SOLUTION: Get a nut splitter. They usually are sold in pairs. Take the large one and place it around the sensor. Use a large nut to put between the spike of the splitter and the sensor. Tighten it firm but not hard enough to crush the old sensor. Now you have plenty of area to grab and wiggle back and forth to loosen the sensor. You can also use a ratchet and connect it to the end of the splitter for more leverage. Take your time and it will come out. Use the entire can of Deep Creep or PB blaster. You're going to need all the help you can get.

I have the '06 2500 Sprinter and I put in a new crankshaft sensor. Some other vids say to release the electrical connector try using a small flat blade screw driver at the lower end of the cap connector. This is not correct. No need to contort yourself with a small flat blade. The connector is a pinch type. You take a smaller pliers with a slip joint and squeeze that clip at the far end next to the other end of the connector housing-you can see this raised area as you look from your position under the van using a flash light. The push-squeeze area has raised tread for a good strong finger grip push and off it comes. 185K miles and there was some Chicago rust on the barrel of the sensor that fits into the well hole of the transmission housing. Take the same slip joint pliers and open it for a wide grip and grip the sensor down low were the E8 screw is located. Begin twisting with the pliers and at first it appears not to move; but, it is slightly. If you spray with a lubricant you just may break loose some rust but that can cause buildup on the well and create a tighter fitting of sensor barrel to the well hole. So just keep dry twisting with the pliers in 1/6 turns of the sensor and all of a sudden you are out of there. If you do not wear gloves you can feel the progress as you turn the sensor. No need to turn the sensor 360 degrees; just fractional turns. More than short turns will cause the rust to be displaced to new areas and you'll have full depth rust buildup down in the well hole. If you have done pipe fitting plumbing you use same approach. Sorry you had such a fight. You will notice that the length of the sensor barrel has a number of low rise thin ribs longitudinally. So these ribs can add to the buildup of rust going with full turns. I usually take a file and work those down with one pass over the rubs and wipe the barrel with a slight coating of cup grease-just for fun. You can pull some of the old rust out of the well hole with your little finger. As you twist originally with a dry well hole using the pliers, do work the sensor back down into the hole full depth and this will help to removed rust far down in the hole. Maybe doing this 5 or 6 times as you remove the sensor. Your friends at the dealership would charge 1.5 hr at almost $200/hr and probably $65 for that $30 sensor. Wait until you start rebuilding those front suspension ball joints; save up those swear words for that one.

I had the same issue,. I had the top break off. My solution was I came at it from the top. I took out the cup holder and you can access it from inside the van. Still not a great angle, but better than underneath. Also as I said, mine broke, so my solution was to use a torch and melt the sob. Worked very smoothly.

The bolt that holds the sensor in the trans housing is an E8 Torx.
