsa5218 inline* My point is you're a terrible speller. I would never let someone who doesn't read books, magazines & manuals work on any of my bikes. Fortunately I'm an excellent and well read mechanic and don't need to hire illiterates. All emotion aside.

$45 for a petcock! That's ridiculous. I just bought a high-quality one for twenty bucks but you can buy them all day long for about $10.
