2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart - One Take

The Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart was a project to "sportify" the base Lancer with a few suspension and chassis bits, and some lightweight O.Z. Wheels. We never thought much of it when new, but now, these things are so cheap that it's time we have another look. Would a Ralliart make a fun cheap car? We think so.

Interesting how this is considered a slow car when there's just the EVO above it, and multiple smaller engines below (1.5, 1.6, 1.8) and even diesels. :)

What do you mean by evo above it? This isn't anything like a wrx/sti kind of deal. The Evo is in a completely different class than the lancer and can not be compared. "when there's just the evo above it" you must be kidding. I have a 500hp evo and a 900hp evo, Me, along with most evo owners don't even consider lancers to be even related to us lol. At least the wrx is still awd...

Te Ralliart here is/was advertised exactly like WRX would be compared to a STI. I work at an ex Mitsubishi dealership so.. yeah.. 90% of lancers sold were 1.5 with just over 100hp. You being a snob is not what I was commenting on. :)

I actually owned one of these for a few years from new. Thunder Grey metallic. My assessment is, it’s an underrated driver’s car. Very good steering/chassis feedback, precise shifter, great brakes, limited slip differential, the ride is harsh over rough pavement, but the seats are extremely comfortable. Second only to my BMW M-Seats for comfort believe it or not. Also came with a great sounding 1,200 watt factory stereo w/subwoofer. The bad? Well, it should’ve had at least 200HP, the interior (apart from the seats) was cheap looking, the paint was thin, brittle and chipped mercilessly. The first year the front-end looked like it had been sand blasted. The actual driving experience was excellent though. If it had a few more ponies under the hood I think it would’ve been remembered as one of the greats.

I had a friend in high school who had one of these in high school (2013), it was a really cool car. The little wheels and low profile tires and boxy sedan was a unique look at the time. I had a stock 2007 Mazda 3 sedan, and I had another friend with a 8th gen civic sedan. When you’re young, you take what you can get and appreciate what you have!

I had this Engine 2.4 Mivec in my mirage 2 doors. With high Pistons, 2.5 Exhaust,intake,headers and Ecu Tuning 198HP. Very great engine.

Looks like a lot of fun. It takes me back to when I had an '03 base model Lancer. They really can be fun. Mine had Tein coilovers (what was then known as Basic), Progress rear sway bar, intake, cat back. Sold it about 5 years ago when they were still worth $5k to the right buyer. That was a fun car to drive. The only thing it lacked was a manual transmission. My wife still misses the GReddy exhaust sound.

You can make anything with wheels fun if you try hard enough. They are exactly what they are, decent but cheap commuter cars - not good, not bad, just cheap, boring reliable transportation (actually being Bitsamissing, not even very reliable for a Japanese car).

My Lancer was bone stock so you weren't going to blow the doors off of anything but it was still fun to drive even if it was basically just a 1.5L commuter.

Jue_boy Absolutely - my wife has a 2003 Toyota Voltz, generally a boring as fuck small family hatchback - but it grips amazingly well, so I've had some great fun driving it on winding coast roads ringing it out :-) Reliable as anything we've ever owned too.

Dude, I had one of these! I bought it off the original owner who completely built it. It was his first car. I owned it for 3 months and then it blew up… hydro locked the engine. But dude that was the most fun car I’ve owned! Built bottom end, equal length headers, complete exhaust. Still wasn’t the fastest but sure was the loudest! Haha miss that car

I bought this car new when they came out. Surprisingly a great car. The only negative when bought stock was they put snow/mud tires on it significantly dropping the numbers. I think they didn’t want them to close to an Evo. Fun little car.

Cool kid. And for daily whip the Lancer Ralliart is a cool choice too. I've always heard that the insurance is astronomical compared to some of it's competitors (like the Civic SI) because of the "Lancer Evo" connection. But maybe that's bunk. Besides that seems like a great value for $3-4k. :)
