Three years after his first U.S. Open victory, Retief Goosen played in the final group with fellow South African Ernie Els. While Els quickly fell out of contention, Goosen held off a charge from Phil Mickelson at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

And this tournament also made mini U.S. Open legends 4 out of 8 amateurs made the cut tom kite the only senior golfer who had won a U.S Open (1992) also made the cut along with the golfer who is now a PGA club pro
