3:48 That "probably important" part is a tiny heat shield for the lower ball joint rubber boot. It protects it from the heat of the brake and extends its lifespan.

This is an excellent video. The equipment you use is what most diy mechanics would have. Except beam tool. You were working from the floor on your back which most of us would do (usually though it's pissing with rain) not hydraulic ramp. The step by step procedures is what I would follow myself. E.g when putting in bottom ball joints I was thinking once there in I would tap with hammer. Hey ho you did it. You had problems which was great we all have them but you worked your way around them in a way that we too would have to. All in all excellent content. 10 out of 10. Have subscribed. Thank you Eric the car guy.

Thanks to this series of videos I put a whole new clutch kit seen just like the one in this video for my 2001 Ford Focus and I only paid 120$ plus trans fluid. I would of never even attempted such a task but thanks to ericthecarguy I'm back on the road again not having to worry about getting rear ended with a burnt out clutch

@BlazerLT That's where my experience comes in. I know my tools and how much torque they put out so in a way it's like I 'feel' my way through things sometimes. There are times when I will insist on using a torque wrench such as installing the pressure plate but for everything else on this job I stand by what I did. Thanks for your input.

Hi Eric! I also have a Focus like this, only a 1.8 petrol station wagon. With EYDF engine. My clutch has been slipping for 2 years. And the previous mechanic overfilled the oil by one liter when changing the oil 2 years ago, and since then the oil has been flowing everywhere. But before that, not a drop flowed. The clutch housing is very oily from the outside. It is possible that my clutch slips because the overpressure caused by overfilling the oil has stretched the internal seal and the oil may be flowing to the clutch? But the interesting thing is that the clutch slips only with a warm engine. With a cold engine, it does not slip for 3-4 km if I push it, only when it starts to warm up.

Thank you Eric! I've done lots of car projects, but I've never replaced a clutch. Last winter, the key would not turn in the ignition. It was brutally cold! I got a ride, went back the next afternoon. I hot wired the Geo Storm and drove to The German Institute, where I volunteer. Next night, pulled the steering wheel, turn signal cluster, ignition housing, drilled it out, removed 3 broken tumblers, 3 degrees Fahrenheit with a shop light! Next night, put it back together. What a job!

If this was the first Front Wheel Drive, Ford (or others) made, you could forgive them for many of the things that are so difficult to do here, but they have made 100,000s! A car will need about 3-4 clutches in a lifetime, so consideration is needed in the design and build for maintenance. You would think the clutch would last forever the way it is embedded in the vehicle. Just a whine about the lack of auto-engineering from a maintenance perspective. Your doing a great Job Eric - Thank You!

I did a tiny bit of research on how much a job like this MIGHT cost, the clutch & gear fluid is about $210 (parts maybe cheeper where you are) and baised on the on how much my last clutch job cost on my '01 Ford Escort ZX-2 (the predsessor to the Focus) Your viewers will save a bare bones minimum of at least $600 in labor cost doing this job themselves. That's $600 smackers to go towards paying off all those holiday credit card charges. Thank you Eric for this freebie holiday video series.

Thanks Eric for these vids, they are a handy reference, i've just changed out the clutch on my focus , it was noisy when the pedal was pressed down, found 1 of the 3 bolts had a bolt hole with stripped thread holding the thrust bearing so it was leaking gear oil in the bell housing, clutch was black, also had a cross threaded bolt under the turbo on the engine/gearbox which i managed to undo 2 full turns before it rounded the head off ! had to blow the head off it with the ark welder

@wb2vsj No but I have dropped a camera or 2. I put wide angle lenses on them so I don't damage the actual camera lens if I drop one as they are a lot cheeper to replace than a camera is, they also offer a wider angle of view.

Eric, Thank you for this video set and great job! (I know this was done many years ago). I have a 2002 Focus wagon 5-speed (2.0L Zetec engine, 95K mi) and a 2005 Focus 4 door sedan 5-speed (2.0L Duratec engine, 185K mi). These are good transmissions and both are still on their original clutches. I had a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 that went 275K miles and was still on its original clutch (same basic design as the Focus) before I scrapped the car due to extensive underbody rust issues Paul

@Galley415 I never thought of jacking all four wheels at once to rotate tires. Here in Canada I do that twice per year for winter tires. Interesting idea, thanks for the input. When I last had a vehicle up on all four, I did wonder about stability, since there is no wheel on the ground to slow lateral movement. But I guess you would say that with rotation you don't have to crawl under, so it's just worry about damage to the vehicle if it slumps sideways off all the jacks....

My clutch chatters going into 1st. I believe the input shaft bearing is loose causing it. I'm not looking forward to taking the trans apart & replacing it, but it has to be done. Thanks.

Hey Eric, I know you probably know this, but GL-4 gear lube is the one you should use on synchronized gearboxes. GL-5 actually corrodes the brass cone clutch of the synchros and will eventually cause grinding when shifting. GL-5 is ok for diffs, but for any yellow metals you have to use GL-4 rated lube.

I noticed the same thing on my Toyota: The clutch and brakes now share a single brake fluid reservoir. I think some engineering went into it and it's not as bad as one might think at first glance. You may be aware that most modern cars have two brake circuits, so that a problem with one of them means you can still brake with half your wheels? Now if you look carefully on any such modern car, there is a divider inside the brake fluid reservoir that ensures that a leak in one circuit can only deplete the fluid level up to a certain minimum level. After that, the divider ensures that the good circuit has a minimum of fluid to work with. Now... I haven't checked this, but I suspect the same thing is done for the clutch. They likely have it partitioned so that a leak in the clutch circuit will leave enough fluid for the brakes to continue working.

Here's a suggestion to prying down the lower control arm: Place a piece of sturdy chain over the top of the control arm and run a nut and bolt through under the control arm leaving some room to slide your prybar through. The slide your prybar through the chain and just rest the end against the the control arm and pry down. You get a lot more leverage tis way and is also a lot safer.

@urbex2007 Honestly clutches aren't that bad in my opinion as it's really just parts replacement, I guess the more you do the more you get used to it. I use Diamond Grip gloves and have for years. Gearbox oil doesn't need to be changed like engine oil does but about every 30-50K should be good but check the owners manual for your application.

@jdmfreak92 A lift would be nice but I like to see how to do things without one because that’s exactly how most people watching these videos will have to do it - and that’s one of the things I like about Eric’s site, he shows how a typical DIYer can work on their car. He’s not showing off how to do it using $50 grand worth of specialized equipment that nobody would have access to. I also like the fact that he doesn’t edit out the parts when things don’t go according to plan.

Amazing. Thank you for still having this up. This lead me to be a regular on your site. What a great resource. I have two "FORD DNW FOCUS", one from 1999 the other from 2002. Can I take the clutch from one and put in the other? Are they similar enough? Anyone know, anyone tried? The 1999 one has a worn-out clutch. The other has a dead instrument panel (which I understand can get a little complicated). Wonder which one to salvage?
