I replaced my motors with mixed success. All the ones that were working before are still working except for the gas gauge (it is now "dead"). The oil pressure (was broken) is now fixed. Tach (was broken) jumps to about 500 rpm and stays. Speedo doesn't sweep smoothly, it kind of ticks up and down almost "digitally" if that makes sense. Obviously soldering these is not an easy skill - so thumbs up to you with your amazing soldering skills. And congrats to being way over 1000 subs now. Unfortunately since you are a cat owner and I am deathly allergic to cats, I can't send mine to you for fixing so I'll have to see if I can fix it or live with it.

As a result, your channel will lose access to all monetization tools and features associated with the KZbin Partner Program on February 20, 2018 unless you surpass this threshold in the next 30 days. How deep is your knowledge on the GM clusters? I built a highly modified 2000 Impala and it has the cluster from a 2001 Monte Carlo SS. One of the things I would love to do is change the functionality of the PRNDL21 indicator so it will highlight the actual gear the transmission is using in real time instead of showing where the shift lever is physically positioned. I have an indicator at the shift handle that works fine and I know what position I put it in when I drive. It's redundant to show this info on the cluster and being a modified car, this would be one very cool mod to add to the list. Have you ever performed a mod like this before?
@jeffescortlx6 жыл бұрын
This would be more at ECU level programming. The cluster is simply only displaying what it's told through the serial data wire. I don't have the ability to do this mod. Also don't know how much lag you would see from when the ECU sends the signal until it's displayed on the cluster.

Great work! Yeah, makes so much more sense now, I saw where the pads were completely off up the traces. Using cheap resistors for donor jumper cables and then looked like transformer wire for the longer ones? I noticed on one of the longer ones they kind of overlapped, is that not going to be an issue? Or did you insulate off camera? And also I noticed you pretty much just circle the stepper motor wire, is it not important that the jumper and stepper wire touch, as long as there is solder between the two? I will use my alt accounts to give you a few more subs and not really sure where else I could send this, but I will brainstorm. Good luck! Its well deserved! Really niche, but great stuff!
@jeffescortlx6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the copper color wire is transformer wire. It has a thin enamel coating to insulate it so it will not short if touching a conductive component. The coating burns off with the soldering iron. Its nice stuff to work with.

@AZStarYT5 жыл бұрын
@Chris - to answer your second question, the wire loop and solder bridge to the terminal acts as both a pad (mechanical connection) and electrical connection. It's stronger than that tiny little pad the board houses plate onto the board, as long as it's not a cold solder joint. Good, simple field repair technique (and I used to teach mil-spec soldering in the aerospace industry) but I would wind the repair wire tight around the terminal, sortof like wire wrap. Then again, this is not going out into space . . . nor would it be allowed past most Q.C. It would just be replaced with a new board/module if one was available and this would wind up in a surplus sale.

The silver and copper color leads you use between pads and torn pads... is the silver wire solder or actual wire? Does the copper wire have a coating to keep it from shorting out other traces?

Very cool man. I no longer feel so alone for going the extra mile to repair things using some creativity and innovation. I don't know how you got so educated in the field, I have to give you much credit for your knowledge, especially if you had to learn on your own. I've worked with cars, rebuilt & restored, them along with computers over the years & one thing I know was not many wanted to share their knowledge. So when I came across you on here & you were one of the few who were willing to share their knowledge I listened & paid attention. Back to your question, the original cluster probably can be used but I'm always trying to learn something new & want to reprogram it myself, if I mess it up I still have the original. All the GM clusters I've seen are different than the Park Avenue, this one is just another challenge for me.

But I don't want to get involved with that. I just like to do board work and fix things, not break the law. Unfortunately I don't think your going to find much support or information on the park ave. It's just not a supported model. You could extract the bin file and look at it with a hex editor, but there wont be much information you'll be able to do much with. In the rare chances I come across a cluster like this that cant be fixed, I just swap the eerpoms.

What are you eating cat? Lolll gotta love a professional with animal help. Damn man you are fast nice video. Detailed well. Im having issue getting needles off. Feel like someone glued them down and all of my stepper Motors were replaced all my needles and gauges worked great it just lost complete power every so often like when I would hit the high beams or tilt my wheel the gate cluster would shut off and not come back on for at least a week or two but now it's completely Don no power to anything just the lights and I can't see anything that's broken our why would be doing this. Is there a relay or something in the ignition column that would control Power to be losing when I touch the high beams or tilt my wheel cuz I brought the cluster to other people and they've tested it and said that everything is fine everything works out they put power to it it turns right on so I am at a confused point right now

Hey Jeff I have an 04 H2 bd. It has no Odometer readout . Upon inspection I noticed a 66 ohm resistor on the secondary side of 10 pin transformer that drives the Odometer digital display is burnt up . On the primary side of transformer a small mosfet shorted out . Replaced them both. When 10 pin transform is in circuit , the small fet runs super hot and will burn up if kept on too long . Replaced the transformer and round 4 leg coil above it . Same thing . Any thoughts ? Ty sir -Mark
@jeffescortlx6 жыл бұрын
I believe that transformer runs both the high voltage (42v) for the VFD driver chip, and low voltage high current for the VFD hot wire. Try manually injecting 42 to the cap in the bottom left corner, see if the driver chip get hot.
@NuWavUSA6 жыл бұрын
I’ll try it .. thanks
@NuWavUSA6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff I haven’t had a chance to inject the 40vdc into that cap to see if it restores the display without running hot . I put it all back together. But if it does what would you think the fix would be ? Ty sir

It depends what component gets hot. That's your short.

I was just wondering I pulled out my cluster panel and resolder the computer chip because my gear select was real dim I fixed that now I can see it again but in the process when I removed the needles I didn't mark the positions and when putting back together I felt dumb because I am not sure how to collaborate the temperature gauge and the oil pressure gauge is there an easy way to do this
@jeffescortlx6 жыл бұрын
Not really a easy way without the ability to do it on the beach. You'll just have to pull and reseat the needles where you think it should be. Or send it out.

I had to stop doing partial repairs. I ran into too many problems. People would say "my cluster works great, just need this one little thing done", so I would quote accordingly. Than once I get my hands on it it turns out the stepper can't even pass a full sweep test. But the problem is 6 months down the road problems start showing up and it becomes my fault because I was the last person to touch it. So now when I'm in clusters I replace everything.

I know what you mean about KZbin. They got my channel like that and then came back and made it so I couldn't do live streams using my phone because I didn't have 1000 or more subscribers. They arent aware that if i really wanted to i could easily create over 1000 email addresses in my spare time and then use those to subscribe to my channel. Hello just wanted to thank you for all your excellent videos ! I just got a used 04 Tahoe & all gauges seem to work fine with one exception, the cluster reads “service brake booster” as the Tahoe has hydro boost brakes this doesn’t really apply. I’m sure somewhere in the vehicles life the cluster has been changed with the donor being a vacuum booster equipped vehicle. Can this be repaired/programmed properly? I also would like to see about it being gone thru & all checked out if possible. If you would please send me a message at higz@windstream.net Thank you !!
@jeffescortlx6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I'm not able to program the brake booster function. Yes it does sound like someone put the wrong cluster in your Tahoe. This would also mean your odometer reading would probably be incorrect to.
