For anyone watching this in 2023. Instead of trying to loosen the bolts on the crossmember and risk breaking them. Put a wrench on the bolt side and take the nut off of the other side. Once you get the nut off hit the bolt with a hammer and it will back out easily. Also pro tip if you take the intake off the top of the engine you can easily reach the top 4 housing bolts from the engine bay then you just gotta do the sides and bottom housing bolts. Don't unplug your starter unless you plan on un hooking your battery first just take two bolts out and hang it to the side and you can get to your torque converter nuts there should be 4 nuts. Youll have to get a good sized ratchet or breaker bar and i believe the crank pulley bolt is a 18mm.

There is nothing more important when installing a auto tranny than to really pay attention to whats going on with the converter and the spacing and all that stuff, you can really mess things up in a hurry,i have installed a few motors in my time and as ive gotten older i realized how lucky i have been, i got a brand new motor siting here at home i will be installing in October (too hot right now) and i decided to do a lot of studying on how to go about it and all that, i dont wanna be that guy thats on his fifth installation and hoping and praying "it will work this time" lol Im doing a custom thing thats why im adamant about being careful, you know your stuff well but i put this up for other people as i am learning all this myself. I used to think that all you had to do with any motor was put that tranny bellhousing to the engine, tighten everything up and you were done when in reality you need to make sure that converter is "seated" properly on the pump or you will have major problems, you gotta make sure if you are doing a custom project you have the correct flexplate (this is a really common mistake people make with disastrous consequences), gotta make sure you put sealer on your flexplate bolts and a few other things, not trying to scare anyone but you just have to be careful and pay attention and not be on your 8th beer when you do this,preferable sober ha ha ha ha Great video man,very detailed,interesting how the access point is thru the starter, most trannys ive seen have a inspection plate on bottom where you would conduct all that business but every model is different,whatever works is my motto,you are pretty brave to do this all by yourself but Ive done it too, sometimes there is no help available.

Hey I'm having an issue and I'm hoping you might possibly be able to help me, I am replacing a motor on a 2008 Explorer and I'm afraid the torque converter isn't fully seated into the transmission. the converter to flex plate studs are flush with the bell housing but the center piece of the converter sticks past the side of the bell housing by about an inch do you happen to remember if this was the case with yours? At around 27:00 into the video you show taking it apart and at first in the video it looks further recessed but then a few seconds later it looks like the studs are flush with the edge of the bell housing. Any information from you or anybody else would be greatly appreciated.
@FixingWithPassion6 жыл бұрын
Well when you tighten the torque converter bolts it will move 1/2 or so. So there is some wiggle room. Just spin it and see if it feels ok.
@cavalier_ranch6 жыл бұрын
I finally figured it out, the smallest splined shaft that comes out of the transmission must have gotten pulled out a bit and somehow it gets jammed and doesn't go back in. I found the solution here: www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/torque-converter-install-problems.274525/ its a different year but same transmission. I spent 2 days putting the engine in and out because of this. If you have a way to pin this response or link to that forum it might be helpful to someone else in the future. Thanks for your help!

Great video! No idea how you manage to stay productive under there and still get the good shots. Question for you, I'm in the middle of an engine swap on a 5.4l F150 and I'm struggling with the top 2 bolts on the engine to bell housing. Planning on getting some clearance and coming at it with the extension, but I'm wondering if I should plan on both cross members coming off or if I can get enough wiggle with one or the other. Any advice from your experience?

Cross members have to come out. I dropped the back of the tranny some to get some room for the two top bolts.....Tow top bolts....long extensions. Took a while but I made sure they broke free first then took them out.

Old? I traded my 2003 Sport Trac 4.0 when it had 249,000 miles on it. It ran perfect, never leaked a drop of fluid, and the transmission certainly didn't have a problem either even though I'd haulded heavy trailers (3,000 lbs) thousands of miles. I only traded it because I had moved to a location where it snowed, and I needed 4WD or AWD, and my Sport Trac was only 2 WD.

did you take the top bolts out through the back or the side?
@FixingWithPassion6 жыл бұрын
Back side. I had to reach up with extensions to the top....way...........up there!I probably had a 2 foot extension on my ratchet (1/2) which worked better... Don't even try a 3/8.
@dre04mach6 жыл бұрын
Finally got the damn thing swapped. You're right, 3/8s didn't have the strength to break that loose and I fear I would have broken the universal joint had I put a pipe on the ratchet. The amount of extensions needed made me want to go buy a single piece 2 ft extension - in 1/2 in - because of the slop inherent to using 5 extensions... On the other hand, the other difference I saw from your video, I had no access hole by the starter to take those bolts off, mine was on the driver side of the car, covered by a rubber plug. - This is in a 2004 Lincoln Aviator. Last but not least, the aviator has a ton of extra insulation, that eats into the space you have... I did this on my lift... the fact that you did it on your back on the ground... my hat's off to you sir! :-)

Many thanks sir! Question - did you replace the transmission cooler/radiator, or did you just flush it? I'm ready to pull and fix or rebuild my 2004 5R55S from an Eddie Bauer with 111K miles. It's leaking at the front of the case. All was working fine, saw smoke from the engine bay, saw oil leaking from around the valve covers, but that was a head-fake because the trannie started slipping and saw red fluid (foamy-grey) puddling under the vehicle. Ugh... Now reverse is gone. I'd like to know how low the fluid is - but no - no dipstick! This thing has more sensors than a space shuttle, but no dipstick.I have a Ford Shop Manual - best $35 ever spent on eBay. I've pulled a transmission before - like a 100 years ago (well, in '82). My '72 Nova needed a new trannie. By myself in 1/2 day, I dropped it, took it to the local salvage, gave them $75 and my old one for one from the yard, bolted it in and all was well... I have a feeling this won't be the same experience.

Your trans obviously had some hard part failure that you could detect before removal... Mine, is just the missing 2nd/OD (servo bore / bands)... Other than those, everything works quiet and smooth. Fluid pretty dark, though. QUESTION... Did you replace torque converter. I've priced my stuff and sure would like to not have to spend extra $200 if not absolutely needed... But, don't wanna destroy my rebuilt unit. What's the real story on torque converter replace? Thanks again, and hope your holidays are great!

on taking out the transmission , you may save yourself some work leaving the torque convertor bolted fast, just take the bolts out of the bell housing and pull it off, the trans. the torque convertor fits into the shaft on the trans. when you reinstall it you can shift it to drive and turn the out put shaft of the trans to click it into the torque convertor, unless you are going to replace it too, but good video , also when you reinstall the bolts you may want to put on some what they call "antiseize", a graphite compound, in case you needed to know. Dont feel bad , i am in the process of pulling out my 4R55E from my explorer, when i seen your metal in your pan, , wow, i can put mine in gear , but it won't move unless i rev it up but , it doesn't do that anymore, i'm figuring as i talked with the AAMOCO guy today, the bands are possibly burnt up , mercy knows about yours!! He said will if you can get it shifted then thats a mechanical issue, since the components need fluid pressure to operate, the bands needs pressure, who knows, maybe there is trash in the valve body keeping the pressure from building, its a thought. I hope you are aware of the servo valve shafts where Ford had made the shafts of the servos hard steel that wear out the ports they slide in , they have a special replacement for these, mine seem to be ok.

by the way your video is the only one I found about the 4R55E transmission

I got a good one for you. after I took the pump out, I only found one servo strut from the servo side from the od band. the adjuster side strut was gone. got any ideas of where it might be?
@FixingWithPassion8 жыл бұрын
Its got to be in there somewhere. You check the pan?
@FixingWithPassion8 жыл бұрын
Hey how did you get that your pump out?

I need to repair my transmission wiring harness. The wire broke at speed sensor. Can not get hands up there to repair so I think i need to remove harness to splice broken wire. How can you remove harness without removing transmission? It looked like harness was bolted to trans at top. Any ideas?
@FixingWithPassion8 жыл бұрын
Somehow, your going to have to get your hand up there. I don't think that harenss is bolted. Maybe there is a snap holding it. If you can get a mechenics (a little one for $8) mirror and light and look up there. That might help you to see whats going on.

Can you list the material you used to finish this job and from where do we buy them

Did you have to run any computer "learning" updates after installing?
@FixingWithPassion7 жыл бұрын
No. I just dove it normally and the computer adjusted to my driving habits. ;)

Would a 2005 Explorer have the same transmission problems? The one we have has been well maintained.

10-4 back door....yeppers....

TVWXMAN32 Okay. It has 99 thousand plus miles. Is there a typical time frame for when it fails or?

Is it easier to do these on a 2003 explorer 4.6?

Same.

do you have to remove the engine mounts to remove the transmission for an explorer sport Trac.
@FixingWithPassion8 жыл бұрын
I don't think so.

I am in the process of removing mine but it does not come down low enough to remove the top bolts.
@timelesskoontah8 жыл бұрын
so I am stuck right there lol
@FixingWithPassion8 жыл бұрын
I think I tilted the transmission down to get a room for the top bolts. Did you do that?
@timelesskoontah8 жыл бұрын
yes I did but the engine mounts is not allowing enough tilt.

hair off topic but i'm stuck with a 4.0L auto mustang torn apart and cant find an answer anywhere, hope you can help. pulled engine and trans for timing chain replacement, converter, flex plate and engine have all been turned and weren't marked properly (no idea exact location of direction when removed). does it matter how the converter/plex plate and crank are turned when put together (will it shake if exact bolt holes aren't reused)? balance question really. thanks in advance. -jeremy

NA probably not. I always use the same bolts. Now on the 2002 explorers and up....yea...its a different story....for a nother time.

Is this the same transmission that’s in a 96 Ford Explorer? Pretty sure mine needs replaced. It’s gonna cost so I don’t know if it’s worth it.
@jessiekramer44896 жыл бұрын
how much did it cost you? I'm putting one in mine in two weeks just want to get a basic price...
@FixingWithPassion6 жыл бұрын
What cost?

How much did all the parts cost you I was looking at AutoZone you can buy a 2003 Ford Explorer transmission for like 1800 and then you get like 500 back for core
@FixingWithPassion6 жыл бұрын
That's a good deal! My parts was maybe $150.00. But my labor is free...so it was nice to have it done in a short time span.
@matthatter11126 жыл бұрын
Nathan Rohrbough Wait, your replacement transmission only costed you 150 dollars!?!
@FixingWithPassion6 жыл бұрын
Yes! Just a few hard parts and my work (free).

Nathan Rohrbough That's insane!! You must have awesome scrap yards in your area!

No, actually I got most of my parts on e-bay! lol

I have Forward Forward Planetary Carrier 6 pinion that while pulling out of case the needle bearings fell apart. By looking at one side of the race that stayed connected to the Planetary Gear bore, it looks the race is staked by the OD. Does that mean I have to buy the whole Forward Planetary Carrier 6 pinion or can I just buy the bearing?
@FixingWithPassion7 жыл бұрын
You might be able to get just a bearing....but it might be better just to get the entire unit. Go on e-bay...and look for parts you need. Tons of tranny parts cheep! I go there ll the time ;)
@marklammers46157 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Kind of a shame when all of the parts that mate with the Forward Planetary and the gears look so good. I did find one for $27 and ordered it. Probably a good price considering I might have a heck of a time finding just the thrust bearing. I'm also getting a new Over Drive Drum and OD Planetary Gear Set. OD band had no friction material at all and completely burned up the Over Drive Drum and OD Planetary Gear Set. Also, took out some teeth.
@FixingWithPassion7 жыл бұрын
Yep...I had to do the same thing...bearings are mated to the plant. Good deal!!

Maybe you are still watching this video,,, my wife’s 2005 transmission had a problem recently, something about solenoid inside the transmission. Is it a good choice to change that and will it be reliable.
@Markusbjj55 жыл бұрын
William Coley change out the transmission I did that and only lasted maybe a year I’m changing out the transmission

Maybe in your next video you should tell what size motor you have..I was looking for videos for a 97 explorer..4.0 liter..yes I am aware procedure is same v8 or v6...BUT....trying to look for something SPECIFIC...LIKE TORQUE CONVERTOR NUTS..OLD C4 AMD C6 TRANNIES DIDNT ALLOW YOU TO GO THRU THE STARTER HOLE TO ACCESS THE CONVERTOR NUTS..
@braxtonschlauger35887 жыл бұрын
I've got all the bolts out from the bell housing and the nuts on the flywheel/flexplate but the transmission still won't budge do I need to just pry it harder towards the rear???
@FixingWithPassion7 жыл бұрын
Yes...That's what I had to do. And shake it maybe just a little. When it starts to go....go slowly.... Make sure its propped up! I don't want you to get hurt! Good luck!
@braxtonschlauger35887 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the fast response really appreciate it I was missing a bolt at the very top I got it now ! Great video!
