2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner 4th Gen Buyer's Guide (Common Problems, Engines, Options, Specs)

Toyota took inspiration from Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, who were the first people to climb Mt. Everest in 1953. This inspiration was the driving force behind what Toyota called the most ambitious 4Runner to date. The exterior design of the 4th generation 4runner was certainly more macho when compared to the 3rd generation 4runner. The new body style was longer and wider than the previous look, while still maintaining the general shape of the 3rd generation 4runner.
Toyota wanted to emphasis the spaciousness of the 4th gen 4Runner interior. This brand new interior was larger in every dimension and offered more shoulder and hip room, in addition to greater cargo capacity. The dashboard sported a fully-integrated center stack that arranged all entertainment & HVAC displays logically. The central air vents were split up by the stereo while the HVAC controls were well labeled and offered large buttons for easy use. The gated shifter on the extra-wide center console housed an armrest with fold-out convenience tray. The rear HVAC ducts helped to keep all passengers comfortable.
When designing the 4th generation 4runner, Toyota’s research indicated that 80% of SUV buyers wanted a 6-cylinder engine. This new engine needed to have high power output, good durability with low maintenance, and high fuel efficiency with low emissions. Using 3D modeling helped Toyota produce their first all-aluminum truck engine with variable valve timing.The finished product was the brand-new 4.0L 60 degree v6. This DOHC 24V 6 cylinder utilized a long stroke high-torque design to produce 245 horsepower and 282 lb. ft. Of torque. Impressive numbers from 4 liters of displacement. This V6 uses chain driven cams and a serpentine drive belt with auto tensioner. The V6 was EPA certified as a low emissions vehicle and the use of the new linkless electronic throttle control system with intelligence helped to improve both performance and efficiency. In 2006, the engine received a new head gasket design and other revisions to make 236 horsepower along with 266 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM.
The 2UZ-FE was the first v8 engine ever offered in a 4runner. It debuted in the Tundra pickup in 2000 and quickly gained a reputation as smooth, refined engine with plenty of power. Initially, the engine produced 235 Hp @ 4,800 rpm and 320 ft/lbs @ 3,400 rpm. This DOHC 32V V8 utilized an iron block with aluminum heads, 9.6:1 compression ratio, and ultra-fine cell ceramic catalytic converters to be labeled as a low emissions vehicle. In 2005, the 2UZ received Toyota’s VVT-i variable valve timing with intelligence and a 10.0 to 1 compression ratio to produce 270 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque.
The 4Runner maintained it’s durable reputation and off-road cred by continuing to use a body-on-ladder frame chassis design that featured full-length boxed section frame rails. The use of large diameter body mounts helped increase torsional rigidity over the entire vehicle while improving cabin isolation from NVH. For towing, the V6 had a hitch mounted to the rear crossmember use a weight carrying hitch rated at up to 5000lbs while the V8 had the hitch mounted to the frame rails and use a weight distribution hitch rated at around 7000 lbs. The wheelbase was increased by 4.5” and there was 5.7" added to the width. Height with the roof Rack was 71.2".
Four-channel Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), as well as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC) were standard on all 4th gen 4Runner models. Suspension consisted of a double wishbone design in the front with a four-link rigid type suspension in the rear.
Standard on the Sport Edition and optional on the Limited was the X-REAS diagonal-linked relative absorber suspension system. Opposite corner shocks are cross-linked and their compression chambers share hydraulic fluid via a central control absorber. This absorber contains a free piston that pushes against a low-pressure nitrogen charge. This fluid is automatically transferred as needed during driving. During a hard left hand turn, fluid is transferred from the left rear shock to the right front shock, increasing the damping force where needed.
Four-wheel drive V6 4Runner models use a Multi-Mode shift-on-the-fly 4WD system with a Torsen® torque-sensing type limited-slip center differential with locking feature. This system allows the driver to select 4WD or 2WD operation. The V8 4WD models feature a full-time four-wheel drive system with the Torsen limited-slip center differential with locking feature. The Torsen differential distributes the power 40 percent front / 60 percent rear under most conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheel slip.

I've owned my 2008 4Runner for almost 15 years, no problems at all with regular dealer servicing. Everything still looks, works and drives like new. Love the power lift gate window. Even the paint (Salsa Red Pearl) shines like new.

Mine is 2004 limited with about 293,000 miles on it. It got original paint work. I bought it second hand only used by one person. No much work done than regular maintenance and change of brake pads. No oil leaks. The only present challenge was my air conditioning which has been done. Overall is a great vehicle and I intend keeping it for a longer time.

Mine is a 2004 Limited V6 4wd. I have 263,000 miles on it. Gets better mpg than new. Leaks nothing. I have re painted it, replaced brakes, shocks/struts, springs. Lifted it 2.5 inches. New wheels, stereo,speakers, front seats. Cat back exhaust. If you take care of them, they last.

@@johnthomas8061 your right @ break-in mileage for a 4 runner. Many more happy years left. These will become iconic trucks. Remember these were made in JAPAN that's why they are solid. My '04 v8 awd was used daily for work and on vacations in the mountains for the summer driven to our cabin out in west texas on very rough terrain where we spent many vacation years and it never developed a rattle one. Would drive 8 hours home and drove silky smooth. These are amazing vehicles.

I have a 2007 4.7 V8 Sport Edition model with over 222,220 miles on it and I love it who ever had it before raised it 2 or 3in looks better to me with the round wheel wells replaced hub bearings brakes the window sills are next to be replaced and the inner fender well needs replacing didn't have any when purchased but here in the mid west the winters can be brutal so I want 2 replaced them the frame is straight and has no major rust spot i am now a loyal Toyota 4Runner Enthusiasts 4Running4Life

Bought my 2003 V6 new and the only issue I’ve had was the AC relay going out. Not all early V6 have the HG issue. The 2004 has the most reported HG failures but not all of them. Road salt is the main issue for rusty frames and sticking calipers I’m at 281k miles and still going strong 💪.

the paint on my 06 has faded and is with Maaco for a full paint job. Those Endcaps know how to break off easy and the weather strip really show there age by wearing out especially at the rear. Miami weather has kept my frame solid except at the front bumper.

@@MrFairworld To make it work? Only the upper control arms are required to change when lifting. I went with 3in springs, bilstein shocks set to 2 notch and 1 inch strut spacers. Rear 2in springs and 3/4 spring spacers. I’d also recommend replacing the bump stops but not required.

nice find for 8k. Change those fluids every 60k with Toyota brand only and it will pay dividends. You can drop that trans pan and replace the tranny filter pretty easy yourself. Those have grease zerts from front to back (transfer case, drive shaft) be sure and push new grease when you do the fresh fluids. I have hauled a 2004 ford f-150 4x4 over 500 miles on a trailer with no problem. V8 is a beast.

What I am noticing, the average driver would sell their 4th gens between $6500-$10,000 as these people are just unaware of its value. I bought a black 05 Limited a few weeks ago for and am slowly making it my own. I think I'll have it painted a very dark gray and I'll probably powder coat the original rims when it gets a 2-3 inch lift with suspension upgrade and 33" tires. My goal is a gray man SHTF off road bug out vehicle that looks like a grocery getter to the casual observer. But first I'm going to Fluid Film and Surface Shield the frame, undercarriage and body panels to keep it from rusting. I looked long and hard to find a $10K 4Runner with no rust, and I plan on keeping it that way.

I have a 2006 4Runner with 126,000 miles. One owner, senior driven, no pets, children wives, smoking in vehicle. Pristine inside and out with the original paint, deep dripping navy blue. Except for gas, I have spent less than $5,000 on this SUV for oil, filters, tires, batteries, struts, brakes, rotors, timing belt, water pump, plugs, etc. That is way less than $300 per year for vehicle maintenance. Zero down time and only one unscheduled repair, a seeping (not leaking) thermostat housing. Never wrecked, no rust, garage housed. I have the 4.7 L V-8, but still get over 20.0 mpg in the city and up to 26 on the freeway if I keep my speed down. No one believes me, but I don't care. This is the best vehicle I have ever owned and I will never get rid of it. A new one would be a downgrade. Thanks for listening.

Best older Camry is 97-01. Most reliable older gen. The absolute best is probably the 04-06 V6 because it has the same engine and transmission as the 04-06 ES330 and RX330, which is probably the best sedan drivetrain Toyota has ever made.

I own a 2006 Toyota 4Runner V8 Limited AWD. The V8 version is not a true 4X4 locking system. Instead it have a AWD smart system which mine broke on me once and it was a stupid costly fix. My Body Frame have a lot of rust driving in Minnesota but still holding out. I soak the Dame Body frame with W40 every spring. For the transmission and the 4.7 V8 is bullet proof never have issue and now over 210,000 milage and still running strong with no oil burning at all. The Brake calipers failure on these 4runner are fucking crazy ridiculous 😤... Lose of brake power is a issue constantly. Always end up about two-three times in the mechanic shop every year to have the entire system fully brake flush out that seem to be the only way to help.

Is to the point that I just got use to driving it like that now. I took it to Firestone, Tires plus and they all kept recommending to fully flush the break system and that helped for a while. Then I took it to toyota and they just did the same flushing the Break system and that also just helped for a while. I complain to toyota about it that I have had multiple break flush done. Toyota then replace my Master Break and that helped for a while and back to the same problem lose of break power and then over time the break caliper siege up and then I have to replace it again under O'Reilly Warrenty. Is frustrating on this 2006 4Runner I have. Then when I saw this video and this video also say the same thing about the break, I knew it have to be a commen issue then on the 4th gen 4runner. I've been having this problem for 4 years now when I bought it used 4 years ago. Other then that everything else have been pretty good except when that AWD system broke and cost me a lot of money. But I bought it used so I expected for it not to be in perfect shape. But other then that is a good car the engine and transmission have been bullet proof.

I own a 2007 v6 sport edition. Decent truck but the plastic bumpers are ridiculous. Any vehicle (most vehicles) with weak bumpers that can be crushed like an eggshell are practically useless if you actually bump into anything. Metal bumpers that are built into the frame add extra weight but will last a lifetime.

Toyota has no plans to recall the 4runner, with all the complaints made with this vehicle. Apart from the problems that you have listed, there's another major problem with this vehicle, engine head gasket failure. It cost me $2,400 to replace the head gasket, and it could cost more in some other places.

They are a amazing format it comes with a factory center lick diff I did upgraded Axel's and then ARB air lockers now she is technically a tripple locked truck had onboard air compressor now as well for lockers and airing up and down
