I love doing silly little experiments like this. Here I have an 18 volt power tool battery feeding a buck-boost voltage regulator set to 13 volts DC. That power is applied to an ignition coil from a TrailBlazer. The yellow wire seen attached to the ignition coil is connected to terminal B where the PCM sends a 12 volt control signal to make the spark at the proper timing as determined by the PCM.
I had learned auto mechanics back in the early 70s where our ignition coils had a primary winding and a secondary winding and a set of contact points and so on. This is actually the first time I have explored a more modern ignition coil which is a whole different animal!
