After experiencing several hard shifts and downshifts, I decided to change to solenoids in the automatic transmission to see if I can remedy the problem. The transmission has worked very well until now, and I did not feel it was a mechanical problem.

Just thought I'd drop you a note I did the solenoid swap and it was well worth it . Smooth as butter shifts , it actually down shifts now if you shift it down a gear or two it drops right now. Never did before. I did have some problems getting N93 out had to pull the main wire connector back and getting that inside bolt was a nightmare but I got it. I did disconnect the 2 bolts on the front of the dog bone, then used a ratchet strap to pull the engine back and hold it. Super simple. And for those that might do this DON'T bother removing the whole dog Bone , It's not needed. Good Luck It's not that hard. Just Don't cheep out with no name solenoids got mine at Cobra Transmission.

Happy to hear it helped. Yes, loosening the dog bone on one side and moving the engine, the couple inches helps a lot.

Everyone watching this, I appreciate the kind words and wish you all the best luck. Before you jump in thought do some visual checks and if you have a VCDS or a snap-on to check a few things do. I recommend a spill and fill. You can only get about 3.4 liters out each time so 2-3 in a few miles of each other I recommend. Make sure you MAF is working, if unsure, unplug you MAF and see if things get better. Check the vacuum lines going down to turbo. Mine were a bit worn where they clip into air intake tube going to turbo and would collapse slightly under vacuum. I just replaced a 3-4 inch section and was good. Unplug your connector at the tranny and make sure no corrosion and put it back. I hear may be fragile so be careful, mine was not. Bit of a pain to get aligned back up. Do a TCM reset, two methods in comments, one with VCDS and one without.

Similar symptoms, losing pressure when shifting into 2/3 and 3/4. Will peg out the RPM. If I nurse it with little gas it will shift sometimes but other times wants to run through the gear instead of shifting. I kind of feel like it is the cause (the solenoids) and that by attempting this it'll fix the issue. Thank you for the great video. The additional info at the back was gold.

@@Lyndonkb11 Long story short, I took it to a repair shop asking that they check the solenoid. Explained it has an all electronic transmission and it could be the likely reason. They call me a day later telling me that the transmission needs to be replaced because there was metal floating in the transmission fluid. I asked them how they got to that conclusion he explained "they have a way to make it shift" and whether they had checked the solenoid and they stated they had not checked the solenoid. At the point I was livid and without transportation and not exactly well funded to drop a brand new tranny in plus the b/s they were trying to pull but they told me I had until the end of the day to get the car. The company went out of business shortly thereafter and is now a AAA. This is why it's best to have friends who know this kind of stuff, I just really hate the options and I lack the tools, expertise and space.

Hi John - many thanks again - ordered parts from Cobra - took some time to gain access moving wires and lines - but after 8 hours of cautious work with diagrams, sharpie (to mark old ones) successfully installed replacement solenoids, new gasket, new fluid, and road test this morning appears to be working when cold. Because of snow I was limited in my travels but hopefully this did the trick. Just want to say how kind you are to have put this video up and taking the time to explain the process. Hopefully all of the 18 10MM bolts and one nut is tight, had this vision I forgot to tighten one once sealed LOL. Best, Robb )

Great video. Did mine today and noticed a little "S" flange that bolts on with the black wire on the N91 solenoid. It kind of tucks back behind the N281 solenoid. I didn't see it before I removed it. My question is do you remember what position it was in? It will bolt on in a 12:00 or 1:00 position. I put it at 1:00 as it seemed to "sit" better there. I don't really know what it's purpose is.

At 2:45 I stated that I removed the dog bone motor mount to gain some room. I have done this to a few cars now. Do not remove dogbone motor mount- no need. I remove the radiator fan and the power steering hose, if you work it around carefully. You can push the whole line under the transmission giving you plenty of room to do this repair.

Hi, great video and really helpful! - I'm about to change the solenoids here in the UK on a 2000 Ford Galaxy tdi (7 seater MPV) with the same Jatco JE506e auto box as your Jetta. Looking at my Galaxy the job looks pretty much the same as in your video. Someone said below about re-setting the TCM?? Is that the auto box control unit and how would I do that? Is it not sufficient to simply let the car re-learn the gearbox / driver style after reconnecting the battery? I want to do the job at home without paying a garage but I don't have electronic testing or TCM re-setting equipment. Can anyone advise?? Many thanks!

Yes usually the selenoids go bad one of them is the 92 before that empty the transmission fluid and refilled again try without force the car to run the car used the Valvoline fluid transmission 20 dollars Walmart if you feel that you force the transmission at the begining before all of this maybe you need another transmission.

So I guess the next steps are the solenoids while trans is in the car as your video shows. Did that fix your problem completely? Thanks, Robb

+Thedetailer _631 Before just changing solenoids check a few things and check for codes. Check the harness going into transmission, easy to get to, I opened the twist connector and sprayed with contact cleaner. Make sure no MAF code. Check vacuum tube going to turbo, use vacuum gauge, it should hold vacuum. Then, if you haven't, change your fluid and see if these things fix your problem. If not, the valves are easy to change and I just did one at a time. I do not know the number, but the larger one in the center requires the one above it to be removed first. Remember where the little ground wires go, I believe there were two of them that need to go behind a bolt head. Good luck.

In my case they fixed the problem. I still drive the car today in Southern Ca. and it drives well. It now has over 360K on the original motor and tranny. Will this fix all problems, no. In looking at a few other cars, make sure your car is running well, no MAF problems. I tested one car that the MAF caused horrible hard shifts. Try resetting your trans and see if it adapts and has smoother shifts. If you have a leak, ensure the fluid level is correct. A pain to do on this tranny. I use the what I take out I put back in method for the fluid.

Great video? I have one problem with my 03 Jetta Wolfsburg with the 09A. Coming from a stoplight or after I turn a corner, when I hit the gas, sometimes the car will jump forward and increase accelerate faster than normal for a brief second. Also when cold it slips in 4th and 5th gear. Is this a solenoid problem?

Go to VCDS website for transmission reset. I believe some forums have said go to data 00 and reset. VCDS will show nothing but is suppose to reset. Without VCDS try: 1. Put your key in the ignition and turn ignition to the on position (the position right before you start the car) 2. Hold down the gas pedal pressing the button under the pedal for at least 20 seconds. 3. Let foot off pedal and start car. Be sure that you do no turn ignition off because that will void the reset

Sound like you may gave a few issues. Make sure engine is running properly before assuming transmission bad. Maintenance is important and if you have not, drain transmission fluid; only get about 3 1/2 liters on a drain and refill same amount of on level ground with VCDS fill till comes out the overfill plug. Then drive awhile and do again. I would same like 3x to get most of the old fluid out. The VW fluid is expensive, I used the Valvoline and still working well. I have found the MAF can affect shifting. If you have VCDS, there are tests to check the sensor.

There is no accessible filter in the 09A transmission unless you remove and split the case. You are pretty much with spill and fill. If you do consecutive with few miles driving between, you will refresh the fluid. I believe Cobra Transmission from Florida is who I purchased the solenoids from. I once bought much cheaper ones on Ebay, recommend not to do this mistake. They did not last very long. Remove small screw new driver wheel well on power steering and put hose under trans, will give you a lot of room to do this repair without putting car into service position.

I would just use an ohm meter. The last ones I tested were shorted to ground. If you go so far as to open the cover to get to the solenoids, MHO, replace all the solenoids. I replaced one solenoid for someone awhile back and have to go back inside. Getting sort to ground again on No.5 solenoid. May try to film.

There were two connectors above the transmission pan you removed. One is for the transmission, I believe to determine the gear selector. Glow plug I do not know, however older VW the insulation liked to crack on the wires you move. The glow plug wires are in the big harness (like 11i4 " diameter) running alongside the transmission.

Gearbox oil (ATF) temperature sender G93 It is located inside the gearbox housing. It continuously monitors the temperature of the ATF oil and sends a temperature signal to the gearbox control unit. I have read people buy a new sensor and wire it into the harness near the solenoids. Unless you plan to open the trans case?

2005 vw golf with this same transmission, does not upshift 3,4,5 unless you let up on the gas pedal. Trans has 188k miles and oil has never been changed, just did first drain and fill, and oil was brown, is there a chance this could be solenoid issues?
@adequatedust
@adequatedust Жыл бұрын
I think there is. I would drive around a few miles and drain and fill again. If I remember, only a little over 3 liters per drain and fill. I remember the first time I did mine, it was following a shift that hit like a hammer as I was speeding up to go through a traffic light. It took three drains and fills for mine to smooth out. The main reason I went with the Valvoline ATF. The VW at 18-20 dollars a liter would have been horribly expensive.

Your testing of the solenoids is a little flawed. The most common problem solenoids fail is because the transmission fluid is old and contaminated. Solenoids often get stuck because the shafts on the solenoids are gummed up (varnished). The solenoid electrical components are probably fine. But the resistance increases because of the varnished shafts. You need to measure if the readings are in or out of specification. Most of the solenoids can in fact be cleaned if the right tools are ordered to take them apart and put them back together. Hope you used factory VW / Audi solenoids. Many of the kits out there on E-Bay are made in China and are of poor quality. You may find yourself right back to where you started in a few months. VW Tiptronic and DSG transmissions are great when they work AND maintained properly. Changing the fluid every 35-40,000 miles is strongly advised. If you do lots of stop and go city driving that barely gets the engine warmed up (short trips), you may want to replace it every year regardless of miles. The other extreme is also true. If you're driving 60,000+ miles a year, it means you should be replacing it every 50,000 to avoid solenoid problems. The oil simply gets worn out and thus it gums up the solenoids. On some Tiptronics the transmission fluid filter is inside the main housing and unless you are going to overhaul your transmission.... so clutch band material and carbon can build up and freeze the solenoids if the fluid is not replaced at the recommended intervals. You are right about the wiring harness. It can get VERY brittle with the amount of heat it gets soaked with. Use VW transmission fluid and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches. You dove right in, so that's a great job in itself!

+Doug Hanchard Thanks for commenting, and yes I should have been more diligent changing fluid before. Unfortunately it took 4 changed to get it looking good as one can only remove approx. 3 quarts at a time. As far as specs. It is very difficult to get accurate information on vw and the on line boards contradict one another greatly.
@DougHanchard
@DougHanchard 8 жыл бұрын
+John Fountaine You can in fact change all the fluid with the correct tools and software, like your VCDS, to ensure all the old fluid is flushed out, depending on the model year. I think the first year of the DSG in Jettas and Audi's with the TDI or 2.0L gas engine were the most difficult to get all the fluid flushed. (95%)

I do not know what solenoid you need. There are several articles where you can use your symptoms, ie: where your shift problems occur, and use the guide to narrow it down to a solenoid or two. I bought a solenoid kit for the transmission and changed them all. I agree with a previous poster and make sure you check the fluid level, color and possible change it. Also make sure your MAF sensor is working properly as this will greatly affect your shifting. Do a TCM reset which procedure can be found online without a scan-tool. I had to do this a couple times and shifts got smooth and have been since this video.

Not sure what valve 10 would be. I have included some recommended Ohm readings you should get measuring resistance at the TCM. Ohms checks are not conclusive unless they check bad. Solenoids can fail underuse, going open, or shorting. when hot. If you are going to remove the cover and replace one solenoid, yes, I would recommend changing them all. In the USA, the cost is about $300 to $350 for a set of all solenoids. I would avoid the cheap ones from eBay.

I believe you are referencing the Neutral Safety Switch? Make sure car on level ground and parking brake applied and wheels blocked. Once this is removed the car can roll. I marked mine before removal to aid with replacing. If not aligned correctly, the car may not start because the ECU/TCM is not sure what gear it is in. Actually can't tell it is in park or neutral. If you did not align correctly fo back and try to align with the dirt/rust around the holes. There is a small amount of play so should only take a few tries to get it right.

I have been successful with this technique: 1. turn key on engine off. 2. depress accelerator pedal to floor and hold for minimum count of 10. 3. turn key off. 4. lift foot off of accelerator pedal. 5. start engine and drive.
