I'm sick to my stomach. My 2008 Acura TL is right now in the process of having the steering rack replaced and ALL of the low pressure and high pressure lines, every one of them. The steering rack did not fail me, but the lines are all corroded from salt, living here in Nova Scotia, Canada, the salt eats our cars up hard. My GREAT backyard mechanic said that since the car has 198,000kms on her, I might as well buy a new rack because the lines come with the new rack anyways, to a point. . . so I agreed. The problem is, I called Acura here ans priced just the steering rack and it's $950.00 Canadian plus 15% tax and I would have to wait for it. The local Parts Source Store here in town had 2 in stock called " CARDONE", and it came with the high pressure lines ....BUT, I went online a few hours ago and all I found were 50% bad reviews that people had installed the " remanufactured" units and then within 6 months, had the rack seals blow out of them ! Jesus, 70 % of the cost of changing your rack is the labour. My mechanic said the subframe has to be lowered, the exhaust has to be removed, it's not a small job at all. One GOOD thing is, I had a small oil pan leak for 3 years now, but since the subframe is dropped, I got my mechanic to drop the pan and re-seal it, so no more spots on my new driveway. I couldn't believe that the car would empty a 28 dollar bottle of power steering fluid in 20 minutes of driving, until I looked in my service manual and read that the power steering system's high pressure side runs at 251 psi. I'm a high pressure pipe welder for 40 years, I know that is high for 3/8th lines to handle when they are all rusted.

How did you get the steering shaft lose from the steering box? I removed the 10mm bolt but it doesn't want to let go of the shaft?

It would only stop leaks potentially. If it’s creaking and popping chances are something might already be damaged inside

It's a different body style so the exact steps might vary. You can try to find a repair manual for your car online and that will give you the exact steps to take. Good luck!

What size is the mounting bolts going into the subframe? My acura tl is missing a bolt and i need to find a replacement

Hard to give you a size without knowing exactly which bolt it is. What you can do is check online (I've used acurapartswarehouse DOT com) to get a better idea of which bolt you need. You also take a picture of the general area and go to the dealer and they can pin point it. Otherwise the main bolts that hold it in are 17mm and the ones on the side are 14mm. In the rear part of the front subframe there might be a couple 14mm bolts too but i dont exactly remember. Hope any of this helps!

Hey I had a 2008 teal and I'm an Acura technician now for 10 years master. Don't want to offend you but you're not supposed to use a hammer to knock those off you're supposed to use a specialized tool to take the ball joint out of your tire rod ends. And the definition of what you just hit is a brake shield the house with dust and heat that's the biggest thing why it there is for heat. And if you read Acura.'s procedure to change the power steering rack. you actually supposed to drop the sub frame the correct way access to the power steering rack and pinion. If you use an engine and transmission cradle you don't have to worry about your engine drop out.

Yea i know about the fork....It's just some bad habits that i need to overcome :) And lowering the sub frame is a just a short cut. I know the manual us dummy proof but again just a short cut. I probably should add a disclaimer for people though. Thanks for the watch!

Do you recommend to reseal the rack rather than buying one? Wouldn't it last longer since it will be resealed with oem seals?

​@@balkee42I hope that works out. People don't seem to realize there are no viable options besides genuine on these cars. I almost exclusively use OE/OEM stuff on my Benz, because it actually exists but for Honda there is no such thing for 90% of these components. Honda seemingly makes everything, & none of it is cheap.

Either one works to be honest. As long as it doesn't leak when you have it all together is the main concern. I know aftermarket ones are a bit cheaper and they do the same job. Hope this helps :)

The rack was rebuilt by ICP which only sells through dealers i believe in my area. A bit pricier to easy online racks but the quality is similar to OEM (original equipment manufacturer). Still cheaper than one rebuilt from acura though. Hope this helps.

hey bro , why did you change the rack? I have a acura tl 2005 and after the lower ball joint poped out on me, my power steering stopped working. I thought i dammaged the steering pump soo i replaced that but the power steering still does not work. Now i'm thinking it must have cracked something in the rack blocking the fluid flow. What do you think?

I googled it real quick and it says between $400-$600 is fair labor price for this which sounds about right. You still need an alignment when this job is performed to prevent uneven tire wear and a straight steering wheel. You can call different shops/dealers in your area and go from there. Hope this helps
