Mark! This was such a fun video to be a part of and I'm so happy I made the trek out to you. It didn't make the final cut, but I'll say it here for posterity: your channel was one of the main reasons I bought a 182 in the first place. Would love to hop on that podcast with you sometime soon. And you totally dorked up my last name in the intro, btw. 🤣

It's a really good pairing and it will push you back in your seat on takeoff! Also, with the turbo, on high density altitude days in the deserts and mountains, it really shines and just loves to climb. Across many flight conditions, Vy will do 1,000fpm or better.

I heard that TIT can increase with engine runs on the ground and that it’s best to just shut it down after descent and landing. No cool down needed
@skywagonuniversity50235 ай бұрын
From AOPA: "Also, you must give the turbocharger time to cool slowly after landing. Remember, the turbocharger turbine and impeller wheels spin rapidly and are lubricated by engine oil. If you shut down the engine, which cuts the supply of lubricating oil before the turbocharger can slow and cool down, the result may be premature bearing failure."
@mannypuerta50865 ай бұрын
@@skywagonuniversity5023 From George Braly (of GAMI fame) within a John Deakin, Pelican’s Perch article on operating turbocharged aircraft engines: “We know of one operator of a turbo twin Cessna. He owned the aircraft for 15 years before the issue of "turbo cool down" ever showed up in the aviation literature. Through three full TBO runs, with almost no premature engine or turbo problems, this operator would routinely land at his uncontrolled airport, turn off at mid-field, taxi about 100 yards, and immediately shut down both engines. The aircraft was then promptly pushed into a T-hangar, where it could not benefit from any natural wind for a further cool down. These would have been ideal conditions to promote problems with turbochargers not being properly allowed to cool down, if there was any truth to this OWT. This operator, in more than 8000 engine hours, never experienced any problems with the issue of "coking" a bearing on a turbocharger.” The turbocharger, after flying approach at reduced power, landing and taxi in will be at the coolest temps during the entire flight. Logically, running it on the ground to cool it is the same procedure one uses to warm the oil temp before takeoff. The overwhelming data exists to refute the opinion that a cooldown after a flight is required. An automobile is a different animal that would justify an EGT cooldown period. An airplane, on the other hand, has already accomplished the cooldown cycle during the approach, landing and taxi in. I’m going with the logical and verifiable data from Braly, Deakin and Busch. Let’s all work on eliminating old pilot tales.

Curious ….what is the cruise speed at altitude compared to a normal skylane?
@Dante_Vicino5 ай бұрын
With the turbo, cruise gets a lot better with altitude than I was expecting. At 6,000, I typically see about 154kts true. At 10,000 - 160 kts true. 9/10 times I'm at ~10k as it's really happy there. On a cold day in the flight levels, I've seen 174 (the tailwind that day got me @ 220 kts ground speed haha).

It’s my understanding that those early, non-WAAS G1000’s cannot be upgraded to WAAS receivers, so no LPV approaches. Correct?
@Dante_Vicino5 ай бұрын
There was a Service Bulletin and an all-in-one upgrade kit 'back in the day' (whenever that really was) put out by Textron and Garmin, but from my research it's still doable if you can find the GIA-63W units and the appropriate antennas. I'm looking into doing it now but few avionics shops are really comfy with G1000 surprisingly.
@mannypuerta50865 ай бұрын
@@Dante_Vicino My very experienced avionics shop, when queried by a friend on early G1000 182’s, said to steer clear of them if you need/want WAAS.

It’s only 235hp and turbo charged?? Something sounds off on that. Turbo won’t be hot on landing too. He’s got that wrong. If it were touch and goes mayyyybe. But not after a cruise to decent. Not going to happen.

@@mannypuerta5086 I’d be checking oil and turbo temps. Usually if oil 200 and below and exhaust temps under 450 shut her down.
@tomedgar43755 ай бұрын
Probably a normalized turbo, just keeps the engine at sea level in upper altitudes
@mannypuerta50865 ай бұрын
@@tomedgar4375 Regardless, with the cooldown of lower power in the traffic pattern and taxi in, the cooldown is complete. The longer idle of an additional cooldown sitting at the parking place will contribute to plug fouling unless aggressively leaned. If anything, a prolonged warmup (aggressively leaned to protect the plugs) for oil temp above 100°F would be more advantageous for the engine, particularly when using a single weight oil.
