Thanks for posting, I enjoy your videos that you put out. If i may help and give a little advice and save your back and less work. The next time that you do another cv axle, this is my tip. Remove tire, cv nut, sway bar link bolt, ball joint nut. Then just push the lower control arm down and pull hub assembly to you, cv pops out, then remove from tranny. It's a really fast way of doing it, and you don't have to deal with the brakes or strut alignment. 3 nuts and its out after the tire is off. Hope this helps for the next time.

Great video, great tips... Thank you. I also bought aftermarket axles and they appeared to be too short... Until I stretched the news ones out. The inner boot held them short... I was able to remove the old ones by "slide hammering" them out, they have enough play to do so. Once again, thank you for the effort you put in to make this video. And, yes... My vibration under acceleration is gone :)

Nice video. I usually torque the axle nut after the wheel is back on the ground. That way your working against the tire instead of the transmission.
@MrSubaru13873 жыл бұрын
That's not proper procedure from Subaru. The CV axle nut sets the preload on the wheel bearing. Vehicle weight on the wheel bearing, with the axle nut not properly torqued, can damage the bearing.

+Keith S. Anderson the transmission is the SVXs Achilles' hell. The SVX doesn't share a lot of crossover with other Subaru models. Parts are starting to get kind of few and far between. Windshields, throttle position sensors, and radiators are hard to come by. Still great cars, just have to be aware that you can't just run to the parts store or through dealership for a lot of items when you have car trouble.

The outer boot looks good but must have cracks that open when steering , throwing grease. Any tips to make sure the trans-axle seal is not damaged when removing the old or installing the old? Should you apply a thin film of grease to the stub shaft before installing into the transaxle? I replaced the knuckle, bearing hub, and balljoints 3 months ago, so it should all come apart easily. Im thinking take as much apart as possible is good to make sure the axle goes out and in straight and not cocked is best.

Another good video. My 08 went through 2 sets of axles under warranty. The boots failed. I think the boot is too close to the catalytic converter and the boots get too hot. The last set was replaced at 90K and they're still fine at 172K. Maybe Subaru changed to a stronger boot. Where do you place the jack stands? I jack the Outback by the lower control arm to body bolt. I like to avoid jack stands on the jack points on the sill, I find you can deform the sheet metal. Do you replace the transmission seal when you do the axles?
@MrSubaru13876 жыл бұрын
+joepinehill I've found that aftermarket axle boots don't hold up near as well as the oem ones. I jack the car front and rear under the rear differential and front crossmember. I place jackstands on the factory pitch weld at the marked jack locations. You usually only get deformation of the pinch welds if you don't have the jack stands positioned incorrectly or it the car is rusted. I usually only replace axle seals if they're leaking. Rarely do I see them fail. Usually when they do, it's from being damaged by axle removal/installation.

Usually cheaper and easier to replace the whole assembly. If you catch it early, say just a torn boot, you could replace the boot. If you have noise, lots of grease slung out of the joint, or dirt/contamination in the joint, I'd advise replacement.

Front axle. Manual transmission. Unless an axle seal is leaking, I rarely replace them.

I should have figured out it was front by how you jacked it. I took out my axle and compared it to the Cardone replacement (which I verified is the correct part, according to Cardone). The Cardone is too short. Or is it? It expands to match my old one. My old one can compress to match the new one. Should I return it?
@MrSubaru13876 жыл бұрын
They should be the same length when resting outside of the vehicle. If that axle is too short, return it. An axle that is too short can pull out of the front differential and cause damage.
@iceclimber20016 жыл бұрын
I’ll be returning them. I am going to put the old one back in. I’m pretty sure that the problem is the wheel bearing. Should I clean or lube the end going back into the differential? I was going to spray with brakleen.

Swapped my passenger front CV axle last night thanks to you. You're absolutely welcome. You should start a Patreon.

my sisters 2007 Impreza, she parks her car in back of her house and she drives up a slope sideways , approximately 60° angle on grass. She backs up. It’s only about 3 feet high to get up on the level from the street. Her passenger side front axle pulled out of the transmission.. I am sick of working on her car. I am retired, my wife and I both have new cars, my sister cannot afford a pot to piss in. I actually bought her the car.. no I have to go and work in 90° temperatures getting eaten alive by mosquitoes to pop that back in. I was hoping I would not have to remove the wheel/brakes/unbolt the axle. I was hoping I would find a video on KZbin to show me how to do that without doing all that extra work., I should have known. When I bought gas yesterday on the 13th day of the month, our bill was $13.13

Do you need to disconnect the ground cable from the battery to replace the CV axle?
@MrSubaru13876 жыл бұрын
+bedard simon no, but the service manual recommends also disconnecting the battery before performing any work on the vehicle. Do I? No.

Hello, I bought a remanufactured CV from Subaru, cheeper than the new OEl, why didn't you go that route?
