Interesting notes about this game:
1. This was the final year of using natural grass at the Big House. It lasted 12 seasons before it became too much of a pain to maintain. The field never looked worse than for this game. You can see clumps of grass and dirt flying on almost every tackle.
2. The first 4 minutes of this game was never broadcast (at least in the Metro Detroit area) because the Florida State/Miami game went over. This was joined in progress right after the Zia Combs injury. Carr feared that he had suffered a neck injury but Zia regained full movement the following day.
3. This is one of those classic games where Penn State fans never bitched more about the refs screwing them over, they always favor Michigan, the Big 10 is out to get us, blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda. It doesn't matter that UM was penalized for more yards in this game and that PSU was the least penalized team in the conference in 02. It doesn't matter that PSU got away with bad calls all night like Brian Scott mugging Braylon Edwards and not getting flagged (14:13) or Zach Mills hiking the ball after the clock had run out and PSU not getting charged with delay of game in OT (23:45) or the bogus 1st down "catch" on 3rd and long by Bryant Johnson that wasn't a catch (22:05). I always figured the second Johnson catch was a makeup call. Both feet were in bounds but tivo shows that he was juggling the ball as he went down. So, whatever. We cheat, we're dirty, the refs love us, hate PSU, etc. No matter what you point out to prove them wrong, you will not win this debate with a Penn State fan. So just smile and nod and accept their ignorance.
Game played on October 12, 2002 in Ann Arbor.

I was there for this entire game with my dad up in the south end of the stadium stands. The whole thing going back and forth between both teams, even as we went into overtime not a single person in the stands left the game, all waiting to see what would happen. And when Chris Perry finally rushed in to nab the game winning touchdown in overtime, it was the loudest I ever heard that stadium roar. Just the noise and echo of all of the cheers and the band playing The Victors. It was one hell of a game.

This was my senior year at UM, what a great game! Two other historical notes on this game: 1) First OT in Michigan Stadium. The delay due to the terrible injury to Combs and OT made the end a true night game atmosphere, it was awesome! 2) First ever Maize Out in the football student section. The drum major of the marching band started an email campaign to get all the students to wear maize for this game (like what was already done at hockey and basketball games). You can see at the end of the video when the team runs to the north endzone to celebrate with the students that most are wearing maize, but a wide variety of shades of maize. The athletic dept starting selling official maize T-shirts to the students the following season and now you have the more uniform look today.

The game that birthed instant replay in college football. You'll never hear this officially, but I was working for Penn State at the time and we threatened to leave the Big Ten. We had boosters willing to shell out $20M for the exit fee. JoePa wanted out. Instant replay was the compromise.

@WolverineHistorian: Your complaint about the Bryant Johnson catch - 22:05 - is bogus. The ref hesitated before calling it a catch. He was right. Watch it slowly and it looks like a catch. Since he caught it with his body on the ground, the play is over as soon as he catches it - his right leg bounces the ball out after the catch. By NFL rules today, that play is not a catch, but by 2002 NCAA rules, it WAS a catch. Honestly, I prefer the old NCAA rules anyway since NFL rules led to absurd nonsense like the Jesse James Patriots play a few years ago. In a fuller version of this game, both announcers, after several replays, eventually agree that the play was a catch and the ball popped out after Bryant Johnson had completed it. For whatever reason, you chose not to include the replay that showed Tony Johnson getting both of his feet in-bounds. You say he bobbled it, but the ref didn't signal that, rather he signaled that Johnson was supposedly out of bounds. And the Bryan Scott PI (a bad call) was irrelevant because Michigan scored right after that. Penn State absolutely got hosed in regulation just as they did in 2005 when Mike "he never fumbles" Hart fumbled in direct view of a ref but got called down inexplicably. That play led to a Michigan field goal in a game they won by 2 points.

I was thinking the same - today the Bryant Johnson reception certainly gets reversed, but they have toughened the rules for what is a catch since 2002....

It's inherently obvious that the talent Michigan had during Carr's tenure was insane. A lot of these players moved on to have successful NFL careers. It must have been dope as fuck to be a student at Umich during the 90s and early 2000s. Now it kinda sucks. All i do is waste my time on facebook haha

PSU fans are the biggest whiners. They ignore all the ref breaks they get In this game, they also got a break by the linesmen not calling a TD when Perry scored in the second qtr. The linesmen didn't give Navarre a TD when he was obviously in, it was up to the ref to do that. My personal PSU whine is the 2 seconds they put back on the clock in 2005 when Carr called a TO. I've hear them say only Carr would have got that time back, butPaterno got 2 seconds back himself earlier in the game.

I was at this game, and it was a classic -- and yes, Michigan was on the receiving end of some VERY BAD calls, as pointed out by WH above. The other amusing part about this game was watching JoePa the entire time on the sidelines. He was hardly paying attention to the field -- seriously, he spent most of the game chasing the referee up and down the sideline and screaming at him.

One of the worst officiated games I've ever seen. The announcers usually do a good job at pointing out all the lucky breaks Penn State gets, but check this glaring example out. 23:45 - look at the play clock. What a joke.

Was this also the last year the coaches wore the old style Block M hat that Bo was always seen in? Now the M looks fatter and the hats often have some kind of stripe or other design, the old one was timeless.

I still content to this day that the reason this game was even as it ended was becaucse coming into this game Marlin Jackson was a blanket on people. When Combs went down Jackson's head was gone the rest of the game and he just got smoked over and over again this game.

That's not very nice...the poor kid had nobody to throw to his last 2 years, his best receiver was the backup QB, and he had to play a predictable, dumb offensive style throwing to the fullback out of the heavy I and all that crap instead of opening things up with 4WR like they started doing the year after he left. Look at how Michael Robinson couldn't even beat out Mills in 04, and then in 05 after Mills graduated they got all those fast young receivers and updated the offense and Robinson goes 11-1 and they win the orange bowl.

I am creating a playlist of the most memorable Penn St - Michigan games, and plan to make this game #1 (sorry using a different vid) rather than a game that my beloved Lions won because I remember it, to this day, as the worst officiated sporting event I have ever seen. So if you will oblige me with one more bit of ignorance in response to your propaganda: It doesn't matter if the statistics show Michigan had more penalty yards at the end of the game - it's about how those calls in critical moments made it seem that the refs were determined to decide the outcome of the game - Michigan punter lands on a Penn St defender and they call a personal foul instead of running-into-the-punter which would not have given them the 1st down that led to the TD, Tony Johnson w 2 feet in bounds and you could see his footprints in the loose Michigan Stadium sod, the made up Penn St offsides in OT which put Michigan down on the goal line....
