I just took my Kalos to a mechanic to change oil and filter, is it normal that after 12hours and 1km the oil is already dark?? I'm doubting they changed it..
@Shanes_Shed Жыл бұрын
If the mechanic has done a decent drain I wouldn't expect it to get dark that quickly, however it is possible for it to happen. This is just one reason why I do my own work where I can.

Thankyou Shano....what kms do you recommend a change of penrite oil. Do the mfg suggest a lower km rate so they can sell more oil..? A bloke in the usa did a change , one at 15,000 km and one at 45,000 km. Sent both samples off for a lab test only to find very little difference in the composition of elements which indicates the oil companies and mechanics are cleaning up here big time...whats your view on this?? Cheers Mate
@Shanes_Shed Жыл бұрын
Big question for the comments feed! Apologies this is going to be a looooonnnnggg reply. My recommendation is 10-15,000km intervals or yearly - whichever occurs first. Oils are subject to degradation from combustion byproduct contamination and low km short trips are generally quite severe on oil which is why I recommend the 1 yearly timeframe interval regardless of kms travelled. Engines are generally the harshest environment for oil and as a result they can be made up of up to 20% additives which is generally much more than any other type of oil. I serviced a friends car that hadn't had an oil change for around 60,000km - I can tell you now that while the main wear elemental analysis of the oil looked ok at first glance the oil itself was cooked. Highly oxidized, viscosity had increased nearly to a SAE50 (from what would have started out as a 5W30), massive fuel dilution which normally reduces viscosity - but the oil was so oxidized that the end result was increased viscosity (it is a direct injection petrol engine which do tend to suffer higher fuel dilution). And the total base number was depleted (meaning the oil is starting to become acidic), overall the oil was in very poor condition. So what I'm saying is there is much more to the lab tests than just a wear material elemental analysis. I would not recommend pushing oil significantly past a recommended interval without lab testing the oil, but you need to know how to interpret the results. Bear in mind no vehicle manufacturer blends their own oil (at least not as far as I'm aware), all they do is commission the majors to make it for them and they label it as their own, so the oil manufacturers don't really have any say into the intervals they just supply oil to meet a determined specification. Manufacturers will be setting intervals that are long enough to meet environmental and customer expectations, but not so long that they are going to cause warranty issues down the track. Ultimately it will be a balancing act to get it right, but generally speaking the recommended intervals will be fairly safe. Previously most manufacturers where around the 10,000km mark for service intervals, but now with new cars the intervals are being stretched out to 20- 25,000km intervals being the norm (most still recommend a yearly service regardless of kms however). Not only are the service intervals being stretched out but lower viscosity oils are also being used - 0W16 and even 0W8 are starting to be common. This is happening due to fuel efficiency and environmental pressure. Lower viscosity oils do make a significant difference on fuel economy standardized testing. But these lower viscosity oils need a robust additive pack to do the wear protection work as they can't rely on the the viscosity of the base oil like an SAE30 or 40 oil can. Hope that helps out

@@Shanes_Shed . Great response Shano.....about 10,000 kms over the mark now so 25,000kms sounds more reasonable with a good oil such as penrite. I guess paying more means getting a longer life out of the oil than other manufacturers. Cheers Shano

How do you know if a mechanic has put in the wrong oil in your car? Have found one was going to do this, but I had read the manual and pulled him up in time, and the other actually did then claimed it didn't matter but I know it does damage, albeit slowly. I think because I'm a female with a young voice they think I'm stupid.

Without doing a used oil sample your not really going to know what oil is in there, but that will only really give an idea of viscosity and basic additive pack. You won’t be able to tell what brand and spec it is precisely. Unless it’s been filled with modern ultra low viscosity oil like a 0w20 or lower then I wouldn’t loose any sleep over it
