TRUE. They made the parts out of garbage and charge exorbitant replacement prices. Interior door panels $800 each from VW!!! They made garbage and then charge a fortune to replace the part when it breaks.

Great video, but one correction would be that the Dorman whole fan assembly you are showing and used is only for Beetle models with a 3-pin connector 2 speed fan for the larger driver side cooling fan. VW also used a 4-pin 3-speed model which is not made by Dorman or any company that sells the complete 2 fan assemblies. The 4-pin was used on most 1.8L Turbo models and some models sold in warmer climates. VW was all over the map with the 3-pin or 4-pin connectors. Most have the 3-pin, but don't be like me and buy the Dorman assembly only to get it all out and realize it is a 4-pin fan. Get underneath and check your connectors first.

I just had mine replace this weekend. 2001 2.0 L GLS Manual🚙...paid $100 labor purchased online/ebay $100 plus tax. The labor was considered "cheap" compared to the other shop who's been wanting $600 and I just wouldn't pay it. Glad I didn't. I believe it took them about 2 hrs to complete...plus they did an oil change. Beautiful Bugs btw.

Why go through the work of removing the fan shrowd unit if you already pulled out both fans? Leave the assembly in and put your new fans into it. Looks like that will save a lot of time and hassles.

I used an aftermarket fan assembly and if I remember correctly it was made a little different and I don’t think the aftermarket fans would fit into the original shroud.

When you installed the new fan assembly, did you install it as one complete part or did you break it down and install in pieces like you did when you took the out the old one?
@randytempleton57973 жыл бұрын
I broke it down. You might read all of the comments. One person said he removed the assembly without breaking it down. There is another comment about the connectors having different numbers of pins for different models.

Great video...thank you. Just did replaced the fan assembly on a 2004 2.0L GLS convertible. It was a tight squeeze both out with the old one and in with the new one, but didn't need to remove the fans or the brackets from the assembly. Bought a VDO replacement part and everything (including the wiring harness) fit perfectly. There's another video on KZbin showing the same job and it was very helpful as well.

Scott B Ok. Thanks! Like I said I looked at it and didn’t think the assembly would come out in one piece. I’ll try that next time.
