2001 Yamaha Big Bear Rope Pull

The rope pull works fine. But it just spins freely inside and I don't know how it connects to the dogs.

As said there is whats called a pawl under the disc and works on an inertia system, when the rope us pulled the pawl shoots out and engages in the cutouts in the cup on the engine and because it only engages one way when the rope is pulled, when the engine starts it just returns under the disc as its spring operated. A little penetrating oil should free it, and if you pull hard on the rope before reinstalling it you should see the pawl engage and disengage when you let the rope go back in 👍

My friend, look underneath the silver plate , there is a piece of metal that will stick ot when u pull the rope. Under that piece of metal there is a spring that one of the ends should be on the side of that piece of metal. The function of that is that when u pull the rope, it comes out by being pushed by another spring under that plate, then it engages with the piece in the crankcase to start the engine. If the springs r not in place, this piece of metal won't come out. U can take this plate off, slowly, by removing the nut, while holding the plastic piece, to see what happened with the springs. Make sure u see how u take this off. I didn't give u the name of the parts so u won't be confuse. I used simple words to help u figure it out. Please let me know if u have a question. I just rebuilt one of those pull rope assambly a couple of days ago. I hope it helps.

Mine keeps trying to lock up as you pull it then it won’t want to go back down

The palls on the pull start shiv are stuck in and won't move out to grab the flywheel pulley just clean and oil it up LoL !!

Ronald Taillon It doesn't easily get stuck, one of the spring or both that make it work, r not in place.

You are missing the drive plate spring. It’s a little horse shoe looking spring that pops out the drive leg.

i work on atvs and the dogs are under the sliver disk where your rope is so spray some wd40 on it to free it up. if that doesn't work you need to take it apart and find out what is jamming it up. mine did the same thing but it was on a gokart motor, it has the same kind of pull start. get back to me when you take it apart or fix it. :) i do have a four wheeler like yours its a 95 yamaha yfm350er moto4 and i researching if i can put a pull start on i case my battery goes dead. thats how i found your video. :)

It should have a carburetor so you can put a pull start on it

if you look very close on pull cord .. you can see there is a piece missing its call a claws .. that is to grab on flywheel that why there is nothing to grab
