Reflow the two small blue resistors next to the 8 pin chip.

Hi Jeff I have another one that’s kickin me good . This is 2.5vdc feed to the micro for turn on . 2.5vdc with inductor removed is good . There’s a bunch of filter caps around the processor reading shorted to ground . Caps removed and still reading short to ground . Have you ever seen this ? Possibly micro shorted?Thanks

Love the videos brother. I have a 2004 monte carlo have some issues with my cluster. My battery light comes on with the abs,brake and airbag light. Check my charging system everything is in tip top performance. Everything else in my car works fine. I was told my gauge cluster is going out. It had 260,000 miles on it would live to talk to you

Nice job. Question: It appears you connect an RCA connector (two wires) to supply data to the cluster. Is the data source something of your own design? Would clusters from different manufacturers all accept the same data? Thanks

Yes it's homemade. Since OBD2 is a standard, it will work with many clusters from around 1996 to around 2007. So I use the same signal for trailblazer, impala and others from around the same generation.

Hi Jeff I had this same board arrive today. It’s a strange issue . None of the right side gauges work . So it’s missing the class 2 data somewhere. I replaced the 8 pin ic I believe it’s (56585 part number) and then 28 pin stepper motor chip . No luck . Trans temp not working. Speedo , Tach , and displays work fine. Have you ever seen this issue ? Hope all is well.

Follow the signal path from the connector to the little blue inductor to the right of the plug down to the 56585. I assume you see 12v at the 56585?

Jeff your the man . It was missing /broke off the board that blue inductor next to the connector. I do a lot of 04-09 Toyota Prius combination meters. If you ever need my help please let me know. Thanks -Mark

Hate chasing a problem on something someone butchered after it last worked. How much would a new lens have cost? Seems a shame to return the broken one.

Replacement lens typically runs around $30-40 for a Chevy version.

The floating volage would be the caps and other inductors charging and discharging without a full circuit Jeff.

The regulators are linear, no inductors in that circuit.

Stupid question ...Because i done a stupid thing 2005 Chevy Blazer cluster I removed the factory cluster lights for LED blue lights They do work And around the same time i replaced by stock radio with a aftermarket I been having a parastic draw of 0.50 on RDO/Batt 19 The Heat/AC is manual The dash does not have that square security message And the two large screens side by side equal size RPM/Speed .........Can this cause a draw when parked and off?

@@jeffescortlx No both times (radio in and out ) i tested with a meter on 10amp And set to mili And i waited 20 mins for the truck to settle down power wise I would get 0.50 to 0.52 Pull the fuse And 0.08 to 0.10 My head is spinning with the ideas of maybe a relay Or HVAC. I have not blown any fuses "yet" I even tried with another radio same stuff ..Maybe some how i crossed wires with the pin connectors GM to Radio harness ..I might be down to licking power and grounds Thanks for the quick reply!

Well for surface mount 3528 work for most. My 3mm and 5mm don't go by part number, I order direct from the manufacturer by description.

@@jeffescortlx Have you ever considered making "repair kits" that contain all the motors and LED's to repair clusters? Lot of people out there that are handy doing these repairs but have no real source for bulbs or 12v LEDs aside from what little Amazon or similar sells.

@@ChucksBasix the market is already flooded with repair kits. Competition is tight, not much meat on the bones after PayPal fees, website fees (eBay or Amazon fees), shipping cost (free shipping isn't free) income tax and state sales tax.

Are these cluster issues primarily associated with GM, or is GM more your specialty? I don't hear of these issues with Dodge or Ford, but I'm also not in this line of work so I may not see the bigger picture.

Dodge and ford clusters do have issues, just not at the mass rate of the 03-06 GM's. This generation was the perfect storm of failing stepper motors, fracturing SMD solder joints and small back lighting non-serviceable bulbs that typically start to burn out by 100k miles.

Great repair, shame about that busted lens though. Those lenses are pretty tough, someone's obviously gone "full gorilla" on the poor thing.

Sounded like it was a mishap during removal from the dashboard. Probably the connector clip letting loose and cluster banging on the inside top of the dashboard.

They are not that tough at that point in the vehicles life. UV rays kill everything and make them super fragile. Broken lenses are really common on the 03/04 models. I have a wall full of broken lenses that regularly gets tossed in the dumpster. I always stock new lens assemblies since its so common for those lenses to break.

@@mike7958 the 03+ are pretty thin so that doesn't help. The Buick century/regal, now that's a tough lens.

@@jeffescortlx I don't think lens thickness plays a role here. I think Its the fact 03-06 models have so many problems that people beat on the dashes out of frustration. Especially on the 03/04 models with the intermittent power problem. Any time someone comes in with a broken lens I can almost guarantee its on an 03/04.

That regulator would have produced a low output because the feedback sample voltage was too high, the output would be lowered untill it compared with the reference voltage in the chip. Dam i did say that in a long winded way lol. Your loverly cat is so forgiving, or is it just daft in the head :-D

I didn't look closely, but maybe 1.2v is the minimum output setting?

Yes it's the internal reference voltage, typically 1.250V for a lot of variable regulators. The grounded resistor has 1.25V Ref across it, and the top resistor has (Output minus 1.25V Ref). Same idea as the good old Lm317 3 pin regulator :-D
