Yes. Definitely in 2008 when the BCS handed Florida the title. That USC defense would have made Tebow and Harvin look extremely basic. I also think they were the best team in 2006. I believe they were the 2nd best team in 2002, but Miami probably would have won it all if there was a playoff system.

In my opinion, both teams in the "Rose Bowl East" that year were the best in the nation. Had Iowa not lost to Iowa State, they could have played Miami and won a national championship and left Ohio State to be mauled by USC. On the other hand, had USC not lost either of those two games, they could have downgraded Miami to Tropical Storms. That's just my opinion, though. I could be 100% wrong, and sadly, we'll never have any way of knowing, but it's fun to think about.

Iowa had a great team, their offense was sporadic and that just wore their defense down. I'm a long time USC fan and I saw banks having problems starting in the 3rd quarter

Winning this game the way they didn't meant a lot for this senior class. These guys had been psychologically debilated from the Paul Hackett years. It took Pete Carroll two seasons to get them believing in themselves. I remember them saying, 'We will play anyone, anytime, anywhere.' That's how confident they were. Iowa was a very worthy opponent and they played well through the first half. I think the penalties killed some scoring opportunities that would have made this game a lot closer. This was the beginning of the Carroll dynasty.

Same thing is happening now with Clay Helton....he is horrible will take a long time for SC to recover from his awful coaching.....Can't believe he has not been fired two years ago he is just doing more damage.

I remember watching the opening kick as a 5 year old, I’m glad I wasn’t old enough to remember the rest because I would’ve been screaming with the penalties, turnovers and missed opportunities. I think it was Fred Barr that said Iowa treated the game prep like a party, you could tell on the field lol

Iowa should have been up 24-10 at halftime. I’ve never seen a more one sided called game than that. The refs literally took 10 points away from Iowa. And they also lost a fumble on another drive that was looking good.

This year (and 2004) were the last years that USC had great offensive and defensive lines at the same time. Carson Palmer with mobility, it's unfortunate that the Bengals ruined him in the years to come. Mike Williams made some bad decisions after this game... oh, what could have been. Norm Chow hit his stride. Iowa was really good, crazy that their team averaged 39 points that season. It would have been good for the Big 10 if that continued.

No, just an undisciplined Iowa team, that’s offsides half the time. Also too many false starts. Those are easy basic calls for the refs.

Iowa hung in there. The refs were horrible. And no. I’m not a Hawkeye fan. The refs took away a TD for Iowa when they had it at the 1. And they caused Iowa to punt on another drive with a phantom holding call when they just had a huge run. Also Iowa lost another drive when they fumbled after a big run. And the drive at the end of the half they cost Iowa a FG with terrible false start calls. Iowa should have been winning at least 20-10 at halftime. That’s probably the worst called first half I’ve ever seen.
