2001 Las Vegas 250cc Main (Jeremy McGrath Vs. Ricky Carmichael)

This is back when I used to hate RC, because I had been a McGrath fan for so long and I hated to see anybody dethrone him! Then once Jeremy hung it up, I moved over to the RC camp. To this very day I respect and admire RC. I've never seen anyone with such dedication and a supreme desire to DOMINATE.

Back then, I liked RC, too, but McGrath was the guy I always cheered for. I hated to see this happen to him in 2001 (losing 13 in a row), and his winless season in 2002 really docked my interest in the sport. When Jeremy hung it up so suddenly in 2003, I was ALMOST on my way out of the sport because I thought Ricky would go unchallenged AGAIN for title #3 (especially when Vuillemin threw his dream season down the toilet by skipping the Daytona race). Chad Reed saved me by challenging Ricky towards the end of the season; Reed gave me every reason to stay once he beat RC 6 times in a row to finish 2003. I admired RC's dominance as well, and still do to this day; now, Chad Reed is the ONLY reason I have left to follow this sport with RC retired as of August '07, and McGrath retired as of October '06. I still cheered for Reed in the Nationals, but I also cheered for Carmichael, too; same goes for Supercross. Today, the only races I can stand to watch are the ones that Chad Reed does well in.

@@hamonrye9823 They did represent Kawasaki will -- at least RC and Stewart. I thought Ricky looked better on Kawasaki. You can't forget Villopoto though since he rode for Kawasaki his whole career from '05-'14.

@@hamonrye9823 Villopoto? I wouldn't say he retired super early. I think he was just totally over it after '13 or '14, which likely explains why he competed in Europe for the 2015 season, but retired after just 4 events.

IMO, what we saw of RC in 2001 was the beginning of one of the most successful sports careers in the history----of not just MX,---but of all sport in the world. He retired with over 400 races under his belt, and a bout a 83% "win" average, and doubled the number of championship wins for a MX career at 15. I have only found one other athlete, in any sport in the world, who had a better win average. That guy was some bicycle racer in Europe, with like 400 wins out of 410 races (numbers close,---but just off the top of my head from memory),--who later was a co-founder of Indian Motorcycles in the USA. I think we tend to underestimate the depth of RC's greatness in the sport of MX/SX. There was none greater. RC's last pro ride was the 2007 MX of nations at Buds Creek, and there was no way I was not going to be there live, and watch RC retire---a winner, (another sure sign of greatness).

That is right -- you could say his only hiccup was being forced to bypass the 2004 Supercross season due to a knee injury.

I would say I did enjoy the 2-strokes for as long as they lasted, but everyone going to 450cc 4-strokes for 2006 was something I think nobody (myself included) would have predicted would happen. On another note: I do think Ricky was just on another level to possibly have you say that "Kawasaki is the best bike." McGrath represented Yamaha and Honda well, but I think he was just caught off-guard by Ricky's intensity. Ricky changed the sport by making everybody train at all hours of the day to compete with him. I did also think that the recently-retired (at the time) Greg Albertyn and Jeff Emig must've had a crystal ball to know Ricky would do something like this for 2001.

Nowadays they prefer the four strokes because you get more usable throttle I rode Moto from 1976 to 1988 if you had a four stroke you had a trailbike

They were definitely the best races, but I also enjoyed the Reed/Carmichael battles; I always cheered on Chad Reed once McGrath retired so suddenly before the 2003 season began.

Watched and read alot about both RC4 and Showtime McGrath. Generally the consensus on McGrath was he was the most naturally talented rider that trainers and team members also other riders/competitors have ever worked with just a natural on a bike. As for RC4 he changed the game. He had alot of natural talent also but his work and athletic training is what took him to the top. He never got fatigued as the race went on. And now all racers have a diet and workout trainer as well. RC4 changed the race game forever. RC4 also retired early 30 like his riding hero McGrath. Definitely a young man's hustle. If 2020-2021 season goes be looking for my new favorite rider Ken Roczen to make a run for the championship. After his injuries would love to see him make one more run to the top before hanging up his helmet. GO Roczen 🚀🚀🚀⚡⚡🤟

And Supercross was really McGrath's first love. Can't forget that. RC certainly busted his butt in all the years he dominated. Retiring at 27 is still pretty young, but it's understanding when you think about all that RC accomplished in his 10 years. He even said he wanted to go out on top, and he did. I'm hoping Marvin Musquin makes a run for the title in '21. Roczen certainly deserves a title for Honda -- especially when Honda hasn't had a Supercross title since RC in 2003.

Nice. I like Roczen as well, but Marvin Musquin is my new favorite because of what he did to Tomac at Foxboro 2018. Lucky you that you started on a CR80. I started in '96 on a Yamaha PW80 before going to a KX60 in '98, then an RM80 in '01 or '02, and then I got on a CR125 in '03 before my 250F in '06.

EPA killed the 2 stroke. Evinrude went bankrupt this spring 2020 trying to meet emission standards. They put much effort into 2 stroke technology and just couldn’t make something profitable anymore.

I don't think Jeremy slowed down on purpose. It may not look like it, but Jeremy made a mistake and got a little too far forward in his body position. Jeremy tried his hardest, but this track was hard to pass on unless somebody blew it. I hated seeing Jeremy lose this race as much because that meant RC tied his 1996 record of 13 in a row. Yes these were the good days indeed. Unfortunately, McGrath was not as winning as often as I'm sure he'd like to have. I was getting pretty tired of RC winning myself, but Chad Reed saved me from leaving the sport in '03. You're welcome for the post. Hope you'll see other races I've posted. I have a few going back to 1997, the first year I started following the sport.

Wow nice dude no way! 97? Let’s see so I got my first 89 yz125 back in 98 and that started my obsession of the sport then. When did the first couple Terrafirma’s come out again? That’s was definitely the golden era IMO. Yeah I’ll check out your other vids though also. So after I commented here I watched an interview with MC and he was talking about that time, not specifically the one I brought up, but the time in general and he did mention what you just said too. He wasn’t winning as much as he wanted to and he was just as frustrated as we were about it believe it or not...imagine that 🙄hahaa. Like I was the only one right? I started riding about the same time. I believe the Terrafirmas came out about '98 or '97. Yeah, I was probably just as mad as McGrath was that he wasn't winning as often as he'd like to after Carmichael came calling. It's hard to believe that all McGrath really did was blow one triple jump at Anaheim 3 2001 and that was all she wrote for the Supercross season. Seeing McGrath finish between 4th and 8th in 2002, and not better than a 3rd place (3 times) was equally frustrating. Yeah McGrath led some races in '02, but the fact he wouldn't change his lines or wait until he goofed up and gave up the lead was also just as bad. Hope you might throw a comment on some of the past vids I've posted, and maybe you'd be in the same boat as me when I say that Chad Reed really saved me from leaving the sport after McGrath retired so suddenly.

Ricky was one of my immediate favorites, but I wasn't very fond of him stopping the McGrath era so suddenly. Eventually, I warmed up to Ricky dominating Supercross, but I still rooted for Chad Reed through and through after McGrath retired so suddenly.

Showtime Mcgrath was used to throwing down 2-3 faster laps than anyone then just riding at a fast but comfortable pace for him. Ricky carmichael's work ethic and stamina and working out and cardio changed the race game from about this point on you couldn't do what McGrath had been doing holding a fast but steady pace and be tired wore out at the end of the race. Carmichael dident get fatigue if anything he kept getting better lines and continued to get faster as the race went on. Rc got to the top by treating racing like he was a pure athlete just like football or boxing or basketball his cardio and working out to not get gassed out in a race was the game changer. I'll bet not one rider who has run at the top spots since this era here has just relied on speed/talent you had to be in great shape as well to compete. I was just a kid but I hated seeing McGrath get dethroned by anyone. He was the coolest rider on the planet. Racing dirt bikes ain't for the faint of heart McGrath was out of his prime by 30 years old still so young. But as much as I hated RC4 for retiring McGrath I grew up in my teens watching RC4 Become the greatest 🐐 of all time. These races now are both painful and a joy to watch showtime MC pass the torch to a young hungry Ricky Carmichael. Probably bias to this era but I think it might be the best of any era of racing. + Loved almost everyone was on 2strokes. This modern 4stroke era is faster and fun to watch also but loved the sound of a pack of 2strokes ripping.

To see McGrath just beaten week after week after week after Anaheim 2 2001 was incredibly frustrating to see. RC certainly did change the sport with his work ethic, which made you think you had to train at all hours of the day just to beat him. I admit after RC dominated in 2002 winning 11 races and Jeremy McGrath won 0 races, then announced his retirement so suddenly, I was considering leaving the sport until Chad Reed challenged RC down the stretch of Supercross 2003. RC even says he lost sleep over Reed, too. Chad Reed became my savior to this day. I love the sound of a 2-stroke just as much as everyone else, but I like this era as well of 4-strokes. I don't think anyone else would've guessed we'd go to all 4-strokes by 2006 in Supercross AND Motocross.

He did have some bad breaks en route to some titles and a couple of injuries wrecked a couple of title runs, but Chad was there week in week out.

Indeed. Chad even said that retirement scared him until this year when he said he was ready to walk away after 2020. Reed's first full year in Supercross was 2002 in the 125 East. He's been in the premier class since 2003. I was very fortunate to watch the Reed/Stewart rivalry, yet I was disappointed Reed didn't win most of those, but what really stuck out at me was that when his career was on the chopping block after 2010, Reed did something about it and privateered things until Team Honda let him pick whatever he liked in '11. When Stewart's career was on the chopping block, what did he do -- nothing!! You're welcome for the posts. Hope you see some of what I have from 1997-2011. Some of my races after 2010 got taken down by Feld, but some were spared; most of my races from 2006 got pulled as well for some strange reason, too.

Maybe, but when RC was on Suzuki, he started to earn stats that only fledgling amateurs would kill to have -- same goes for when he was on Kawasaki and Honda like his perfect 125cc East SX season in 1998 for Pro Circuit Kawasaki, and 2 perfect 250cc MX seasons in 2002 (on a CR250R) and 2004 (on a CRF450R) for Honda.

Carmichael was just as dominant on the Suzuki as he was on the Kawi, statistically he was better on the Suzuki. He had 2 perfect seasons on the Honda. That's when he was truly untouchable

I think LaRocco was content with the 250 2-stroke he'd ridden since the 500cc class went away after '93. Then again, Mike did jump on the CRF450R at Millville after Ryan Hughes got hurt before Washougal and elected not to run the rest of the 2001 Motocross season. Sebastien Tortelli didn't want to ride the 450 supposedly, and Ezra Lusk had busted some ribs before this race and didn't ride that night in Vegas.

I didn't like it when Ricky switched to Honda. He was known as a Kawasaki guy. He's been on the green bikes since his earliest years. I think it would have been better if he had done a Jeff Ward. From the beginning to the end of his pro career, he stayed with Kawasaki.

I didn't care too much for Ricky's change to Honda, but he showed the switch to Honda was a good one in sweeping the MX Nationals twice in '02 and '04 and 18 wins total in SX (11 in '02, 7 in '03).

I stopped going to supercross because of Emig and Langston and also the attitudes of everyone acting like they all ride for the Metal Mulisha. Emig and Langston were both total Dbags last time I went and said screw this I don't need to spend my money on this.

It was the U.S. offroad championship series that had bikes, quads, buggies and trucks and monster trucks for halftime. I always make sure I take to young kids and tell them they can do it if they stick with it. Thanks for posting the video.

I only thought about the life as a Pro Motocrosser but I'd miss my home state of Hawaii too much. Cool to hear you raced twice in Bank One Ballpark. Well, you can't really fault Ricky for wanting to go out on top -- retiring after 2007. I think if Ricky didn't injure his knee before the 2004 Supercross season began, he may very well have gotten close to McGrath's 72 wins, but Jeremy averaged 10 wins in all 7 of his championship seasons, which is really hard to do. As it is, Ricky ended up with 48 career wins (60 if you count his 12 125cc wins from '97-'98).

I don't know if riding a different brand would've made a difference for McGrath in 2001; he did win 2 races on the Yamaha. My guess was that Ricky just came out with a new training program that MC wasn't ready for or even expecting; Jeremy could've won this title or even compete with Ricky in a lot of the races that season, but RC just brought that training program that made people think they had to train at all hours of the day to compete with him. Lusk showed something at Dallas before a crash ruined his chances.

CRF NIGHTMARE I guess the reason why 2-strokes are no more is because of the extra power advantage and all the bite they get on the tracks; it wasn't long ago we only saw 1 or 2 thumpers out there (Doug Henry, Jimmy Button, etc.) and they were about the same in terms of competitiveness; I think a main reason why 4-strokes dominate the sport is what happened in late 2005 when James Stewart got on a 4-stroke Kawasaki himself after riding the 250 2-stroke in Motocross over the summer against 38 other 4-strokes and not having the best of performances, everyone else wanted to compete with him, so Reed, Carmichael, Fonseca, Byrne, and everyone else jumped on the thumpers.

Oh he definitely left nothing on the track that night. I was definitely discouraged that it still didn't result in a win that night in Vegas for Jeremy. Unfortunately, the writing then was on the wall when McGrath was injured coming into 2002 and couldn't finish better than 3rd (3 times). It was also hard to believe that later on at Southwick, Carmichael said he'd wanted to stick around for 4 or 5 more years, too.

Ricky then added in a red-zone speed with a question of "How hard will YOU work for it?" and McGrath just wasn't ready for that. 2002 had to be the worst season ever because McGrath never won a race and couldn't finish higher than 3rd.

Yeah. I think Jeremy overtrained and was suffering from arm pump all the time. Another thing I believe is it was mental. He had won seven titles. He wasn't getting any younger. I don't think McGrath overtrained -- what I heard was that Jeremy was suffering from a back injury before the season even began, which was the culprit of his frequent arm pump. I really think Jeremy could've won a race in 2002, but he kept making mistakes he shouldn't have to me. I know McGrath wanted to win a race in '02, but I think his pre-season injury wrecked his run at Supercross title #8. The fact that McGrath DIDN'T win a race in '02 was bad enough, especially from races he led and gave up the lead due to mistakes of his own.

I didn't know that he hurt his back but let's face it, he was getting on in years at that time and Ricky had hit his prime. Ricky is a great rider and it's a joy to watch him but the main reason he's not my favorite is because he dethroned Jeremy. How shallow is that? I can't help it. When Jeremy moved to Yamaha, I was very happy and Ricky was the guy to end McGrath's reign.

That's also possible because McGrath turned 30 before the 2002 season began, but he said his back injury (which was actually in a curve between his shoulder blades) didn't give him good blood supply (which he said in the "Bar to Bar 2002" video). I think conditioning cost McGrath the wins at Phoenix and Anaheim 3, but Minneapolis was a real possibility if McGrath didn't spin out on lap 10, and Dallas might've been the one had McGrath changed his line in a whoop section before the first triple jump, but didn't. Personally, I liked Carmichael myself, but I didn't like the fact that he ended McGrath's era of domination. The fact that he went virtually unchallenged for almost 2 straight seasons really docked my interest in the sport, and Jeremy's sudden retirement in 2003 was ALMOST the last straw for me. That was when Chad Reed showed me he could compete with Ricky; today, Reed is the ONLY reason I have left to follow Supercross w/ RC and McGrath retired, and James Stewart in "who knows where" (much to my delight).

Nope -- it was 2001. Heath Voss made the Supercross debut on the CRF450 after Tortelli didn't want to ride it, and Ezra Lusk crashed earlier that week and busted some ribs to a point where he couldn't even race; Ryan Hughes rode the 450cc bike during the Nationals, but his season was cut short before Washougal due to a concussion. He tried to come back for the final round at Steel City in prep for the 2001 MX des Nations, but he crashed and suffered yet another concussion... which led to him withdrawing from the team and to be replaced by Kevin Windham; ironically, Travis Pastrana was also invited to the MXDN team for 2001, but he pulled out, too due to too many crashes and whacking his head (once at Unadilla, and again at Washougal).

When Hughes rode the new Honda 450 outdoors in '01 after 2 years in Europe, I thought it was a good way to get more appeal. Carmichael... that's what happened. When Chaparral went out of business after 2000, that might've effected Jeremy a little bit. I think Jeremy still came into 2001 the same Jeremy McGrath we got to know through the years, but I guess Carmichael's training program caught him off guard in a way. 2001 was just Carmichael's year. I think that all started at Anaheim 3 when Carmichael ran McGrath down and passed him with only 2 laps to go... all because McGrath jumped too far into the face of a triple and couldn't jump it. The fact that Ricky went practically unchallenged until Dallas arguably when Ezra Lusk showed some backbone was just as bad as watching Ricky run away with the next 10-11 races. When Carmichael crashed in practice at Salt Lake City, I was HOPING Dr. Bodnar would pull Carmichael from his heat race because Ricky crashed so hard and gave himself a whopping headache and a possible concussion. Bodnar didn't do it, and Carmichael fought through the pack after a 6th or 7th place start to shut everyone up with his 12th straight win. It's hard to believe that Salt Lake City and this race (Vegas) were the only real races where Carmichael was challenged all race long. As much as it pained me to see McGrath not beat Carmichael here like he did at Anaheim 2, it is clear to see that Jeremy was clearly faster than Carmichael that night.

I was a huge fan of Jeremy McGrath, but I also liked Ricky as long as Jeremy kept winning. 1997 was my first year following the sport; I was only 9 at the time; my first race I watched was probably Seattle, but Orlando '97 was when I became a full fan. 1998 was my first full year following the sport, and MC and RC became two of my immediate heroes along with David Vuillemin and a bunch of others like Fonseca, Huffman, Lusk, JSR, etc. I totally loved seeing Ricky on that 125 going through that perfect 125 East season in '98 after a crash-filled rookie season.

The idea that there could be a privateer now with the 4strokes being so expensive to buy,working on, and rebuild is not possible that's why we don't see privateers now. 4stroke was just BS to make more money for the manufacturer. Sure they're faster than they have ever been but put 20+ years of research and technology into 2stroke bikes and you'll get a faster bike than when they quit advancing

@@caseyanderson7600 I have to admit that I was 13 when the 250Fs were introduced, but I was only 10 when Henry rode that YZ400 in 1998 full-time. 2-strokes certainly give that old-school feeling, and repairing them certainly doesn't leave as big a hole in your wallet as a 4-stroke generally does. I rode all 2-strokes until 2006 when my dad got me a Honda 250F because I was pretty serious about getting a 4-stroke myself.

The tracks back then were to dry and hard making it slippery and dangerous. The tracks now are to soft and you have nothing but a rut race. They need to mix the soil types to find middle ground. Well the 4-strokes were in their infancy; Tim Ferry was also on a Yamaha 426F FTR. I just wish McGrath won this race and prevented Ricky from tying his 1996 record of 13 straight wins.

Unbeknownst to the McGrath callk sucking commentators..it was at this moment..Carmichael never looked back and went on to win 15 championships..more then any other rider..ever in history.. .

It can't be denied what RC did, but you can't deny that how he did it was incredibly unexpected -- especially to Jeremy McGrath himself. McGrath cemented his status as one of the GOATs, as did Ricky Carmichael. I got nothing BUT respect for both gentlemen. McGrath was the whole reason I got into this sport in 1997. Chad Reed is the guy who kept me a fan after he challenged RC down the stretch of 2003 Supercross.
