2003 U.S. Open Film: "Furyk's Olympia Fields of Dreams"

Jim Furyk shot 8-under-par 272 to tie what was then the U.S. Open scoring record. Furyk defeated Stephen Leaney by three strokes at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club for his first major title.

Jim Fuyrk stayed in my home town during the Open, when he got home to the house the PGA rents for golfers, the neighbors put up a sign “the party’s this way” with an arrow. He put his kids to bed and stopped by for a Rolling Rock beer. True story 😄

I worked this tournament as a USGA volunteer. Followed Jim Furyk that last round picking up the water coolers at each hole after he teed off. It was amazing to watch his composure and focus. A truly great champion. Funny note: The USGA was pretty pissed at the low scores of the first two rounds so the word got out to make the course harder for the weekend. And that they did. I reported to the course early on Saturday and Sunday just to walk around and see what they were doing to make it harder. They had these little tractors that looked like miniature steam rollers that were busy rolling and pressing the greens to make they faster. A guy would roll a green with one of those and then a team of other guys would bring out the stimpmeters and measure. If the stimpmeter was below 13, they would call out the guy with the mini steam roller and they would roll it again. Crazy fast greens that weekend.

The US Open is, no doubt, the ultimate test of a golfers skills, and maybe, most importantly, patience. Of course there might be a tiny bit of luck thrown in occasionally, but, from all I have seen, the US Open is just "Brutal". Some golfers have called the course setups, Unfair", but they fail to notice that everyone else is having to negotiate that same "Unfair" course. The successful ones just take whatever the course dishes out, and try to minimize the mistakes that inevitably creep into any golfers bag. I will always love watching this tournament, and those golfers who go beyond the norm to achieve victory.

It proved itself at this Us Open. Only 4 guys finished under par after record breaking scores in the first two rounds. Olympia Fields can change in one day with some wind and firmer conditions.
