As I get older I learn basically every answer to the question “why does fun thing from early 00s not exist anymore?” Is the 2008 crash.
@dhillaz
@dhillaz Жыл бұрын
I have a hypothesis - if it were not for the unsustainable growth in the late 90s and early 2000s, would cars like the S2000 have even had the chance to be created? 2013 to 2020 was one of the steadiest sustained growth periods in US history, broken only by a pandemic. My perception is that far fewer interesting cars were developed in that era. Add to that how the Japanese economic bubble of the early 90s gave us many idolized cars - perhaps there is a pattern. Perhaps it is only when we stray from economic efficiency that we have the room to create products that aren't constrained by measurable market wants.
@Eirik_Bloodaxe
@Eirik_Bloodaxe Жыл бұрын
@@dhillaz at least as it pertains to cars, I’d say that inflation to the cost of making cars, and if the company was already doing exceptionally well because the economy is doing well, does ofc lend itself to them taking more risks to make “fun” and “weird cars”. If you’re making money hand over fist, and people are willing/able to buy extra things, and the risk of completely blowing your company is nil, you can do whatever you want. If that’s what you mean. Edit: I think the 2013-2020 periods lack of interesting cars is because cars have become more expensive to make, and safety and emissions regulations are stricter.

Honda never recovered certainly. They lost their rnd budget over those years and went from alway 1 step ahead to always 2 steps behind. There is no Honda now that isn't a worse, more expensive version of other companies innovations.
@theawesomeguy9999
@theawesomeguy9999 Жыл бұрын
@@Eirik_Bloodaxe Hit the nail on the head with cars being more expensive to make with safety and emissions, but I would argue almost more importantly is where the current wealth concentration is at. Car manufacturers build cars to sell them, and who is buying new cars right now? Older folks with money that's who. And what are older folks with money buying? Crossovers, trucks, and SUVs. Everyone I know who has bought new cars in the past decade are people in their 40s and up who want a vehicle that's high up and easy to get into and out of. Plus bigger vehicles have become a status symbol. Kids ready to buy their first car or young adults in their 20s-30s can barely afford any new car, so most are forced to buy used especially if they want something fun. If that is the case why would auto makers build unique and fun performance cars if there is no real market for it?

I was 23 in 2017 when I got a phat re-enlistment bonus for being a nuclear technician in the Navy. I bought a 2003 S2000 with 40k miles for $13,000 in cash. Typical military thing to do, but God, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I beat the shit out of that car for 5 years. I tracked it a handful of times. I gutted it out, cut the body, added flares, removed the soft top frame, got a carbon fiber hardtop, track prepped it, tuned the suspension and tires a bit, barely even tracked it, the paint faded so badly but I drove the shit out of it. I put 80k+ miles on it. It ACTUALLY was my personality. I was obsessed with that car. Unfortunately, life happens, and I have other expensive hobbies. I had to make a choice: keep my pride and joy and go broke trying to keep up with the maintenance, which isn't much maintenance, I might add, but it can get expensive when it comes up, especially when the list gets longer as you keep shirking it off and can't keep up with it financially (especially when you have other expensive hobbies), or sell the car for something cheaper and more practical. I decided to cut my losses and sell the car to get a honda fit, because I figured it would be better to sell it while I was still ahead. I listed it with about 120k miles for $10,000. Probably could have gotten at least $20,000 if I hadn't butchered it for the track, too. It needed a lot of TLC that I didn't have the money, time, or energy to give it. It was a track car. I pissed away SO MUCH of the value by gutting and cutting it, and neglecting the paint. It needed a new windshield, new rear window, the clutch needed some attention, new tires, suspension work, acceleration was getting a little sluggish, it was probably overdue for timing chain work, there were a few things too but I can't remember anymore. I loved that car so much, but I couldn't keep it any longer, from an economical standpoint that is. My car was the cheapest running S2000 on the market when I listed it for $10,000. I wasn't expecting to get that much, either. A bunch of people were tire kickers and a bunch of people were pulling my chain, low balling the hell out of me. I had one guy offer my $6800 and he owned a Lamborghini. Finally, someone offered me $9500, and I accepted it. He was going to come in from out of town later that week to get it. But this 18 year old kid messages me about how badly he wanted the car. He said it was his dream car. He offered me my asking price. I told him that I already had a buyer (I didn't want to skimp someone on our deal over $500). The kid offered me $500 over my asking price for it. I could tell that this kid REALLY wanted the car. He didn't want it as a trifle toy like lot of adults that ive seen owning one. He didn't want it as an investment to end up becoming a garage queen. He BEGGED me for this car. At 2 AM. He wanted to DRIVE it. I could tell this kid was just as passionate about this car as I was. I ended up selling it to him, too. The other guy told me to go fuck myself and that he hoped karma screws me over because of it, but he never paid me a deposit either so nothing was set in stone. This kid drove 5 hours to come see the car. His dad tried to talk him out of it, too, but he stood his ground. That's when I knew this car was going to the right person, and I felt good about my decision. Now, there is still another S2000 on the road that is being driven and ENJOYED, APPRECIATED for what it is instead of sitting in a garage or a museum for decades to come, and I just know that this kid is going to have the coolest stories about how he owned an exotic and rare sports car when he was a kid, 50 years from now. I gave that kid the opportunity to own his dream car as a teenager, and that makes me feel 10 times better about the decision to sell it. I sure am going to miss that car, though. It really felt like it was built for me. Every part of it was perfectly suited to me. It didn't even bother me that the steering wheel wasnt adjustable, because the seating placement felt perfect to me. It felt special the minute i first drove it. Like I was a baby duckling who finally get attached to it. I made a lot of lifelong friends because of that car, too. That machine was more than a car to me-It was my escape, and it was a direct extension of myself.

As an AP2 owner, I agree 100% with every single thing you said about the car. It's hard to explain sometimes, but you nailed it with the idea that "everything about the car is there for your excitement and driving pleasure." And it's designed for, really, no one in particular except the engineers and their vision. It's a car that can never exist again, and unfortunately people have started to figure that out. An EV version would lack the wild powertrain, transmission, and low-weight combo. It might be fun in its own way, but it will be an S-car only in name.

@@updog4L Yes, one can dream but even here in California the majority of the state simply does not have the infrastructure to support EV vehicles. I remember the S2000 being the hottest thing when it launched, but by 2005 most had forgotten about it. It was a meme for owners to trade them in for M3s and god knows what else, bitching that the S2000 was gutless. So its days were numbered well before its eventually demise. I also recall values dropping into the low $20k range, with abused examples going lower. The few I saw on the road were always ruined by shitty mods. Even those gradually disappeared as owners acquainted themselves with snap oversteer and wrecked their cars. The S2000 is a fantastic car but the enthusiast community did it no favors.

I bought my 2007 four years ago and driving it always makes my happy. I’ve had many cars that I had an emotional attachment to but the way my S2000 makes me feel when driving it on a lonely country road with a lot of curves blows the others away. It might not be the fastest car I’ve owned but definitely the most satisfying experience by far.

I had bought a s2000 in 2016 for 17k~ from a dealership. it was a yellow ap2. it was amazing , and made alot of good memories with it. one night driving home some truck ran a red light and the car was totaled.. i later on bought one in silver but it was not the same, and i was goin thru things so i had to let her go. I’m hoping i get the chance to buy one more but it’d have to be yellow or white for sure !

What's wild to me is that although it feels slow compared to today's cars (and wasn't especially quick even in 1999), it still looks and handles very well among more modern options. Honda was never about having competitive straight-line performance though with any car. It was always about the driving experience.

This car is pure driving experience. Cos judging by the very slow progression of numbers on the speedo compared to the rev counter, its not about speed. My Jaguar is much faster and has 1/10th the engagement. My Miata has 11/10ths the engagement but its rev counter only goes up to six and a half. I want an AP1 s2000.

My uninspiring, 1.6L gasoline '04 Opel Astra (Saturn Astra there in the USA) producing a whopping 105Hp and the same engine torque than the wheel lugnuts require, which averages 30MPG, dies at 4500 RPM. I call it gasodiesel. Watching that Honda coming alive from 6000 to 9000 RPM is something I aspire to own or heck, even drive someday. Keep up the amazing work!

Ah, Regular Car Reviews, once again demonstrating the zenith of automotive critique in a sea of plebeian banter. How quaint. The Honda S2000, as any individual with an iota of discernment would acknowledge, is an engineering magnum opus; a testament to the unparalleled genius of Honda's cognoscenti. To dismiss the S2000 and its aficionados is to dismiss Da Vinci as merely a doodler. But please, continue with your pedestrian jabs.🍷🧐

Having driven a '99 Honda Insight, I can totally agree. Like don't get me wrong, the insight wasn't anything to be proud of or happy with, but it smacked around corners and no one can deny that. And that interior really felt like you were driving some nutty Honda sports car. So when you got that thing up to speed, and whipped it around a corner, it really felt like something wild cause, manual, plastic body, itty-bitty little engine, 2-seater, that thing honestly mobbed like nothing I've ever driven. I can only imagine the S2000 just being like that but a million times better. I'd love to experience something like that someday

I still think this is the best posthumous tribute the company has ever given Soichiro Honda. The Type R and NSX are sweet cars, but the S2000 was just smooth/insane enough to fit in with a brand started by a guy that wanted to take on F1

I had a 2000 s2000 in 2004-2007… I should NOT have sold that car. I’ve had and sold every epic underrated car from the 90s and 2000s. I had a Honda ITR at the same time as the s2000, not a conversion, the real thing and anyone that’s ever driven one knows it’s the best FWD drive car of all time, it was more rare and special than the s2k, but I drove the s2k way more. I had an awesome e36, a 300zx, the first SRT Charger, a Contour SVT, several Civics and integras from the eg and ek era. NOTHING else is an S2k. It’s special in the way a Supra is special.. you can buy other cars that look similar with the same philosophy, but nothing is a Supra, like nothing is an S2000. An M roadster should be better on paper, but comparatively, it’s joyless to drive (yes, a bmw M car with no roof is less special than this timeless machine). I sold mine because I was worried about mileage. I’ve seen examples with 350k miles with the drivetrain appearing to have lost none of its “go”… silly me.. this video has convinced me.. I’m going to buy one to drive before they become SO expensive you can’t even find a good driver.. I saw one for 23k and change the other day with 117k miles.. it’s a very expensive used car.. but if I were to keep up with the maintenance and keep it at least as good as I bought it at, it’s doubtful it would depreciate significantly if at all for another 100k miles.. Longest comment ever, but let’s also acknowledge that preparing to take one of these to 250k miles is far less frightening than attempting to do the same with an e46 M3.. you can run them 400k miles or so, but you’ll have paid for the car twice in maintenance and repairs to keep it that way. With the s2k, it needs oil, a timing chain, spark plugs and a clutch.. and it’ll do the distance between 120k and 250k miles. S2k for the win, every single time

The 'getenteredtowin' business is one of the most scummy lotteries masquerading as a 'giveaway' that I've ever seen. I'm really disappointed whenever I see a good channel, like RCR and Forgotten Weapons partner with them. Using military service to advertise your gambling operation is a very low move indeed.

The S2000's deserves it's RCR day in the sun. In the spring of 2001, I started working new car sales at one of several Honda dealerships in the Baton Rouge, LA area. The dealership had 3 on the lot and 1 in the showroom. It was an absolute pleasure taking people on test drives even if they were only there for a civic or accord. 3It's such an amazing car to drive using all the superlatives to describe the overall experience. I later got reprimanded by my boss for taking the S2000's out way too much for so called "off the lot" customer demos. I was really just joyriding the hell out of them. 😊

I was fortunate enough to buy my S2000 while I was in college in 2019 and I still have it. I love it so much and I'm slowly turning it into a track car. The second you get into these cars you can tell it was meant for so much more than simply being a weekend cruiser, though it will do that happily. For my 22nd birthday, I thought I'd have some fun and rent out a Foat 124 Spider at Monterey Beach and experience what classic roadsters were like and I swear... half the time I just thought that I wasted my money instead of just driving my S2000 lol
