Common issue on most vehicles, the blower motor goes out and/or the motor resistor. This is my take on doing the Volvo XC90 motor and resistor. Hope it helps some folks out there!
Parts ordered from FCPGroton.com:
Blower Motor - Part Number: Behr 9171479
Blower Motor Resistor - Part Number: Behr 8693262

Thanks for posting this. Just coming into summer here in Australia and my motor died and I cannot face another monthly mechanics bill for my XC90 😅 Two builds though; 1. I had to pull at the panel holding the footwell light so much i found it better to remove the light and replace after. 2. Refitting the unit was a real pain, just couldn’t get it to seat by hand. Until I decided to start tightening up the fasteners and then noticed it suddenly pulled itself into alignment.

I just replaced my blower motor and resistor in my 2006 Volvo XC90. The original managed to make it 13 years and 138K miles before I had issues. You absolutely have to break that 5th tab because the screw is not accessible as others have mentioned in the comments and as mentioned in the video. Breaking the tab is the hardest part! The only other recommendations I would make to anyone doing this is to definitely replaced the resistor as you will only want to remove the blower motor once given the extensive nature of this job and as a safeguard to your climate control module. Also, I would suggest replacing the cabin air filter at the same time. I know the cabin air filter is a periodic maintenance item so it should be changed on a regular basis, but you do not want leaves and debris in your new blower motor. At minimum, I recommend checking the cabin air filter to ensure it is clear of debris. I found this video extremely helpful!!!

I replaced the blower motor, resistor and cabin filter in my wife's 2010 XC90 last night based on your video. I was quoted $1,400. I paid $185 for the parts from FCP Euro and spent about 3.5 hours, going slow so I didn't mess anything up. The fan is running normally again. Thanks very much for the HUGE assist on this! Two thumbs up!

Omg!!! You are a lifesaver! I have a 2008 Volvo XC90 3.2 AWD. According to Vida 2014D, the dashboard has to come out. And to remove the dashboard is a nightmare! My blower motor gets very noisy when I crank the AC. I ordered the blower motor, resistor and another housing/shroud just in case I mess up or the grommets are bad. The motor, resistor and cabin filter will be coming from FCP Euro and the housing is from Courtesy Volvo Parts. All will be expressed shipping so I hope I get them all on time before I head to Vegas with the triple digit temps. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO !!!

I just pulled the blower out of our 2012 XC90 using this video as a guide. I had to get medieval with the blower motor to break that back tab off. I ended up breaking about 4" of the recessed ring that goes all around the blower motor off as well. Some crazy glue took care of fixing that. I will be putting the new motor and resistor back on in the morning. I found that a flexible extension and a mirror are really helpful in seeing where the torx screws are and removing them. Didn't need to get on back under the dash which is good because I am not exactly petite.

Awesome video! Shop was going to charge 8 hours labor for this repair. I did the repair in 2 hours. Replace both the blower and resistor at the same time. To break the tab, I took a long skinny flat tip screw driver, and heated the tip with a torch. I used the heat to melt through the tab. It took a few seconds to cut through the tab this way.

Thank you for posting this video. I just finished mine and this really helped. In my case, the tab broke very easily once I twisted the blower a few times (after removing the other 4 screws). The rubber insulation is what makes re-installing it a pita. I recommend removing it too after the blower is out. It would make it easier to line up the blower to screw back in. A long Flexible Bit & Socket Driver Set really helped me re-install the screws. I got the blower and resistor from FCP for $170. You can find it cheaper at other places but the lifetime warranty is a no brainer just for a little more money. The whole thing took me about 2 hours.

Took me a little less than an hour to install. The tip I would add is to clip off the bolt hole tab on the new motor housing prior to install. (The bolt hole tab that had to be snapped off during removing).

Thanks, saved me a couple of hundred bucks. My fan started go full speed and I could not turn it off even when removing key from ignition. In the end it drained the battery. I bought a cheap resistor for 30 bucks on amazon. My tip is to clean up the 5 screw once the housing is removed, I did it with a sawsaw. Then I recommend to remove the glovebox as it made the reinstall a lot easier.

This video saved me video saved me over $1,000. Took me about 3.5 hours viewing some sections over a few times to be careful. On re-install of the new blower to make it flush I had to remove the 4th screw plastic siding piece(s) that was still stuck in their broken off location, but once I did that it slid in flush fairly easy. I used my iphone forward facing camera holding face up and a small flashlight under the blower motor to view and better find the screws. Good job @thetexascoder No special tools, just that t-25 screwdriver and a flashlight gets it done.

So many times when I watch these videos, the mechanic is in such a tight place all you can see is a close up of the bolt (especially a job like this) so all you really learn is which way to turn the bolt, but you actually did good moving back a bit for a better example. Only suggestion I have is your common complaint of "working with 1 hand" and the best way to fix that, is find a set of Google glasses.

I change motor yesterday just like you did. There is still that old resistance cause I haven’t that. Hope it works still many years. If it won’t, easier to do this again cause now the fifht screw tab is broked and have experience of this job. Old motor kept squeeky noise in a cold weather. That was the reason to my fixing operation. Thanks for this great video!

This video was very helpful; thanks! 2008 Volvo XC90. As others said it was not easy to get that 5th screw on the blower housing to snap. Eventually got it; had to really pull hard. Also, putting it back together I ended up having to cut out some of the rubber/foam in order to the the blower back in. There was no way it was going to connect at the seal for me without doing this.Then slid the rubber foam in behind it afterwards. Everything is good now

Really useful video, got a new motor/fan etc. for £30 from ebay. Was fairly easy getting the old one out, a bit of brute force actually just snapped the tab you can't reach. Getting it back in is the really tricky part, the sound proofing kept pushing up a bit, but eventually wiggled it in to position. I found it easier to do after taking the cover off it, the one that the hose attaches to.

Great video! I just swapped out my resistor and blower motor as well in my 2009 XC90. Couple things I will add: you don’t need to remove the glove box although it may have made things easier for me if I had but I didn’t know how so I didn’t mess with it. I also had to lay upside down on the back of my passenger seat and stick my head under the motor to screw and unscrew the screws. Lastly, I would recommend an extended on your socket wrench. Made things way easier.

Couple things to mention. One. Had to remove some of the thick rubber at the edge where you break the clip to get it back in. Maybe just me but was very difficult to reinstall. Second. If you think you only have a resistor issue (normally meaning the fan speed is erratic or stays at high), then just remove the one screw holding on the plastic cover. Unplug the two prong fan. And connect new part. That way both know your issue, or can just rig it together until you have time to r&r. Also, jumper the red and black wires to fan and that will let you know if the fan is bad. If everything just quit, is likely the fan

Great video thanks. I was able to actually do an easier fix if its just a squeal or slowing down. Follow same instructions up to the removal of the fan housing from the dash. From the glove box position you can get to the squirl cage and the motor shaft. You have to open the recirc door so it is taking air from out side, this allows you to get to the fan top. Now using a light spray oil, spray some lube on the top of the shaft, it will run down the shaft towards the bushing. You might need to hit it a couple times, i did it once with the fan spinning. That's the top bushing done. To get to the bottom bushing drill a small hole the size of a WD-40 tube, 1/16" or so, right in the middle of the bottom housing, so that it is right below the motors bottom bushing. Push the tube inside so it touch's the bottom of the motor where the bushing is and spray the oil. I did this with the fan on so I could hear oil penetrating into the bearing, the motor will stop squealing and speed up....when this happens you've got some lube in it. Now I put a small short machine screw in the hole to seal it, which can be removed if you need to lube it again. Doing this saved me $1270.00 from the local shop. I bought this 2006 XC90 used with 126k on it and the fans always been iffy. With 186k in it now, the fan was really starting squeal and hesitate...then this morning with -2 F temp she just stopped. Did this fix in about 1.5hrs. It smells like oil but I can deal with that..and its never blown this hard ever! Cheers!

Question. I’m thinking about buying a 07 xc90 and the it’s leaking coolant where the bottom hose goes into the expansion tank. I know that’s an easy fix but the guy said the heat isn’t working right only blowing out of one vent just barley. He said he took it to a garage and they told him it was the heater control valve. I’m wondering if that would be right and was looking for installation vids and came across your video. Has me wondering if it’s the same issue as you had. Any advice would be great. I’m looking for a reliable 3rd row vehicle as my family is growing and I’m a bit nervous but really love the car. Plus it only has 114000 miles.

Ok, I have a problem. The wife took the XC90 to the store and when she got homeshe said the blower motor was running and wouldn't shut off. At first I expected it to just be the feature that causes the blower motor to run to get rid of moisture in the evaporator. But this is different. turning the blower knob does not affect the blower speed. I tested it this morning after the install and the knob was controlling the blow speed as expected. Has anyone experienced this? Did I just get a faulty resistor from Amazon? I did disconnect the battery for this install.

@WildIronInc
@WildIronInc 2 жыл бұрын
I assume you're done with this job considering it's 10 months after your comment. But in case others are wondering the same thing. When you take out the four t25s it wants to hang down. You just start wiggling it down further and put some force into it rotationally and it breaks off rather easily. The fan can be a bit of a pain to pull down It has to be lined up on the screw holes rather well while you pull directly down.

Thanks for uploading the video, it allowed a general tech to do this otherwise $$$$ job. I bought a new motor, then saw resistor usually is not included and usually a fault so I bought it from a different company. It fit great however I will note neither blower or resistor included the resistor mount screws. You must save the old blower and remove and reuse the old resistor mount screws - - use care and you do not need to disassemble the old motor, you can reach the 2 screws by finding a gap by spinning the fan a little or breaking a fin off the old unit. New unit attacking resistor to blower is easy. I just about bugged out. Getting the unit out was okay I removed all but 1 screw and broke that tab by torquing it out. However unless I messed up something putting it back in was a %@#!!%)@# @##$&@()!%?:' and more, maybe because I am too tall and cannot work in small compartments. However I resolved to fit 1 screw in front facing.. back left mount. The others were just a hair off but the unit wouldn't twist to fit or be flush. After an hour trying to fit I just said the fan is not scrapping anything, I through on the fan cover, that mount could not go flush to mount asi I duct taped/wrapped tape around frame points to hold it plus seal any large air gaps from not mounting flush. The floor dash will hold it pretty well too. It works very well when all put back together especially when saving $1500 on the job. Parts for blower was a cheap version $45, resistor unit was $25. The old blower fins were fine there was pin needles, yarn looking things and black foam in it but I think it was just old age that explained it going intermittent. Clean out the dash vent area you insert into. Mine had berber like carpet strands coming out of the insulation and sagging into the motor and wrapped around a motor mount. I tucked it away into the dash again but it was loosely kept there, and I was afraid to cut it. Anyway thanks for poster that gave me the assurance to at least understand this job to attempt performing it myself. This poster just gave us knowledge for us to write a check for $1500 to ourselves and not a mechanic. Thanks man

You mention having to break one of the tabs because you couldn't reach it. At the end of the video you said to make sure you have all four screws back in. How were you able to put the fourth screw back in when you couldn't get to it during removal

Maybe you already found out, but he mentioned that he forgot one screw, so in total there are 5.

So of all things I am having trouble with ... I can't get the ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR out of the old blower motor. I spent 30 min using all my force, and the clip won't come out. It budges slightly. I am afraid to use a wrench and snap the clipping off. Any suggestions here? It's killing me!

Had the same issue, I used a pair of channel locks in one hand and a small screwdriver in the other to push the tab in while pulling down on the connector and it finally released.

Okay so I was recommended by Volvo to get this replaced and they wanted $3000 parts and labor. But my a/c is fine it works hot and cold but it just doesn’t turn off. I turn the dial to off and it stays running like at medium to low power until the battery dies. Should I replace it still?

If the blower motor runs quietly and smoothly,it is most likely ok.The most likely reason it continues to run is the blower motor resister is failing.But know this fun fact.Volvo has a feature called "after blow"This will make the blower motor run when everything is off and even when the key is removed.It does this to dry out the evap box and ducts to prevent mold and mildew.However,the afterblow should not start up until the vehicle has been turned off for about a minimum of 20minutes.My advice is replace both the blower and resister.Volvo has had many issues with this problem because of water intrusion around the blower intake under the cowling.There is a good fix for this issue and it's here on youtube.IMO,buy your parts from www.fcpeuro.Everything they sell has a lifetime warranty and that includes wear parts.

There is no really place to lubricate once those bushing bearings get rusted and seize. The problem bearing is under the fan blades piece, hidden and not accessible. Plus, lubricating it if succeeded, will be only a short term 'fix'. Need to replace the whole blower unit.

I too had the same issue of not being able to slide the new one in. If you brake the tab off of the old one like I did (used brute force by pulling down on the whole housing and it finally snapped off), you’ll need to make sure you remove the broken tab and screw that’s holding it in. Like others, I still had to remove a little of the grey insulation near the tab brake to ease the new one in. I used a straightedge razor and shaving the high area down and it finally fit into place.
