To clear up some confusion: The Maybach 57 and 62 structural frame is actually much the same as the W140 but elongated and of course with different panels (I think it even carried over its costly certification), the W220 is narrower. In terms of electronics, it is based on the W220 technology but almost all parts are actually different. They really touched every nook and cranny and polished it for the Maybach. So the Maybach is its own thing in every sense but of course was developed from existing technology. The W221 carried over design elements from the Maybach but is again, completely different.

What he meant is that due to the age of the vehicle you are unable to turn this feature off and it is on all the time. This is an electronic malfunction due to the age of the vehicle. Normally..the driver chooses when it comes on or off..not the vehicle. And not everybody likes this feature nor finds it pleasant. This is why he stated you will be repairing many things in a vehicle this age. My new MB S Class has this feature and massage function..but I choose when to use it..not my car.

So, back in the 90s and before the chrysler merger was even a thought, Mercedes higher end vehi would compete with the likes of Rolls-Royce and bentley! The w140 was a billion dollar project car for Mercedes in the 80s (1.6 billion in todays money) with some insane features for its time. It had double pained glass, every single mirror on the car is electric even the rear view mirror, heated seats and adjustable seats in the front and rear. Ultimately it was amazing craftsmanship in the interior, comfy (even a self leveling suspension), but powerf with either the over 300hp in either the v8 or the v12 (which was also crazy for the 90s), and in my opinion far superior to any of its competitors at the time. The w140 came out in 1991 and ended in 1999, after 200 they moved to the w220, the 20 signifying it is less than the 40, and their 40 range chassis was left for the maybach. Lexus' marketing and the chrysler merger made sure that mercedes moved its competitive bar to compete with its modern competition such as bmw, lexus, jaguar, and audi rather than the rolls and bentley levels of competition. The w220 (the s class that came out after the w140 in 2000) is a downgrade over the previous generation.. they reserved their best chassis and ideas for the maybach and spiritually continued the w140 through the w240 which is more of a rightful continuation.

I’m certainly in the minority here, but I hate the hype the W140 gets sometimes. 80% of the people who simp for the W140 have never driven or owned one, and after driving one back to back with my ‘220 S600 there’s no way I’d consider the 140. People love to talk about some impossible to define solidity the W140 has, but in terms of measurable statistics the 220 pretty much walks all over it. I always tell people who want a W140 to just save themselves the inevitable headache and get a nice LS430. Coincidentally enough, that’s also what I tell most people who want a 220, because unless you’re really dead set on the specific things the 220 has to offer (ABC and a V12 primarily) the LS is just a much better car.…even getting beyond the similarly plastic filled interiors, the W140 can be such a maintenance nightmare because it exists in that window where cars were no longer analog, but weren’t quite up to modern tech yet. The practical impact of this is that trying to diagnose problems through the cars computer systems is just a nightmare, and that’s not even getting into parts availability.
@rahulmandala49303 жыл бұрын
@@jakebarnes9018 Which is why the W221 set the bar for luxury again. It even got arguably way better with the W222, although that’s got a bit more tech and so forth. Funnily enough, I have come across some W222s with past 100,000 miles, so they might not be as bad up until a point where all the issues may start to snowball onto the owner. Nonetheless, I consider the W222 to be the finest of modern S Classes imho. The W220 no doubt remains marred by the Daimler-Chrysler merger, which is a shame, because I thought it looked decent. However she is a nightmare to own. Though I do respect the W220 for pushing the envelope in technology. If we’re talking old school bliss, the W126 still remains my favorite and even more of the classics going back to the 30’s til 70’s~ish for a reason.
@jakebarnes90183 жыл бұрын
@@rahulmandala4930 I’m partial to the W220 as I’ve had mine for the better part of a decade now, but I’ll admit it’d be very hard to pass up on a late run ‘221 S65. It’s a shame none of the stereo options in that car really do the rest of it justice.
@rahulmandala49303 жыл бұрын
@@jakebarnes9018 Yeah, The 221 is indeed timeless, after a lot of years. I want to like W220 for its modest style at the beginning, but I had woken up when I saw how they were to own, which was sad because MB knows they can shoot and aim for much higher and latch on to that standard they had set before in the case of the W220. Well in all honesty the people that would buy such a car back in the day wouldn't care if it did 1 mpg, maybe only because they would be wasting time sitting at a gas station shouting at their driver. But yes those Maybach models are some kind of gems in the automotive industry and they are kind of a special breed as MB kinda halfassed it to make it just a little better than their S-class but with a 2x pricetag which I think where most people fail to understand what exactly they are paying for which is very true if you compare it to a fully spec'ed S-class.

I wouldn't say the fuel economy is that bad. There are cars that have little power but burn tons of fuel because their little motor has to work really hard to get things moving. The first gen BMW X5 3.0 and W211 Mercedes Benz E350 4 MATIC come to mind. Their smaller motors powering heavy vehicles and all 4 wheels make for terrible fuel economy.
