2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder Review - Not a Miata!

Mid-engined and roughly 200 pounds lighter than a similar year Mazda Miata MX-5, the MR2 was light and eager to change directions, but its recent price increase on the used market brings it closer in price to a Honda S2000 and begs the question, is it worth it? I found out my answer to that and more in this video.

Small Correction: The 00-02 (pre-facelift) models have staggered wheels. Same diameter front and back, but slightly wider wheels in the rear. Taller tires in the rear as well. Rear hubs have an indent that prevent them from being installed on the front.

"Is it worth it?" is a question that can only be answered by the owner / driver. I've had mine 12 years and still enjoy it so much I cannot wait until my next outing. Almost embarrassing to confess, I feel like a kid on Christmas eve whenever I know that the next day will be a sunny, clear, "top down day." To me, yes, it is worth it.

@takz0743

@@AustinSmith-fo8jg They are fun and have plenty of personality, but as far as safety goes, it would depend a lot on the experience and maturity of the driver. Cars in general are dangerous in the hands of anyone, and especially high schoolers; this would be more dangerous than the average car, especially where you have icy or snowy roads. I really couldn't recommend this as a first car. A level-headed high schooler who has experience driving, who isn't prone to racing, taking chances and showing off, and who doesn't need to carry lots of people or cargo, will be rewarded with this. Also, you are small and lower down, so you are harder for others to see. And I must add that a second car will be needed for big shopping trips. As long as you have understanding family or friends that can help in that area, no problem. To sum up, safety-wise and utility-wise, you need to pretend that you are riding a motorcycle. If you approach it with that attitude, you will probably be OK.

@@veganwaffle Absolutely it's worth it. Mine rides on cut springs with stock wheels with no issues regarding rubbing unless an expected bump in the road arrises. I have its engine bay nappy still on its underside which gets the odd scrape, but it feel so much more like a go kart that you're really part of the road (in a good way). It turns with no issues. I only drive it 3 or 4 times a year but it always turns heads. "...having too much fun to care about my own mortality" Ha! Great review. I have had my 2003 Spyder since new, it's close to 74k miles now. It does rattle. If I drive for more than 2 hours in one day my back hurts. No trunk means you never have to pick anyone up at the airport. Shifting really is the fun part: bouncing between second and third on a lonely, windy country road with the top down and all that oversteer is where the MR2 Spyder excels.

I think that snap oversteer for the mk3 is just a carried over misnomer from the way earlier mr2's. They had long fixed that issue by this model! Unless it's raining, or you're pushing it stupidly hard (as any rear engine car will oversteer eventually if you keep pushing it further and further), you've got nothing to worry about at all imho.
@Zeriel00
@Zeriel00 Жыл бұрын
I've pushed mine HARD and didn't even budge. Calling it snappy is probably because they either put more HP on it (2ZZ) and still try to drive it the same way or just don't know how to take corners on a mid engine car. Of course if you try to drift it like an 86 you're going to spin around, the whole point of the MR2 is how fast it turns due to its layout and lightweight. Trying to drive it like a drift car is dumb and will make people hug a tree.

I love my 2002 MR2 bought new in December 2021 right off the showroom floor. I saw it and I had to have it. I don't care about trunk space, the radio, cup holders, or sitting on the engine. The top has holes, the drivers seat is worn, the leather on the shifter is flowered, but I love driving the thing on Nashville's winding backroads and I have close to 190k miles on it. I buy tires for it about every 2 to 3 years and keep the oil changed. I love "that little car" as my wife calls it. Thanks for the review it was good.

I bought a used 2003 MR2 with 15K miles in 2005 for $19K. It currently has 78K miles and has experienced no mechanical problems other than having the soft top replaced and the drains in the soft top well widened. This week I test drove a 2021 Mazda MX-5 RF Miata thinking I would replace the MR2 but, while the Miata is clearly the better vehicle (with 18 years of technology and at $36K it should be), it isn't any more fun to drive than the MR2. I'm sticking with the MR2 until it starts needing serious mechanical repairs.

Great review. Here are my thoughts on all three gens of the MR2. 1st gen was the most twitchy and dangerous in the corners, especially with the dead on center feel from the steering. 2nd gen looks the best in my opinion and most of the twitchy behavior was gone but it weighed too much. 3rd gen drives the best in my opinion and they dialed in the dynamics better than the previous two gens. 4th gen I hope will come out one day! I cross shopped all three gens when I bought my NB Miata but ease of sliding the Miata around won me over an it didn’t weigh that much more being 2,299 pounds.

Even towed my motorcycle to track days. Cruise control would have been a nice option but not available on early models. Of the many cars I’ve owned the little spyder got the most positive comments and interest.

I think the concerns about snap oversteer are not totally unfounded, but might largely be a holdover from the SW20. Back in March I hit a deer with my commuter car, so I've been dailying my MR2 Spyder since then, even during several heavy Midwestern rainstorms. The only time it ever really started to rotate enough to scare me was during one of those storms, when I got cocky on the interstate and crested a hill with a slight left curve at nearly 80, and I was able to steer into it and recover instantly. The gen 3 isn't nearly as scary as the rumors suggest, so long as you have decent tires inflated to the proper figures

Recommendations: -skip the SMT (makes the car slower and can be problematic/ expensive to fix) -03 TO 05 are best for avoiding precat failure, but that said, get them out anyway (swap to an aftermarket header or take off the factory one, hammer out the material and be sure to power wash the header after knocking the precat matrix out). Wear respiratory protection and do this outdoors. -snap oversteer is highly unlikely. I have an 03 and never experienced it. Drive it to have fun, but like any car don’t push it too hard. -underbracing helps, a lot, and you don’t need much (typically a ‘breast plate’ works very well by itself) -a 6 speed manual swap is fantastic and makes this a great highway car (especially with the Euro spec C66 transmission with the 3.91 final drive) I also will never part with mine.

Just had to clean the exterior from dust and replace the brakes and I got it for £200 and the brake replacement cost me £780 but saying some of these cars that had done triple the miles and were in not the best condition for around £4000 it was an absolute steal. Drives beautifully and the storage behind the seats are very handy. Would definetely recommend it as an excellent car to buy and a very good first car believe it or not, insurance is only £415 and I'm 18 and the mpg believe it or not is extremely good and a decent amount of storage space

Sounds like a great idea, but the reality is not so great unless you spend a whole lotta dough having the exhaust system tuned to the vehicle by an expert tuner. My son had one for a while with an aftermarket exhaust system and the magnificent torque curve that that little engine produces was AWOL. It moved all of the power from the bottom and mid range to the top end, so unless you were constantly thumping it out to the red line the vehicle was positively lethargic and our one with the factory exhaust system would leave it for dead everywhere, not to mention the constant horrible drone that had to be tolerated in many driving scenarios and the tendency created by the necessity to constantly rev the car attracting unwanted attention from a certain source, (if you get my drift) lol

Snap oversteer reputation comes from mk1 and mk2, the ZZW30 (mk3) is less dangerous. Imo, the mk3 is very underated, the handling is fantastic. The mk2 is overrated, it's like the dragster one of the 3 Mr2 but that's it.

Nice review mate, these cars have their own vibes, they should be understood when you’re buying one and they are beautiful for what they are individually, I like S2000 soo much. Also Honda Preludes seem very nice, just saw one(1998) for 2350$ in a very nice shape... but whatever xD Nice to hear that you still work on the Mustang.

All mid engined cars demand respect and understanding in the wet but the Mk3 has a longer wheelbase than earlier MR2s giving it fantastic handling. The much repeated snap oversteer issue was attributed to early Mk2s. Mk1 and Mk3 do not suffer from snap oversteer, other than being mid engined and needing this respect/understanding. Personally, i prefer cars with minimal overhangs - the longer wheelbase suits the look of the car. When i owned a Mk3, the pods behind the seats were perfect for all my needs. Admittedly weekends away with +1 necessitated soft bags rather than hard cases, but that was fine with me. Stunning car, stunning handling - but does need good tyres.

Just replaced the tires.. only real snap overseer, unintended, happened with the original Bridgestone RE050 tires on dry and light rain - those tires are trash...note a few added updates....cold air intake, racing headers, pre-cat delete, double strut tower braces, drilled rotors, EBC brakes, coilovers, stereo upgrade...all make the car so much enjoyable engine & handling feel and sound without a trashy ride

Stock, the car doesnt make much power and is barely impressive. Whats promising is the mid engine platform and light weight, this thing is much lighter than a miata, and only 100 lbs heavier than a lotus elise. You can really throw this thing around the corners and it will eat them up like a piece of cake. Maintenance is easy and cost efficient. I have a 2ZZ engine in mine, no check engine lights, and works like a dream. The 2ZZ redlines at 8,600 RPM compared to 7000 with the 1ZZ (stock). This car really comes to life with the extra power. Some Lotus cars used the 2ZZ engine coupled with a supercharger.

Being fair this is a review of a 2002 model in 2020. So a car that is 18 years old! And a guy 6'-3" has enough room. Which he will not in an S2000. Best fun-for-the-buck ever, IMO. (I've owned two.) One of the very cool (IMO) engineered features of the MR2 Spyder is that it has DRAINS at the bottom corners of the behind-the-seat storage compartment for the water to go when the top leaks. So it doesn't leak inside the passenger compartment and nothing actually gets wet or damaged. Water is directed out.

Miata's are also budget friendly with a wider selection of well made after market parts. Also a 50 / 50 weight distribution by moving back the engine behind the front axle. Easier to maintain & work on. My brother had a MK1 MR2 we were going to a Cubs game & he did a 180 degree spin on Lake Shore drive - but traffic was light & no drama. It just showed the snap oversteer on that car. Currently I drive a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top which is a blast & has the fun lightness of the Lotus Elise which it was designed after. I appreciate the lower HP roadsters that require a driver input to extract the performance out of them. Unlike the high HP auto transmission muscle cars with twice the weight.

Ahhhh no what toyota did was NOT cosmetic, the pre cats were a HUGE issue, so bad it would blow the engine. As a person who grew up working on 80's nissan z's the fact that toyota addressed that issue is a breath of fresh air. Can't count the amount of nissans with blown comps. That being said looks of a Porsche, handling of a miata, and reliability of a toyota, I'll gladly pay a bit more considering they actually outperformed high end cars

The MRS is dangerous because it has really high limits but when it reaches them it does it suddenly and without any warning so inexperienced drivers who get over confident will be spun around. It's also extremely dangerous with the wrong/worn tires and also in the wet it can spun around suddenly. Most people are used to brake on corners to gain grip but with the MR2 you have to step on the gas. Any braking or even sudden release of the gas pedal can throw it off balance. Over all it's an amazing car, and there's nothing like it for the price range.

Sadly the rims could not be repaired legally so I have mags bought at the first place i stopped, The one thing that never gets mentioned is that it uses almost no fuel due to power to weight ratio. With that said I just love spinning the rear out with the standard 1zz that is so easy. There is no luggage space due to bigger speaker installs so my work bag is on the passenger seat. I would, and you will love the car. In saying that, due to the fact that the cars are soft tops (unless you invest in an aftermarket hard top) there will be minor issues relating to the vehicle being exposed to weather extremes for lengthy periods of time, plus soft tops can be easy pickings for those that lean towards having a tendency to be light fingered! ... in an ideal world having undercover parking both at home and at school will go a long way towards keeping the car in good condition.
