I have had my 2002 ranger since 2002 and have never had a problem with it. I use it around the acreage hauling hay, gravel, dirt, etc, pulling a small manure spreader, and plowing snow with its 6-foot manual snow blade, plus just riding it around here. It has been a beast for me for 19 years with no problems until this morning. All I got was a "click" when trying the ignition, and this has been happening occasionally for the last couple of weeks but it did start after trying the second time usually but not this morning. I checked all the battery connections and they appear to be good. I then came into the house and pulled up your video. My starter is doing exactly what yours did. I tapped on it and it turned over. I shut it off and tried again and it just clicked. I tapped it while trying to start it and it turned over slowly, but turned over. I am going to order a new starter and hopefully, my hands aren't too big to fit down into that very small space. Just looking, it looks impossible but I did watch your video and you did a good job of showing us how to do it. I probably should try to order a new bottle of "patience" because I am pretty confident I am going to run out of that! Thanks for sharing!!! J.R.

Well thank you. Saved me pulling my remaining hair out. The trick was popping the starter out past the o-ring with a lever, then there was room to rotate the whole starter to get it out past that remaining bolt. I did a rebuild kit with brushes and bearings. Thanks again bud.

I almost gave up. Watched your video again and said "if he can get it out, so can I". Another 20 mins and I got it out. Cut down the bolts to make install easier. Thanks for the video!

For anyone looking, this method also works for 2005 Ranger starter removal. Getting that bottom bolt out takes patience. After starter has been pried back, rotate starter in a clockwise direction. If you get frustrated, walk away and come back later. It WILL come out this way. If you're still around, thanks mossman.

Forgot to mention that I also removed the carb on my 2005.

Sharing my thanks. Just replaced mine. Yep, bottom bolt was hard. I walked away after 45 mins of trying to get bottom bolt back in. Within 2 minutes, had it back together and fired right back up. Much thanks!

Amazing video mah dude. I have the same rig, and my starter just died. Man this thing was a beast to get loose. I would also recommend using a ratchet strap to pull back the radiator hose. My knuckles are destroyed, but I got it. Thanks again.

Brilliant video. You've saved me a lot of heart-ache and I would never have thought of rotating it to ease it out. But I will admit I did remove the carburetor to make things easier. So thanks again from New Zealand.

Thanks for the vid. When I reinstalled the starter motor I shortened that bottom bolt by 4mm which made it a whole lot easier getting it in. I couldn’t actually get it back in until I did that.

An invaluable resource you've provided for dudes like me who buy old stuff lol. I appreciate it, dude. So much. I've been a subscriber since I picked up an 04 ranger a few weeks ago. Got cold, starter decided to wait until it hurt to hold a wrench to show it was bad. This vid will be cued up when the new one comes in a couple days. Thanks so much, mossman!!

Sorry, I don't remember your name and such. I think It's important to say something, hope it isn't offensive that I have a very poor memory. I have a 2004 Polaris ranger, I am on my 4th or 5th starter replacement. The very first was a hell that lasted a week, till I saw this video you put up. Yup, I lost another starter, Tried to do it from memory, but like I said I don't have that anymore. What I did remember, was I saw this video on youtube somewhere, so again, the ranger is working (for now). So, My comment........thanks. Thanks for today and the other starter and actually the other repairs I watched. I'm glad you bought a ranger with so many problems....they don't make them to work on. GREAT JOB BUD!!!!!! Hope your Ranger has screwed up more so when it's time for something else to go wrong I can see what you did.

Glad the video helped. It's not that my Ranger has had so many problems but that I have bought many of these older Rangers over the years. People usually sell them when they have problems. I buy them and have to fix them.

I used a wood clamp to help keep all the extra cables and stuff out of the way, made it easier to get a wrench and hands in there. Then I used some para-cord attached to the bolt hole where the negative terminal was attached, then attached the other end of the paracord to a wood clamp that was also attached to the top roll cage bar above seat... then started compressing the clamp to rotate and pull the starter. I also applied some lube to the splines area of the starter to help it move. It "popped" right out. Thanks for the tip on "rotating" it!

great video! I just did my 06 Polaris Ranger 500 starter and when you get to that last screw have someone use that same flat head screw driver and gently pry on it from the back side while you wiggle and turn it and it will pop right out. if you use both hands to seat and start that same bitch of a screw back in it works great. Thank you for this video and thank you to all comments that are helpful..... Don't take the carb off you can do this job with out it.

The starter bendix will stay in place when you pull the starter out. If you look at my cleaning pickup coil video you can see what the starter bendix looks like. No need to pull the clutch to do this job.

Mossman - excellent video. I need to clarify one thing. I do have 12+ volts at the starter when I turn the key and press the break, but the starter does not turn. You can hear the click when the starter solenoid pull in. I'm thinking my problem is the starter, but before I pull it, is there other things I need to check?
@mossman3817 жыл бұрын
I would say bad starter.
@mossman38111 жыл бұрын
New starter was not bad. When you have older stuff that is the way it is.

Definitely not the hardest starter install but did take some time.

How many volt is the starter suppose to have when starting? Full 13vdc? I’m only getting 9vdc past my solenoid. I’m guess my solenoid is bad. Thx
