Fun fact: Royler’s canp went over to Leo (who was itching for a rematch with Royler) and said to him “you can’t let this gringo win.” Leo told me that basically he knew he had to annihilate Eddie or else. He has a ton of respect for Eddie these days, but that’s why it seems he has a little extra animosity in this match.

All respect to Eddie and 10th Planet though. He is a savage and an innovator. I think strength, athleticism, and experience played a big part in Viera’s success here. I remember Eddie and Joe Rogan even goofing on this match on Joe’s podcast. That is a valiant effort! 🤘🏽

Eddie's style isn't meant for point jiu-jitsu. He openly talks about giving up dominant positions because he know he won't get subbed. Like lots of the Gracies, he supports jiu-jitsu formats until sub, stoppage or forfeit. Thought he had something going at the end in rubber guard, but maybe then the position wasn't as understood even by him. The way he just gave up sweeps demonstrated him transitioning out of the linear BJJ positions/control-based approach. Quite the contrast of styles.

@@chrisjohannes179 yep all true plus just the post adrenaline of beating a Gracie. At that time Royler Gracie was considered god in bjj. He was simply unbeatable and a living legend. The idea that an unknown American could win a match against royler Gracie was not even plausible and then Eddie went out and not only beat him but tapped him out?? The emotional rush and waves must have been crazy. There’s some footage of him backstage right after the match with royler and he’s literally freaking out going manic and bouncing between euphoria and exhaustion. That’s not an excuse for him getting handled by Leo and the truth is I’m not really an Eddie bravo fan so I wouldn’t be on here defending him, but this win was like the USA beating Russia in 1980 Olympic hockey match. Simply unimaginable at the time. I’m sure for all intents and purposes his mind was o longer focused on the next match.

Leo Viera is just much better then Bravo and had the perfect gameplan and was super smart. But no shame in that. Viera is like one of the best ever. Still insane Bravo became legit world class basically making up new techniques. For me both can be true. Leo Viera is just striaght up better then Bravo. But also Bravo is insanely good and an incredible innovator - for a not athletic ( by adcc level standards) guy to invent tons of new stuff and use it at world class level is absolutely insane. Eddie Bravo is world class which is awesome! And Leo viera is all time great.

Eddie's claim to fame is his win over one of if the not the best technical Jiu-Jitsu fighters that ever graced the mat. Royler Gracie. Not just that Eddie beat a Gracie, he beat the Gracie that is pound for pound one of the greatest Jiu-Jitsu players that ever lived. Royler Gracie is a legend and his resume before this fight will back me up. However, Eddie got the win but the guy he's fighting is another Legend. Leo Viera , student of the original Jacare. Leo is a multiple World Champion and was the hottest thing out in 2003. Where Royler played in Eddie's guard, Leo went around it and schooled Eddie, Eddie never fought in ADCC again after his win over Royler and his spanking by Leo.............Leo makes this look easssy because Leo was one of the smartest players ever. Eddie was a beast for beating Royler but Leo was just too knowledgeable with his game. And to show you how great Leo was. EDDIE BRAVO NEVER CHALLENGED LEO TO A REMATCH. EDDIE BEAT ROYLER AND THEN FOUGHT HIM AGAIN, BUT EDDIE NEVER TALKED SHIT ABOUT LEO NOR DID HE EVER WANT A REMATCH. THAT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT LEO'S SKILL SET. EDDIE FOUGHT TWO GODS THAT DAY AND CAME OUT EVEN 1-1. SHIT THAT AIN'T BAD!

What people need to also remember is this, in a real fight Eddy would loose ten out of ten, because he is always in bottom and would take many blows, this guy would beat Eddy senseless and so would RC, if blows were allowed then Eddy would eat them every time due to his style, which is strange seen as he raves about helping ufc fighters lol

How I see it. We all know concealing ones strengths and weaknesses is beneficial. Eddie here was a nobody until he subbed Royler. Leo had the advantage of facing Eddie after Royler match. He didn’t underestimate him. Which I believe Royler did. I’m sure Royler thought, ok a brown belt. What’s his name again? Cool I got an easy match before the finals. I believe if Eddie would’ve faced Leo first he could have surprised him just as he did Royler. Then Royler would have took notice. Eddie is something special. And Eddie vs Royler 2 proved it! The guy has mad skills. Just because he didn’t go on competing means nothing. John Danaher has never competed and everyone acknowledges what a genius he is. And he has evolved quite a bit since then. Mad respect
@smesh141

That triangle from Eddie wasn't anything special, Royler just got caught, that's all. I'm pretty sure at that time Royler would win at least 8 of 10 matches against Eddie and Leo 10 out of 10. Rematch against Royler was of course diffrent and Royler was destroyed.

So true. One of the girls I roll with is a whole belt ahead of me & has an insatiable appetite for arm bars. I roll with her a lot different than anyone else. With her, I keep my arms short, do a lot of progressive crawling with them & keep them near my head also. I cant just grab out a lot of times like I do with most of the other people. However, we wear gis & I wonder if her arm bar game would be as strong without gis.

What I have learned so far from Eddie's game is that a no point system favors him. Similar to my analysis of Rocky Marciano, who would beat anybody in the world if there were an unlimited number of rounds as he could outlast anyone. The best fighters in the world, in my opinion, are those that adapt to the rules better and have made their skill around those rules. The problem with Eddie is that he did what Bruce Lee did, create his own system! For some people, the rules of a particular combat sport limit their natural game, and especially true for innovators, IMO!

I think that Leo Vieira is 10x better than Eddie Bravo. He is way more talented than him.

It looks like the guy is afraid of Eddie lol. Running away from any real grappling and just after points. Looks like Eddie is more interested in actually rolling.

Yeah, that's why he spent literally the entire match making him look like a white belt. Hate to break it to you, but no rule set, points or otherwise, would help Eddie in any way against Leo, who is quite simply miles ahead of Eddie.

Funny how thanks to Joe Rogan Eddie is a household name when really his achievements aren't all that, I mean he gets MURKED here but this video rarely gets shown just the one where he subbed Gracie.

+ii iaa i used to think that too before i started training. i used to think ufc fights when they went to the ground were so damn boring. ive been training bjj in gi and no-gi now for about 2 years and im so hooked. its just so intricate and theres a LOT of little shit going on that you wouldnt even think would make a difference. it literally is a game of centimeters, a fullbody chess match.. i guess you can say that i grew the eyes for the sport and now im stinkin addict
