2004 Honda Element Full Review | Good, Bad, and Ugly

This was one of my first reviews. My process and professionalism have become better over the past few months. The Element is an extremely reliable vehicle that is perfect for those who love to camp and explore. I really do hope Honda revives it and rectify its shortcomings!

Just a couple of things that you should know about the Element: it is the same drivetrain as the CRV and has the same performance for the same years. The four seats are actually perfect as the middle seat in a car that size is no fun. I traveled with a total of four good sized adult men on a road trip with all the luggage and it was the most comfortable trip any of them had taken. I'm guessing some of the road noise comes from the idiotic low profile tires. Another comment-I was hit in mine at highway speeds (sideswiped by a moron in a sports car) and was spun around. . stayed upright and well-protected. Fixed the car and still driving with 166K on the clock. I've owned nearly 30 vehicles and have kept this one the longest because of the terrific driving qualities, including a tiny turning radius. Keep up your good work. .I'm sure you will prepare better for your next reviews!

I think you're trying to make the Element do too much and I'm not sure you understand its purpose. The "S" in SUV (what does it stand for?) If you guessed "Sport" you'd understand why this is the ultimate SUV. The skylight pops right out and has a bag you put it in for protection. Then you can carry objects that stick out, like lumber or surfboards. Those mats are aftermarket but even so, if you remove them, you can open all the doors and rinse it out with a hose without any worry about damage or electrical problems. So it's meant for heavy outdoor use, where you or your kids or your pets are going to track a lot of sand and mud in and out. The pockets are multipurpose, the ones in the back seat have a curve that holds cups, and the seats themselves have cup holders. The seats not only come out (fairly easily) but they fold up quickly too, giving you room to tote two or three bicycles standing upright or a bunch of 4x8 sheets of plywood. You can even fold one up and leave the other down, then squeeze a bike for each rider in there. The right-back window is big for the driver. It radically reduces the usual blind spot. The left one just matches, I guess. What else could they do? The back of the seat bungies are for clothing, jackets, etc..There are aftermarket tents that are made especially to attach to the rear of the car. Many rack choices, not just from Honda. It's cult-like fans share instructions on KZbin and websites about how to turn it into a camper. It's an inexpensive choice, so it doesn't have sound insulation, hence it can be noisy, but not terribly so. The engine is small and "underpowered" so you get better mileage (20 to 25 mi per gallon town and more on the highway). All of that said, it's a specialty vehicle. It "died" because it had a limited appeal and other manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon, quickly saturating the market. Honda could have kept it going with refinements, as you say, but they chose to focus on their other SUV models. On the other hand, it has a cult following, not unlike that for Volkswagen microbuses. Do a quick search on KZbin for "retrofit" or "mods" and you'll find out just how devoted and creative the cult members are. If you want more seats, sound insulation, etc. that you noticed were missing, you get a different car. But if you want a multipurpose, sports utility vehicle for the physically active, "get out there" lifestyle. the Element is ideal, but it won't be easy to find one because it has a lot of fans and they love their Elements. P.S. I don't know where this fits, but it's interesting to note that it's built on the same chassis as the Honda Civic, and, o yeah, last but not least, it will be available again, with refinements, in 2019. I agree. This vehicle was underrated. When considering the later models ('08-11) that fixed the design flaw in the driver/backseat-entry-dilemma, in addition to increased horsepower, I believe they hit the sweet spot in those final years. One theory for the discontinuation of the Element is that the 2008 financial crisis essentially KILLED the new car market... ESPECIALLY for recreation-themed vehicles built for leisure (FJ cruiser/Element) versus necessity (camry/civic/etc).

the honda element is a camping vehicle. all of these "very strange" options are actually very useful. I am very glad that these vehicles are "ugly" and not a hot item because it makes it much easier and more economical for me to buy one. lol I lost count of how many times you said "strange." It's the perfect camping vehicle.

I just bought an 04 with a blown motor, i plan to build it up special into a camper/overlander, the bodies on these are AMAZING and last FOREVER! 04 WITH 290,000 and not a lick of rot, minimal rust in NEW ENGLAND YO!!! Not to mention parts are cheap, easy to find, and reliable AF!!!!

Amen. I took mine out bumped mileage up 2-3mpg. He didn’t put the seats up because they are HEAVY. Taking them out, brutal. Now I can get anything in the back. I’m a loner but probably not for everyone. My bike fits in no problem. 8ft lumber from Home Depot, no problem.

I Love my Honda Element. I have the same year and color shown in this video and not once have I had any problems with it. I can 3-4 bikes when the seats are up. I can fit a 7-10 yr old go kart in the back (the go kart is pretty big in size). When I go to the drive I put a full size mattress in back. And so easy to clean in the inside.

Loved watching this review. I think you did a great job for someone new to the Element! I have a 2004 Element and am getting ready to part with it, and I’m devastated. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned and would honestly keep it longer if it was automatic. I now have too long of a commute to drive a stick shift everyday in traffic jams. This car has seen us through countless camping trips (the moonroof IS removable and great for stargazing with a glass of wine!), cross country trips, hauling gear, and transporting both our dogs, and foster dogs. Our lab could literally jump from the lake into the car, and we could just wipe the whole thing down without issue! It’s a perfect car for outdoor peeps, and the most dog friendly I’ve ever come across! I actually think I will grieve a bit when I trade it in. Thx again!

Steve/Beth thanks for the advice! I've heard the same thing from several others. It's funny, as I've gone in to test drive the cars I'm choosing from (currently I'm completely on the fence between the new CRV and Suburu Forester), the salesmen that I've worked with really seem to want to get their hands on my Element, and become more excited when they see it's a stick shift. I actually thought that would be a deterrent, nobody seems to drive a stick anymore. It's all I've ever driven... great in the snow (I live in WI!). I'm just 15 miles from hitting 100k! I will celebrate this weekend when it passes that milestone. And then give my baby up. So, when do you want to come grab it? 😉

i would love to do a hidden camera show that captures the dealership telling the owner how undesirable the Element is when they're trading it in, then a couple of days later captures them telling the buyer how in-demand the Element is when they're trying to negotiate (after they've marked it up 5x the trade-in allowance). might be even better if the owner WAS the buyer or their spouse.

@@Straight0uttaCrofton as an update, 2 years later. I did end up trading in my element at the Subaru dealership when I bought my current Forester. They offered me $2200 as a trade in for her, and then had my beloved Element on their website within 48 hours, for $10k. She sold within 2 days. I was livid, and felt incredibly foolish. Lesson learned. People, do NOT trade your element in at a dealership! Sell them outright.

I love my '04 Element but: A. I'm a single person, just me & my dog B. I lived without a car for 12 years so my expectations are low / I'd probably be happy with almost anything 😂 C. I only paid $950 for mine, and spent about $400 to fix it up. So, for that amount of money I'm thrilled with it.

I've owned my identical 04 element for 10 years now and the only use for the ridiculous cargo sunroof is to remove it and easily wax the roof... Love the Bungee seat backs insanely handy! The only problems in 220k miles were normal maintenance and two Alternators. I wouldn't say all his critiques are baseless, the interior is all plastic, but you wouldn't want high end finishes in a vehicle designed to practically hose out (Floor drains would have been a nice addition!). Some sound insulation would have gone a long way and a fifth seat would be handy, but would require a complete redesign. Spring loaded hinges on the seats would be a WELCOME addition, so anyone could put the seats up for cargo storage. This vehicle is way under powered compared to just about all current vehicles, even in 2004... however I would say they gave it just enough power any less and it would be a nuisance. My biggest peeve is by far the durability of the vinyl parts of the seats... if they were made entirely of the cloth in the center areas there would have been no durability issues. Brittle cracked up flaked off vinyl just sucks and I loathe seat covers... I still love it though.

It really is a great road trip car! Fuel mileage is Ok, but could be better for road trips and the fuel capacity isn't much so fuel fill ups are more frequent. I have to say it is very comfortable to drive and I am always surprised how often I am disappointed with driving other vehicles that I thought I would love. I love the size of the Element, the room of the cabin, the extremely tight turning radius. It just feels right. An update to the interior with modern amenities would be welcome and some sound insulation. I always wished that it was more 4x4 capable and upgradable, kinda like the old boxy Jeep Cherokee however, I would buy another one.

I’ve owned 2 Elements and miss driving it daily. Truly functional, versatile and customizable. Never has a car felt more “mine”. The most like an extension of my home. Can’t explain it. I just changed all shocks, some suspension bits and all motor mounts to my 08' I bought 2 years ago. It drives and rides like a new car and in love with it all over again. Also when changing the starter I took off the intake manifold and attempted to clean it. I was shocked. For a car with 160k miles it was practically free of black carbon build up. Highly efficient engine to boot. I've never seen that in any high mileage car before. Amazed.

Bro, the car wasn't designed for speed, aesthetics or luxury, that's what high end sedans are for. That's like me complaining about the S550 not being able to sleep in or carry my motorcycle INSIDE. Because the Element can carry a sports bike inside. These cars are for utility and camping, with the outdoors in mind. It's perfect for snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, camping, etc.

I own a 2003 Element EX with 122k miles. I love it. Nothing else looks like an Element. I'm gonna drive it until the wheels fall off. I do all my own maintenance (fluids, brakes, belts). 1. If you want more power you have to rev over 5000rpm for the VTEC to kick in. Also, if you want quick acceleration you shouldn't be driving an SUV. I think it accelerates just fine for normal driving. 2. The rear seats sit very low to the floor and give very little legroom for adults. Only small kids would like them. 3. Loads of headroom. I'm 6'7" and still have space above my head. 4. Gas mileage is not good, about 20mpg city and maybe 25 highway. 5. Rear seats can fold up to the sides or be removed completely for max cargo space. I use my Element to transport firewood. I recommend the Honda Element Owners' Club site if you want to know anything and everything about it from owners.

there definitely is a niche for a utilitarian boxy vehicle. I normally hate SUVs - I've driven hatchbacks and wagons most of my life - but I just love the element for how boxy and useful it is. It's the only large vehicle I'd ever buy. I wish Honda would bring back the element and change nothing about its size or shape.

I have a 2006 silver element. I find the back doors a little inconvenient but I love mine. It's a front wheel drive automatic with less than 100000 miles on it. I love it's unique look. It's as different as I am lol. Definitely not your average cookie cutter vehicle.

I was reading the comments here and didn't see any comments on the real use of the rear sunroof. There is a camping option you can still buy it for around 4-5K installed it is a camper shell like the VW pop-up campers it works the same way; the highest point is where the sunroof is. The sunroof can be removed and that is how you access the sleeper space above. I saw one in my neighborhood with that camper shell and took down the name and researched it. In 2011 I almost bought one but realized it was due to be discontinued so I didn't; but they had a neat dog friendly option package for the back cargo area, I wish I had kept the sales brochure. Someone gave me a 2004 AWD EX in this color with almost 200K on the odometer, it had died after a road trip from Rhode Island to Palm Springs Calif.; I got it going for about $1500 outlay and am enjoying it. Yes the engine is from an Accord, slow, and gets lousy mileage (high teens around town and low 20's on the highway) definitely not Honda mileage I am used to ! I love my 2006 Element AWD. I purchased it used 2 years ago from one owner with every maintenance record from day one, had immaculate care at Honda and now has 145,000 miles. The biggest downfalls is it uses 1 quart of oil every 900-1000 miles. Yes of course Honda always says that It is normal usage to use 1 quart every 1000 miles. No that is not supposed to be happening, it's a flaw in the way the engine was built. Honda obviously won't own up to it because they'd have to recall them all back and replace engines and won't eat that cost. It occurs in many of them. Windshields crack and leak because of curvature of windshield, common issue. Doorlocks fail, another common issue is the starter ignition fails and that is an expensive fix but common problem. It has a fantastic engine an inline 2.4L.

There was no v6, it started with 2003 model, you shouldn't compare 2004 Honda with 100k to 2018 Lexus, or compare acceleration to brand new V6 Honda Oddysey. Also it wasn't budget vehicle. The one I have from 2006 was more than half of RX in 2006...

The first year of the Element was 2003, not 2001. The plastic was designed for someone like myself wanting an inexpensive utility vehicle that is capable of virtually everything. Remove the rear seats, add a full-length roof rack, a dog, a girlfriend, and you can haul anything and go camping anywhere.

There's no option to turn on cruise control on the steering wheel because Honda actually did their cruise control intelligently. Once switched on, the cruise control stays on until you switch it off, no matter how many times you stop and start the car in between. This is actually really nice because people like me will leave the cruise control on permanently, and only have to set the cruise speed when needed, instead of having to remember to turn the freaking cruise control on every time I drive the car, in order to make it work. The cruise control works like this in all Honda cars since the 1990s, as far as I know.

I like the cruise set up this way as well. My Civic and current Fit are the same way. My 4runner requires turning on and setting. Re-doing it each time you restart. I get it though as a safety feature so you don't accidentally set cruise.

I just brought one. 2003 element and so far I changed the front tires, VPS sensor, and front converter. With a little love and care I’m going to change out radiator, thermostat, belts hoses, etc and she will be as good as new.

I had an 03' and I absolutely loved it. Only major issue I had was having to replace the ball joints a few times which became very expensive. I traded it in on a 2015 CR-V, which I hated at first because it was more like a car than an "Element". Learned to love the CR-V, but it was a lease and after 30+ years of Honda Ownership (first car was a 86' CRX) I missed the box type truck style and have purchased a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and I have a whole new love for automobiles again, I do hope, one day, I have some extra scratch and can find an old Element somewhere to restore and bring back some wonderful memories.

@ ATITechnician - I was wondering if anyone else had problems with their suspensions. Mine was purchased from the original owner, though it had/has a creaking rear noise going over the slightest bumps. The dealership quoted me over a thousand to replace ball joints and other parts. I wasn't ignorant of the problems when it was purchased, because otherwise it's a great vehicle. "Otherwise", because they could have done a better job on the suspension...the rubber down there seems mediocre at best. As as buddy told me: "Just drive it", i.e. don't put down major money to fix the noises until I have to. It's no biggie, yet.

I loved this car. I bad a new 2005 AWD Element, engine gave out in 2014 . But to this day there’s nothing like this on market. My element was a Swiss Army knife , with SO much room .seats folded flat or up, .. I could go on. Just got a 2019 Colorado Zr2, but if Honda ever made a new element, I’d buy one on a heartbeat

I own an 04. It has 166,000 miles and is still solid as a rock. I love it, it's the most versatile vehicle that I have ever had. I hate Honda for having killed it and not replaced it with a similar vehicle. That sun shade just needs the screws tightened, that's all.

Well, that's an 04 and it doesn't look like it was taken care of very well. They made them until 2011 so you can probably get your hands on one that's in very good shape. They made them in AWD also. That moon roof in the back is so that when you go camping and lay all the seats down to make a bed you can watch the stars. You can also pull the rear seats to the sides and you have a huge cargo area in the back. You can put in several road bikes standing up with wheels and all and I have transported even two twin mattresses at a time. When I bought it it was very cheap, $16K. Great for the outdoors. I'm keeping mine for at least 4 more years.

I keep my eye out for these b/c I see them used with at least 250 - 300K with 1-2 owners. It seems to be the type of vehicle someone gets, keeps and drives for a good long time. I found a 2004 (and its 2018 now) with under 150K and I believe the asking price is about 5K. I've not driven one yet - but it does remind me a little of the Scion xB and also a little like the Nissan cube. I like that Honda went a little out of the box with this car bc their styling can be a little snoozy. Looking forward to your review.

the Cube is basically an aquarium on wheels, you could practically fit one inside of the Element. the XB, while it may resemble the Element, does not offer the interior space, accessibility, and configuration options, etc. if you can get an Element under 150k for 5k - do it.

Man, all this hate! Do must have done something right. This is still a great review. Watched it before getting one and it keeps coming up in my feed. Noise is very common with these vehicles. Later models are a little better but these will never be very quiet. Front suspension needs to be maintained more than American cars for sure. Later years had a little more power as well. Maintenance is key. If you find a well maintained one you will probably never find it for under 6k. I bought an 07 with 107k miles for 6k but is has some small issues. But I'm happy, this thing will never depreciate. Thanks again for the video.

actually you can take that sun roof out. You can find videos on how to do it on KZbin. Originally they even came with a cargo bag that would strapped to the back of the cargo floor to store the sunroof when you had it removed completely. That black piece of plastic in the sunroof is just a spring-loaded air deflector that comes up when you remove the sunroof.

2005 EX automatic FWD w/410k miles 2005 LX 5spd man FWD w/130k miles I’m an Element fanboy, as you might imagine. All the great things are known, so won’t repeat them. What I want to say is that they are WORTH the money it takes to maintain them when they get old. Underpowered? Do your homework, all Honda’s do best at high revs. Though I own two, mine is the manual, better half drives the automatic. I like both, but the 5spd is my fav. I’ve never hosed either out. Don’t do that. Just a small mop and 303. The 5spd tows our T@B 3000lb travel trailer, and yes, even in the mountains. Crazy, right? Don’t do this unless you understand towing and what it takes to do it safely. Properly equipped, the Element CAN handle it and what a great vehicle to have on the camping trips with the T@B!

Andrew, My commuter is a 5-speed Civic. I can leave my heel on the floor and operate the clutch through its whole travel. Nice. Good control. The Element’s clutch is larger, travels further, doesn’t get “easier” to push under the friction zone like the Civic. I still keep my heel on the floor until it grabs but have to lift my foot up to finish a shift. Kinda like my old Chevy C10 3-on-the-tree back in the day! All that said, it’s simple and responsive and easy to get used to.

Does regular use make a difference? Would bleeding out the hydraulics or new cylinders resolve the problem?

@Andrew McDonnald I do not use my whole leg to operate the clutch. My Element takes slightly more pressure to operate it over the Civic (which is small). It has more travel than the Civic’s clutch petal so I have to lift my heel off the floor a bit after it bites to get my foot off it completely. Like I said, it reminds me of how American car’s clutch action was in a bygone era. Not a typical Japanese car where everything is much smaller and lighter. I don’t know why the ones you tried were so hard to push. My knowledge of the mechanics is not good enough to determine why the ones you tried were difficult to push. Maybe yours and my perception are different. I’ve driven manual transmission cars my entire long life so I’ve pushed a lot of clutches, and my Element is well in the “normal” range. If you’ve only driven rice boxes with small clutch petals I could see where you might perceive the Element’s pedal harder to push. Does that help?

I have a 2004 Honda element that noise you hear the thumbing noise. When I test drove mine it did the same thing I figured out what it was on the test drive. I opened the compartment where.the spare tire is and the tire wasn't tighten down it has a screw down on it. I screwed it all the way down and tightened it down and it never made that noise again. I paid $4500 for mine 3 1/2 years ago it had 135,000 miles on it has 195,000 on it now. Mine will get up and go it's pretty fast for a 4 cyc. I did had to put a new exhaust on it after 3 years but its been a great little car I still drive it everyday. my back seats lay down and fold up to the roof then you have the whole back of it for space its got a lot of room in it. I love my Honda element it is just me and my wife and our dog. Its great for us of you want a good car get one you will love it.

You lose a lot of the comfort with 5 seats. It's so spacious because that is what it's made for. A small third row in the back defeats the purpose of all this space. This is the perfect vehicle for road trips with the boys. Also perfect for weekend trips to maine where you want to camp out in the back of the car.

The moon roof is removable and comes with a storage bag. The hatch over the spare tire is removable and becomes a table when you attach the legs for it. This is the only other Element that has that same roof rack as mine.

I think the least one can expect is correct facts about a vehicle. He keeps saying the Element came out in 2001, incorrect. Production began in December, 2002 making 2003 model the first model year which I still have. It is an awesome vehicle with 230,000 miles and going strong.

I think the reason it's underpowered is because it only has a 4 cyl. engine. The engine isn't BIG enough to handle the weight of the vehicle. I had a Jeep CJ years ago that had only a 4 cyl. and in no time I needed a new head gasket! The engine has to work too hard to handle the weight. As for the sun roof that has no way to close it, I wouldn't like that feature. I'm sure the car gets super HOT in the summer and probably anyone riding in the back seat gets serious head/shoulder burn! They should have at least installed a sliding shade cover for it.

That's actually a moonroof. The difference isn't whether they slide, it's what they're made of. Sunroofs are opaque and must be removed to allow light to enter the car, moonroofs are glass and can let in light even when closed. But that's minor pedantry. These days they can really be used interchangeably since sunroofs really aren't made anymore, it's all moonroofs these days.

You missed the whole potential of the car. All 4 seats fold down to make a bed and the back windows are for the view when camping. You can take the rear seats out and end up with a truck bed. The element has plenty of power. It’s not supposed to be quick accelerator but instead is powered for off road.

Yeah, pretty sure it's the power that made it obsolete. It's definitely not because it only seats 4 and not 5. That's pretty much not an issue for anyone. That's like saying that if a car seats 5 people, then it's useless because what if a family has 6? It's a big car, it's got a lot of room, so it's meant to either haul 4 people or with the seats up, it's suppose to carry some cargo. Either way, with several hundred pounds more, that's way too little power.

Scotty has a different take on the element a lot I agree with. Working on motor or peripherals? Honda wants you to go to the dealer and trade your kids in. Man are the dealer service writers corrupt. I used to sell cars. The service writers and parts department get a percentage of the repair. Try changing the oil without a lift. They buried the filter. They put it above the catalytic converter and had service advisory’s about oil dripping on converters and causing fires. They did not want you getting to that filter so you had to drive in for an oil change. Now they got you. Well Mr. Smith while changing your oil the mechanic noticed this 💵💵💰💰💰 or you’re due for this maintenance 💵💵💵💰💰💰. Still love mine anyway and help of Element Owners Club.
