2002 Ford F150 Pickup Turn Signal Flashers Relay Replacement

How to replace the turn signal / flashers relay in a 2002 Ford F150 Pickup. Left turn signal and flashers were not working correctly. This video will show and tell you what you need to know and the steps in replacing the relay. I provided some tips. I'm not an expert, I just couldn't find a video that showed how to do this step by step so I make one. It's very amateur but I hope it helps.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. After watching it, I read through all the comments, then I got to work on my 2000 F-150. True story: I came in from the PASSENGER side. Pushed the seat all the way back and lay down on the floor of the cab so I could see the relay box. Carefully cut away the black tape holding the wiring harness to the box and pushed the wires back away from the box cover. Pried up the box cover and pulled both relays. Took out the old flasher relay and put in the new one, which I got at O'Reilly's for ~$20, and just like that I once again had working hazard lights and turn signals. Did not remove ANY cowlings or ANY bolts. It can be done....

This video was an IMMENSE help preparing me for replacing the relay in my 2002 Ford F150. Tools needed and size of sockets and action sequences (cowling removal, loosening of bolts, location of relay box) spot on! I must've lucked out a bit since the relay box was not hidden to the extent the gentleman's was in the video. I was able to easily locate and with a bit of manipulation remove and replace the blue relay switch. Be sure to take note of plug orientation as this video points out! Although I replaced with relative ease had I not been paying attention to plug orientation I would have had a MUCH harder time trying to figure it out. Thank you Westbasin for saving me loads of time.

I'm the same as Johnathan Boxdorfer. With your video I was able to locate the relay and didn't have to take the dash panels off. There was what looked like factory tape around the black encasement toward the back. I took this off and removed the cap and changed the relay. Relay was tough coming out, but got a small screwdriver under it and gently pried to a point where I could lift it out. The cap snapped back in fine. I did not retape it. Thanks again. 2003 F150

Thank you West basin You have save another from the frustrations of the FTFC - "First Time fix it Crew" I did use the picture of the arrows to remove these two screws and the bracket holding the flashers came out to the left for easier access to the housing and to pull out the old defective flasher. Also I use the long screw driver to prop open the right side of the lower panel instead of fully removing it leaving that left end inside the rubber door jam. Which after the replacement of the flasher and replacing the flasher housing bracket screws just push back into place and made it very easy to replace all the panel screws. Thank you very much for the video - I also went to NAPA who had the part for 17.00. Much cheaper then the online shops. GREAT JOB!!

I have a 2001 F150 XLT. My problem was the turn signals and emergency flashers would flash for a short time and then stop. Your video worked perfectly! One note for my 2001 is that there is an additional bolt above the emergency brake handle. You mentioned that 2 bolts hold the relay bracket in place. Unbolting the bracket made it very easy to pull and insert the relay. In fact, if I didn't do that, it would have been impossible to unclip the cover as there was tape wrapped around the relay cover. The whole job took about 30 minutes and saved about $250. FYI the cost of the relay was $15...

Thank you Sir for posting this! With your video I was able to get this done in under an hour and that was with my nosy neighbor taking about 15 minutes of my time in between. Your video was very informative and, that tight spot is no joke and my big hands barely fit in there. The hardest part was pulling them putting them back in was easier by getting a leveraged to pull them out was almost impossible I'm glad that I train for grip strength! thanks for the video, I removed the two screws on the bracket to drop the relays, that helped. my aftermarket relay was taller than O.E.M so I could not re-use the dust cover. no big deal. now my blinker works again. my mechanic wanted $300 plus to do this. it took me about an hour and the relay was $12.00 on Amazon.

thank so much for the video. the 2 red arrows showing the bolt/ screws that hold the box in really helped. i removed the 2 bolt Screws and was able to pull the box out to pull just the blue one out. peace of cake went back to gather just as easy. thanks again for the great video

I converted LEDs on my 2003 F150 truck and had to replace the turn signal relay, which the video helped give me what I needed to do the task. Although there were some details left out that need to be aware of. Actually, the sockets are to be metric not inches and there are four bolts, not three in the front panel, and the bottom two bolts on the bracket need to come completely out that sets the frame. also as noted when you get to the two relays yes take the two bolts out of the front and it pulls out easily to take the cover off and pull the signal relay without removing the other one.

I have a 97' and want to thank you for the basic of reaching flasher. On ford expy 97' it much easier to reach and see by looking under steering wheel/dash area. Depress sides of cap and pull up on flasher with one hand and pull down relay holder with other. Lastly, be mindful of orientation of flasher/relay when removed.

Just used this video to help me change my turn signal relay after changing all the light and the multifunction switch. This was very helpful and I will say that like many comments I have read it is much easier to take the whole panel off (including taking off the brake line and the hood) than to struggle with the limited space, especially if it’s the first time doing it. At the end of the video you mentioned removing two bolts holding in the black flasher box. While it was not done in the video I did do that and it makes the removal and installation of the flashers a whole lot easier as you can pull out the black flasher box. Otherwise the video was excellent and saved me as I would not have figured this out without the video.

Got some advice for 2000 F150 with turn signal problem. A common problem with these cheap made trucks is that the plug to the multi-switch that controls the turn signals have a number of wires (there is a couple of plugs to the multi switch. the one for signals is the smaller plug ) One or more of these wires will work loose from the plug as tilting the steering could stretch them out of connection. You may be able to push the steering up to full tilt and the wires will make connection for signals, to show that is the problem. Remove the steering cover including removing the key cylinder (easy just push in the little round hole under it with a small punch and pull it out). Then take off the multi-switch and remove the plugs (not much room to work on them). I pushed all the wires deep into he plug and tied them tightly together with a small tie wrap. Then I mixed 5 minute epoxy and glued the wires into the plug so they won't work out again. Let it dry several hours and reinstall. It worked great for me. Now a common problem with the shifter not going into park is caused by two small bolts that connect the shifter shaft to the shift cable. Those bolts work loose over time. They are located under the dash and up on the steering column. They are brass looking screws with torx heads. One of mine had fallen all the way out. I used lock tight and retightened them and it solved the problem. Now a problem with the back door not opening is the cheap plastic retainers that break. Take off the panel and window.You can pull the cable tight and use tie wraps to tie it down to the door using existing holes. Then it will open the door.

I have a 2000 F150. I replaced mine in 5 minutes without removing any panels. I laid flat on my back under the steering wheel, put my right arm around the brake pedal, removed the plastic dust cover, then pulled the relay out. I did not need to remove the other relay next to the flasher relay. Odd thing is, the replacement was defective and did not work. I put the original one back in and it worked! It may only work for a short while, but it's working. I will prolly get another one and have it on hand in case it goes out again. I have read that these relays sometimes work intermittingly and eventually fail altogether. Don't waste your time removing all those panels. (I did return the defect to the local O'reilly's, but they didn't have another)

All Bolts on a Ford are Metric and the Black Relay in front of the Blue turn signal is the Blower Motor Relay for heat and ac.

This video is helpful and will get the job done. However, you definitely do not need to remove the dash panels. Once I located the proper relay box, I was able to swap the old for new in less than 5 minutes. No tools required.

Thanks for this video. I remember the days you could just look under the dash and the flasher was usually right there. Nope. Ford has to make this difficult. And what's with the "relay box 4" thing? Why the need for the extra cover over both of the relays? Why not just turn them over so they could be easily accessed? Oh well. It's done. I would like to add that it did make it easier to remove the lower dash panel. With that removed, you really can't access it topside. You have to crawl under the dash. I removed the wire bundle attached to the bracket the relays are mounted to, then pushed the bracket up, and pulled it towards the drivers side. THAT made it easy. It bent back into place and I reattached the wire bundle (it's got a push in clip), put the cover back on, and I was done.

Good job man, quite helpful!! Small differences my '03...t total of 6 bolts to remove, 2 at the bottom bracket and 4 in the plastic trim. Also, the relay cover on mine had a wrap of tape going all the way around it on the inside part you cannot see!!! Took me forever to figure out why I couldn't get the cover off lol!!

Tilt your steering wheel all the way up by doing that the wire on your multi function switch will go back in place , the problem is that the pin holding the wire pin breaks and the wire comes out of place, to fix it you have two choices replace the connector that’s about $20 or you can just zip tie the lose wire to another wire, i just recommend replacing the connector

Thanks for the Video.. Did this and checked my fuse and nothing.. I thought I would add that many Fords have a Tilt Steering Wheel.. This may create a disconnect at the Plug Harness that connects to the Steering Wheel causing the Signals to fail completely.. If All these things in this Video Fail to fix your Signals? Check this area.. I could not find any Video for this last Fact.. Might save somebody some $$$ as the Flashers are not cheap..... Thanks again

Thanks Ford for making a simple turn signal relay replacement job take half the afternoon.Ford has been in business over a century and hasn't figured out how to put these critical relays in a hood panel or otherwise normal access location! Every other make of vehicle seems to understand the concept except Ford. Keep it simple STUPID. IF You waste your money buying a Ford you'll waste even more time FIXING IT every other day.

Some modes like my 03 f150 super crew it’s just right there in arms reach. Pulled out the bad one and put in the new and closed back up the plastic lid. Granted you have to lay on the ground and do it but mine didn’t need me to take off any panels.
