Russians were not allowed to listen to The Beatles in the Red Square during the 1980s. Vladimir Putin stated that The Beatles were widely listened to in the Soviet Union back in the day, despite the disapproval of officials. In fact, Putin himself is a massive Beatles fan. That is the power of music and its ability to put anyone on the same level playing field. When we think of Putin as a guy who just likes The Beatles, we instantly demystify him; he is no longer the anti-humanist authoritarian leader and ex-KGB agent. This is a testament to the universal language of music.
In 2003, Russian leader Putin was partially responsible for getting Paul McCartney to the country in order to perform in the Red Square - marking the milestone as the first Beatle to do so. Along the lines of the power and universality of music - Russian musician, Sasha Lipnitsky, said that The Beatles were the “first hole in the iron curtain.”
In the Soviet Union, when Western music was banned and music, in general, was heavily regulated, Russians would go to extreme lengths to obtain records that were cleverly copied onto x-ray film.
When Macca played the momentous concert in the Red Square in Moscow, one can imagine what it might have been like to witness the ex-Beatle rocker crash into ‘Back in The U.S.S.R’ to 20 thousand people. Macca wrote the song in 1968, and it was based on Chuck Berry’s ‘Back in the U.S.A’.
As serious as McCartney took his first-ever performance in Moscow in a show of love of all, regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality; ‘Back in the U.S.S.R’ was a bit of a parody of the Chuck Berry song. “I just liked the idea of Georgia girls and talking about places like Ukraine as if they were California, you know? It was also hands across the water, which I’m still conscious of. ‘Cause they like us out there [in Soviet Russia], even though the bosses in the Kremlin may not,” Macca said about the song.

@@donaldcarpenter5328 Firstly, those lyrics were written by John who always admitted he treated women badly, and not Paul (though it was Paul's song, but John provided that line), and secondly, HM was a gold digger, everyone could see it but Paul, it seems. And perhaps you. She claimed for £125m during the divorce. In his final judgement, Mr Justice Bennett said he found that her evidence was, "not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid." He added: "Overall she was a less than impressive witness." The court ruled in Paul's favour, awarding Heather £24.3m. Paul insisted on the full judgement being released to the press, despite Heather's attempts to stop it.

I’ve been a Beatles fan for many decades and Paul was always my favorite. I’ve also admired the Russian and Ukrainian people for many years. I’ve visited both countries and also specifically St. Petersburg, Russia 🇷🇺 They are both beautiful countries with beautiful people and cultures. It’s a shame what is going on there presently. I think Paul McCartney always means well. He is incredibly approachable and level headed. It’s a shame that he cannot go anywhere on this planet and not be criticized one way or another just because he showed up. Seeing him here, with his former wife, it’s apparent that he loved her very much but she was just a bit too aggressive a person who refused to be in his shadow. I’m wondering what happened to the rest of this video. Thanks for sharing

I'm sure Paul had a great time, and met a lot of good people who were delighted with and appreciated his presence and music in Russia. However, it is possible to pull the wool over even Paul McCartney's eyes - a certain lady accompanying him to Russia at the time made that quite clear. And while I don't doubt that Paul and Vladimir shared working-class origins, the direction Putin took in his rise to power has been immensely different from Paul's. A career in the KGB prior to becoming Russia's CEO is quite different from rocking in the Cavern, recording in London and being a part of arguably the biggest band of the 20th century, along with being one of its most prolific songwriters. Putin can most certainly be a charming host when he wants to be, though, and he didn't do a bad job singing "Blueberry Hill", either. You would almost think he actually isn't a cruel, ruthless dictator. who is responsible for many atrocities.

Strangely you have the sides swapped in who is rotten and evil in your comment. The British going back hundreds of years up until today are the biggest warmongers and war criminals on earth. Now May 2023 provided long range cruise missiles that are being used solely on civilians in the Donbass and not for fighting soldiers. Pual might not be as bad as the rest from his home country but his being British makes Putin look like an angel in comparison. The west has shown the whole world now their imperialistic colonial sides that they don’t even try to hide any more. Russia fights for survival while the West fights for money and politics. Too bad most westerns are ignorant and live in echo chambers because they destroy the world for the rest of us that actually have something positive to offer.
