2004 Lexus GX470 ABS Brake Booster Pump Replacement

This system has a maintenance item that is often overlooked. The nitrogen accumulator will lose its charge overtime and cause the pump to run too long/often. It should only switch on every 2 to 5 normal stops. Panic or ABS stops are different and will eun the pump continuously. To check: turn the ignition on but don't start the engine. (This system doesn't need the engine running to operate, as long as your battery is in good shape.) Let the system pressurize and the pump turn off. Depress the pedal like you would during normal braking and count how many presses you get before the pump has to turn on. It also should not run more than 10 seconds to replenish the pressure. The accumulator is a whole lot cheaper than the entire hydraulic assembly and doesn't require removing the hydraulic assembly or any bleeding.

Did all that when determining my next steps. The accumulator was half the cost of the new OEM unit. For my money and time ... and piece of mind, I chose to replace it all rather than piece by piece in the event other things were failing. Although I had no codes from my OBD2 reader, this was simply a piece of mind replacement knowing there would be issues given age.

@@AZRubicon1 half the cost?? I've been buying the accumulators for 150 bucks. I've only had to replace the entire assembly once for a guy due to a leaking main valve and it was 1200 dollars. Both are dealer prices BTW. There must be a significant difference in our geographical locations as far as the pricing goes. I'm in Georgia.

@@topher8634 I'm only here to help those who may want it if they make the same choice as I have. Not to bicker or get picked apart thread by thread. OEM Part#47950-30010 here in AZ and in GA (chathamparkwaytoyota.com in Savannah) are very comparable. Everyone is free to make their own choices. This was mine, yours was yours. It's all good.

@@AZRubicon1 wasn't bickering bud, was just surprised at the difference in price from state to state. I was only trying to help with suggestions against replacement of the entire assembly. A lot of folks are not familiar with the accumulator failure and are often duped into an entire replacement. I'm well trained with that system and repair a lot of them. That's why I was sharing my knowledge with you. I own a mobile repair service, I personally do not have a vehicle with that system. I did own one back in high school on an old Pontiac but not since then. Ford, Lincoln, Buick, land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes they all have different variations of that system they call Marks (Mark 1 through I believe 6) it's a German made system. I wasn't picking at you on your choice at all. When a great deal comes along, by all means, jump on it.

@@AZRubicon1 out of curiosity, I just called the Toyota dealer that I use here in N Georgia. They list the entire assy at $2400, my cost is $1700, the pump/motor and accumulator assy is $1200, my cost is a little over a grand (this is what I have to replace for people 99% of the time), and the accumulator list almost $700, my cost around $350. It's gone up a little since the last time I had to purchase one, probably COVID inflation. I get a discount which I extend to my customers as I don't have all the overhead a conventional shop does.

Just replaced mine but now everytime I touch brakes the pump is cycling and I get rapid clicks felt in pedal

Did you bleed the brakes? There is no shame in taking it to a good shop to check the brakes!

@AZRubicon1 bled twice yes, I've replaced the units before without issue on other 4runners.Mines just giving me grief, pretty sure I got a faulty unit

@AZRubicon1 this is my second unit both are reman units. First one had codes had to send it back, this second one no codes or loud constant beep. Just weak brake performance and everytime I touch pedal pump activates and get pulsating noise along with it.

Great video, thanks for doing it. I have an 03 4Runner and the break pedal appears to stick slightly after I release the brakes. It’s getting very annoying. I had the dearer look at it, but the say it’s ok and to keep running it. They did quote me 3K to replace the brake assembly if need be. I was under the impression that you need a diagnostic tool reader to bleed this kind of system. Is that not the case?

I did not use a diagnostic tool. I do have a Blue Driver OBD2 port scanner that I use on all my Toy's. It's never thrown a code. The gent who commented below makes a good point. Have a read before you replace the entier unit. In my case I did. Good luck!

The control module is the actual ECU (electronic control unit) it's the computer that controls the hydraulic unit (what this gentleman replaced) it lives under the dash near the PCM or the Air bag ECU. Modern vehicles have upwards of 20 different modules or ECUs to control everything from engine control to transmission control to the Air conditioning and power windows.

Goto the online parts store for mcgeorge toyota. Their online parts store has the cheapest price out of half a dozen dealers I looked at. Free shipping if you call them and ask how, and I didn’t get charged tax either, where other places would have. It’s the same part as the 04 4runner V8

Did you have any ABS lights pop up after install? Saw another video that involved using some sort of TechStream software to reset all warning lights…curious if that was your experience?

Nothing at all. It's really straight forward. Just pull it out, put new one in, add brake fluid, bleed, drive, bleed again and then again if you want to be sure after 6 months. I use the OBD2 BlueDriver tool to scan every so often. Everything is fine. Just my experience.

You do not fill these systems with them pressurized. If you do you will overfill them. To check the level, pump the brakes 25-40 times with the ignition off. Then fill to the max line. The reason why is when the system is pressurized, the pump moves fluid and stores it in the accumulator. If the vehicle sits overnight, its normal for some of that pressure to bleed off and return the fluid to the reservoir. This is usually indicated by the ABS and Brake warning lights remaining on for up to 20 seconds after starting. If you fill to max with it pressurized and it sits a couple of days, the fluid will run out of the reservoir and get all over everything. Brake fluid is very corrosive and an excellent pain remover. If you want to see what im explaining, have someone pump the brakes with the ignition off and watch the fluid level rise.

Sure, but I had the opportunity to get a new pump so I did. You still need to pull it all out to replace parts and there is still a risk there given the truck is as old as it is. Just my choice.

I'm confused, now, isn't the booster the pump? Mine isn't pumping at all, so the brake pedal is hard and the reservoir is full. I'd rather just replace the pump, since that's a lot of money to put into my 04 with close to 300k miles.
